Two Bosses Enter: Mal'Ganis vs. Varos Cloudstrider

After The Puppy chewed up The Squeak Toy in last week's Two Bosses matchup, we move to a theoretically interesting pairing: Mal'Ganis from The Culling of Stratholme vs. Varos Cloudstrider of The Oculus. Readers will want to consider not only the fighting styles of the two combatants but the considerable power and lore behind Mal'Ganis as a character. Don't cop out or be too l33t to bother – let's see what you've got in some juicy comments!
The usual rules apply: assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools and damage output, and that they are fighting in neutral territory. While Arthas normally assists against Mal'Ganis in the Culling fight, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that he should be here to butt in. Let's scoot Arthas out of the picture. However, we think the fact that Varos Cloudstrider summons Azure Ring Captains as an integral part of his battle plan serves as a decent counter to the sheer strength of Mal'Ganis' background. Let's work with it; no Arthas, but we'll allow for the summoned Captains. (And no, all you smarty-pants out there: Varos doesn't have to kill Mal'Ganis outright, simply wear him down to the point where he escapes.)
Remember, focus your debate on the three S's: Style, Story and Scale. Don't get caught up in game mechanics and what players might do in each encounter. Consider the flavor each villainous gladiator brings to bear, then cast your vote for who you think would come out on top.
Mal'GanisMal'Ganis isn't merely the last boss in The Culling of Stratholme – he's one of the nathrezim sent by Archimonde to head up the plot to turn Prince Arthas to darkness and make him the Lich King's greatest champion. You'll want to read up on his background as well as his basic abilities before coming to any conclusions about this battle. And remember – Arthas isn't around for this matchup.

Varos CloudstriderVaros Cloudstrider, Azure-Lord of the Blue Dragonflight, is the second boss inside The Oculus. Varos summons Azure Ring Captains when he fights, which we'll allow during this matchup.

The smackdown
Remember: no group-tactic or game-mechanic nitpicking. Vote for the spirit of the battle as set forth above. Set aside differences in opponents' health pools, game level and actual damage output, and size up these villains based on their fighting style.
It's not just who wins -- it's why. What's your reasoning behind who ends up victorious? Post your comments. Let's come up with what goes down!

They're both pushovers, but I'd say Mal'ganis would win, cause no matter how many times he's killed, he always comes back >.>

*cough*spoiler*cough*.
if you're referring to that, i do think it's ridiculous
bundee Mar 12th 2009 6:58PM
You realize you just made it a bigger spoiler if it wasn't one already, right?
pwkalt1 Mar 12th 2009 7:40PM
I don't know what YOU guys were talking about, but *I* was referring to how he comes back if you kill him in the WC3 mission.
Perhaps you may have spoiled something by saying that I was spoiling something, you ever think of that, huh?

Spoiler Alert...
Mal'ganis can not be defeated because.... he is the Grimace!
He's big, purple, can't be killed and always comes back. He always loses but can't be beaten. You can't kill the Grimace...

"Stratholme was merely a setback!"

I don't think this is too fair, seeing as Mal'Ganis will probably be an Icecrown Raid Boss we don't actually know all his abilities but I think all Mal'Ganis's cc and heals from melee swings will make him win.
Spoondy Mar 13th 2009 6:30AM
Sadly, I think it's no contest. Malganis would sleep the drake, move out of that lightning thingy and just pwn this guy's face.
seanfury Mar 12th 2009 6:38PM
Mal'ganis. While a pushover for an organized group of "heroes", I'm not so sure Varos would have such an easy time with him, especially when he can be put to sleep and have his adds dispatched fairly quickly.
TJ Mar 12th 2009 6:46PM
Mal'Ganis, simply because Cloudstrider is one of those humanoid dragons that twirls their weapon like an idiot when they run.
Spicyness Mar 12th 2009 7:00PM
Agree
Lionhearte Mar 12th 2009 6:48PM
Mal'Ganis would, assuming Varos would cast Amplify Magic, Mal'Ganis' Vampiric Touch would heal him back up more than the damage he would be taking. Besides, he can always just run away and tell everyone he won.
Sygerrik Mar 12th 2009 6:49PM
Mal'ganis. Since Varos only has one or two Captains up at a time (Can it be two? It's been a while since I've been to Oculus), Mal'ganis's Sleep pretty much nullifies that advantage. And he's certainly smart and agile enough (look at them wings) to dodge the purple energize core beams.
Dominika Mar 12th 2009 6:50PM
If Amplify Magic will boost the healing from Vampiric Touch, Mal'ganis has this so hard it's not even funny.
Zeplar Mar 12th 2009 6:50PM
Totally off-topic...
There is a creepy banner ad "Think you're too busy to back to school?" here and it wiggles when I put my cursor over it.

Based completely off abilities it seems that Mal'Ganis would tear Varos apart. Mal'Ganis has the cc to control Varos' adds and even aoe them and he has a sufficient healing effect that would keep himself up. It's a no brainer.
Yo Mop Mar 16th 2009 10:27AM
Not even a contest.
Mal'Ganis wins becuase Varos Cloudstrider is seriously out of practice at beating on people. Seriously, when was the last time _anyone_ ran Oculus? Compared to the number of people who go on CoS Drake runs?
Please.

Gee, epic lore character VS random guy who gets pwned because he's with Malygos...
Such a tough decision.
Tridus Mar 13th 2009 5:36AM
Epic lore character who gets defeated and retreats over, and over, and over, vs a randomboss who doesn't?
I agree, tough call. Try them in game some time. Mal'Ganas is a joke.
