Scattered Shots: ViperNotify and aspect swapping

Scattered Shots is your weekly guide to improving your Hunter skills, brought to you by Jessica "Lassirra" Klein of The Hunter's Mark, covering a variety of Huntery topics. Today, we'll be talking about how to effectively swap between aspects to improve your performance.
Pike from Aspect of the Hare published a post recently, "Aspect of the Viper and You", in which she describes what Aspect of the Viper is and when to use it. For raiding and leveling Hunters alike, Aspect of the Viper is a powerful tool to reduce downtime when mana is running low. Stopping to drink or popping mana potions is almost obsolete thanks to this great aspect, and Pike's article goes a long way in teaching newbies and veterans alike when it's time to put that aspect to use. Today, I'd like to take that idea further and discuss more ways to help put Aspect of the Viper to work for you.
For raiding Hunters, it's extremely easy to switch to Aspect of the Viper during a fight to regen mana and then forget to swap back to Aspect of the Dragonhawk once your mana bar is full again. I know in the past I've had less than stellar numbers on the meters simply because I forgot to switch aspects! Sure, swapping aspects should be a no-brainer, but simple mistakes are easy to make when you're dodging slimes, fire and big ol' dragons. For that reason, I started using ViperNotify. This add-on is very simple and light weight. All it does is notify you via pretty blue alert text that appears on your screen (similar to a raid alert) that your mana bar is full but Aspect of the Viper is still active. It also plays a quick little ding sound (which is, amazingly, not the slightest bit annoying) to catch your attention in case you missed the warning text. There are, of course, several other mods that behave similarly, but ViperNotify is the one I use. This one simple add-on makes it much easier to ensure the best possible performance from your two primary aspects.
In addition to this add-on, I also use an aspect swapping macro to help manage my two primary aspects while conserving action bar space for other important abilities. Here's the macro I use:
#showtooltip
/castsequence !Aspect of the Dragonhawk, !Aspect of the Viper
All this macro does is swap to one or the other of the two aspects depending on which aspect you currently have active, and displays the icon of the aspect it will switch to when you hit the macro. For Hunters of lower levels that don't have Aspect of the Dragonhawk yet, you can simply substitute in Aspect of the Hawk in its plce. (For PvP Hunters that don't have Aspect of the Dragonhawk yet, this same macro can easily be used to swap between Aspect of the Hawk and Aspect of the Monkey.)
Now that we've streamlined the process of switching between aspects, let's talk about when to do the switching. Simply waiting until your mana bar is all but empty is certainly one way to go about it, and it does work, but with a little planning you can maximize the effectiveness of the switch to help your performance. One thing I would suggest is swapping to Viper when your major cooldowns are almost up so you can be sure you'll have plenty of mana available to use them again as soon as they're up; this maximizes your burst damage and ensures that you won't run out of mana while you've still got buffs cooking.
Another great time to swap into Viper is when there's a lull in a fight's action. The air phase of the Malygos fight, during lava waves on Sartharion, during the safety dance on Heigan, or during polarity shifts on Thaddius are all great examples. Any time you're moving or unable to fire shots is a great time to swap into Viper. With the exception of Patchwerk, standing still for long stretches is a luxury we can seldom afford so there are always plenty of opportunities to make fight mechanics work in your favor. Using damage downtime effectively is an important habit to get into and will make aspect swapping that much more efficient.
Managing your mana regen effectively with Aspect of the Viper will mean more overall damage output and will eliminate the need for costly mana potions. Don't forget, the four-piece Tier 7 bonus can also help your damage output during regen mode if you're still struggling. The four-piece bonus increases your ranged attack speed by 20% while Aspect of the Viper is active, giving you more damage and potentially faster regen depending on your spec and shot rotation. There are always little tips and tricks that will help increase your performance, and effectively utilizing aspect swapping is just one more way you can get the most out of your character.

Useful information.
Now if only I could remember to play my poor underused hunter alt, you should write about that next time =P
Evi Mar 13th 2009 1:37PM
Ah, yes. Doesn't everyone have a poor, underused hunter alt? Mine has been sitting in Orgrimmar for way longer than I'd care to admit. ;)

Did I miss Scattered Shots detailed coverage of the massive changes to the Survival tree and how it will impact those that choose to stay SV?

When and where was this posted? Recently?

I completely agree that a way to easily be reminded that I've got Viper up is a necessity; my guild likes to rush through things so I'm often chasing after an overzealous tank or being distracted myself (mmm, dinner) and forget that it's on until I wonder why my damage sucks.
I like Power Auras, which BRK suggested on his blog a while ago. I've got an aura set to warn me about all the stupid huntardy things I'm prone to, including when I'm getting close to running out of mana, when I've got Viper on, and, after a horribly embarrassing Aspect of the Pack incident (to be fair, one of my guildies pulled the boss while we were running back from a wipe, so I was a bit distracted) a little floating paw above my head so that I know Cheetah or Pack are on. I also want to keep Serpent Sting up constantly, so there's one that warns me when it's off.
It's even easy to set up. I kept thinking it ought to be more complicated than it was for me to create my own aura, but, lo and behold, the new auras just worked.
If, like me, you aren't one of those people who can keep track of 20 things at once, power auras is a great resource.
If you just need the reminder about Viper, go with Jessica's suggestion.

Good info, I'd been skipping Viper because I was put off by the 50% damage reduction, I guess I'll give it a try now.
Gnosh Mar 13th 2009 9:01AM
Being OOM is a 90% damage reduction.
Gemini Mar 17th 2009 6:22AM
Please don't tell me you've been raiding and not using AotV when needed.
l2p the easiest class in the game, omg.

Ok, I actually think adding a macro to take you to aspect of the dragonhawk before the various DOT shots would be helpful to ensure that you were in DH as you hit your first draining shot onto a MOB. No?

Good article. I think I'll have to check that one out. I'm constantly forgetting to turn Viper off. I USUALLY notice it before the end of the fight, but not until my DPS has taken a large hit and I've wasted my Rapid Fire + Loatheb's Shadow trinket + Readiness + Rapid Fire combo cooldowns. >.> Yeah... That increased attack speed and increased attack power does me whole lot of good with the damage reduction of viper... *facepalm*
Kaiva Mar 12th 2009 8:07PM
That viper addon sounds pretty good, though it has one downside:
On occasion I have accidentally left viper on and found myself in a pvp situation with an enemy player. Upon winning the fight as I stand above his corpse, I feel proud to say I could own someone with Viper on... Its kind of like Lance armstrong winning a race with training wheels on ; )
Wild Dwarf Mar 12th 2009 7:29PM
Thank you Scattered Shots for the wonderful article. I think my Forgetting to Switch problems are over.
Euripides Mar 12th 2009 7:30PM
Use powerauras to put a big honkin blue aura around you when you're in viper. This was detailed in BRK's setup from a few weeks ago.
The Elitist Jerk Mar 12th 2009 7:54PM
Sad addon is sad. I still don't understand how can people NOT notice they're doing 50% damage.
Retardation?
Puc Mar 12th 2009 9:55PM
Tired meme is tired.
And to answer the question, because we're not all recount gazine dps whores, we're doing the best for the raid, moving, keeping alive and trying our best to do decent damage - so not flicking back from AotV is a farily easy overlook...
Balius Mar 13th 2009 4:13AM
Really? As an assassination rogue I'm juggling an energy bar, important longish cooldowns, several touchy short duration buffs and debuffs, watching my own debuff menu so I can save my skin with CoS, and running all over the place in a raid to avoid nasty AoEs and react to the tanks moving the bosses around. As an Affliction warlock I'm monitoring as many DoTs as I have fingers while trying to squeeze in as much extra damage as possible between refreshing them. And I read this topic and its replies, finding out that hunter players can't be bothered to notice they're cutting their own DPS by half for no reason without alarms sounding?
Clearly I must be playing the wrong classes if this is what Hunters are concerned with...
Doof Mar 13th 2009 6:16AM
you're my hero...
wait, no, that's the hoff.
dean.speedway Mar 13th 2009 8:12AM
Gee Balius, I'm amazed. You are able to do all that stuff and still find the time to be a waste of oxygen forum troll.
What add-on do you use to help you manage that?
Lyraat Mar 13th 2009 8:58AM
A rogue QQ'ing over how hard he has to work during fights? A lock QQ'ing over handling dots? Sad troll is sad.
Balius Mar 13th 2009 9:24AM
I'm not crying over my classes, I'm annoyed at people who are so bad at playing they can't handle something as simple as swapping out aspects as necessary. Half the comments here are about how necessary this addon is, and how the players are always forgetting about using it, and the other half aren't saying otherwise. This isn't a complex shot rotation being flubbed or a less than optimized talent spec or not evaluating two competing pieces of gear accurately. This is people more than halving their dps because they can't be bothered to change aspects without something screaming at them.
