Around Azeroth: Only the lonely can play
Flamingcrow of <Kamikaze Penguins> on Uther sent in this screenshot for anyone who has ever been wait-listed for a raid. Waiting by the instance entrance, staring at a dragon's behind, earning half-DKP while they hear everyone else get the first kills and the loot and all the glory on Vent ... it's a depressing experience. But without them, who would take that DPS slot when the rogue disconnects again? Here's to you, Mr. Sitting Outside The Portal Man! (Edited to add: KP gives full DKP for sitting. Apparently my old guild were the only ones who did half-DKP. Curse you!)
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, double-mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran.Filed under: Screenshots, Around Azeroth, Galleries

I've always felt that the person sitting motionless outside the raid should be earning twice the points of the people who actually got to play.
Nice pic.

People do half DKP for sideliners? That sucks lol. We offer our raid members full dkp so long as they are able to raid if called upon and not just afk gathering points.
Snakeman Mar 13th 2009 11:11AM
Every guild I've ever been in - and there have been a few over the years - has given standby players exactly the same DKP as those inside the raid.
I have known people in guilds that did give some amount less - with the argument that the players inside "are taking the risk and doing the work". Pretty stupid argument, IMO.

Do people actually just wait outside of the portal when they are on standby? I certainly don't, I'll go off and do dailies or whatever, if the raid wants me in due to dropout/dc then they can summon me.
bundee Mar 13th 2009 11:20AM
Yep. If I have to wait to go into a raid, its for 25 man. They'll have a warlock.
Keyra Mar 13th 2009 11:18AM
You DO realize that I'm going to have to hurt you now, Liz? Why? Because now I have The Motels stuck in my brain and I just KNOW it's going to be there all day while I'm here at work!
Oh well, it could be worse...it COULD have been New Kids or something.
Happy Friday the 13th...again! :-)

I am that guy that waits, I am the filler, I am the difference between 24man Naxx or a full raid... fear me... oh, wait... my DPS sucks and my guildies just feel sorry for me... THÈ Gúild of Mannoroth is the greatest ever...
Norcallights Mar 13th 2009 11:41AM
Wait... seriously? Waiting outside the instance earning 1/2 DKP? Now I'm really glad I'm not in a "serious" raiding guild!
What's so bad about being online and ready to summon at a moments notice, but off in another zone doing dailies?
Braundo Mar 13th 2009 12:11PM
Probably just fine to do that nowadays...before you could summon directly into instances, though, it wasn't always feasible to ask the raid to run outside in order to summon you.
Whenever it used to be required of me (in previous guilds), I would just sign out my main in front of the portal and log on an alt or something.

Hi, I'm an officer of Kamikaze Penguins. We give full DKP to those who sit. We'd appreciate it if the article was corrected :P
Flamingcrow Mar 13th 2009 1:47PM
I can vouch for that, I luvs my peeps in KP, as I still luvs my peeps in GCC, which is the guild I was in when this screen cap was taken. GCC didn't even use DKP... not entirely sure where the whole half DKP thing came from...
And neither KP or GCC FORCES people to sit out of raids, this was an instance of me showing up for a raid w/ gcc, and they were full. No slander to either my current or former guild intended, just thought it was a cool pic.

In my guild, people on standby are expected to be at the instance portal at the start of the raid. If you aren't needed, you're free to go do whatever you want. And we let people know as quickly as possible if they're not needed. You just need to be "available" if you want to earn points for being on standby that night. Go do dailies, whatever. We'll summon you. We don't expect people to sit outside the portal all night long. Yeesh. That's crazy!
Flamingcrow Mar 13th 2009 2:58PM
I agree, that would be crazy, this particular night, I believe, I sat down outside, went and made a sandwich, and then watched some tv, away from the pc. Once again, neither GCC nor KP make you wait outside the instance all night, that, too, would be odd. I just waited there because I wasnt at my computer.

Another officer in another raiding guild who also gives full EP/DKP to our raiders who show up on time, but are asked to sit out because the raid is full. :P And my heart goes out to you sitting-out peeps, I was once one of you, as an aspiring prot paladin in BC, and now I'm member of the tanking team in Dawn of Maelstrom(as opposed to 'main tank', we don't have one; you could call me -A- main tank, but not -THE- main tank). Keep at it, your dedication will be noted!

Sideline DKP = inflation.
We're a Near-Zero-Sum guild, and you don't get DKP if you're not in for the kill.
When I get waitlisted, I either do my dailies and wait for a summon, or park my raid-ready toon at the FP and get on an in-guild alt. They'll say something if I'm needed, and I swap over. It's only about 30sec to swap over, and I'm not going crazy w/ boredom just sitting there.
If I want a better chance, yeah, i hang out in vent, and when someone says "I have to go in 30min", I say "I can fill it!". If I'm appropriate, the RL concurs, and I swap over about 3-5min before needed.
