Um, well, I have made a ton of money on alchemy. A ton. I'm not sure what it cost to level my alchemy to the top was since I've had the skill for 3+ years, but as I've leveled it with the expansions, the pots I've made to level the skill sold very well (at least covering the mats that it cost to make the pots). In BC I made so much money it was unbelievable, especially with transmute-specced alchemy, making meta gems. Now, in LK, I'm elixir-specced and make flasks regularly. I proc enough that I make 100g/day or so from it, and that's just spending 5 minutes in the AH buying the mats and reselling the flasks on the spot. In BC I made enough to buy a mammoth in LK with tons of gold to spare, mostly from alchemy (and herbalism, to be fair). I rarely go out and gather herbs in LK - I use my time out and about to do dailies. I also know that inscription is a good money-maker from the piles of gold that a couple of guildies accumulated. I agree that most people have no clue of how to make money with crafting professions, and there are some where I imagine it's tough to come out ahead. But to categorically say that all crafting professions are money sinks is wrong.
