More new Jewelcrafting recipes found on the 3.1 PTR
Here's another nice set of tradeskill updates to show up on the 3.1 PTR recently, as Kaliope points out: New Jewelcrafting recipes.
First up, Shifting Twilight Opal will now finally exist in game. This purple gem should be a great possible choice for tanks looking to fill out a metagem or slot bonus requirement, especially. It's available from Tiffany Cartier in Dalaran.
The other new recipes are actually nice and conveniently straight from the trainer. There's 2 blue rings and 2 blue amulets, one each of caster and melee stats, with plenty of stamina and resilience:
They do require large amounts of blue gems to craft, but Kaliope notes that some of those gems, specifically Forest Emeralds and Sky Sapphires, are rather low profit anyway, and that this jewelry is likely to be in demand among players looking to break into the Arena at the start of the new season that's coming with 3.1. The new recipes are also all in prime position to be valid skillup paths, with the Shifting Twilight Opal learnable at 390 skill and the new PvP jewelry learnable at 420 skill.
Patch 3.1 brings us Ulduar, dual specs, significant changes to all the classes, and more! We've got you covered from top to bottom with our Guide to Patch 3.1.

Shifting has been missing since launch. Only took them 4 months to put it in...
As for the rest; too little, too late?

Not sure I understand what you mean by too little too late. The trainer is a little low on things to train, but at least Jewel crafting has some very nice benefits that are unique to jewel crafters (compared to, say... Tailoring) as well as some pretty popular things to sell (compared to engineering, even more so if ammo ceases to the consumed).
But maybe I missed your point.

I've seen alot of complaints that the crafted PvP gear is insufficient. And now, 4 months later, they add more *blue* crafted stuff?
Kakistocracy Mar 15th 2009 2:33PM
Hmm, I can't say that I've heard those as complaints about crafting. I guess the people I've heard comments from had compared the number of level ~80 crafted items with resilience and high stamina to the number of such items for level ~70 and found it to be a sizable increase (not that that says any thing about its quality).

Shifting twilight opal... for... tanks? MAYBE bears.
I know many survival hunters that will be happy to see that gem in the game, but not a whole lot of tanks.
maybesew Mar 15th 2009 12:30PM
Completely agree with you. Tanks have no problem with blue and red slots, and I can't imagine this being their choice, if they are taking the purple route.
I like the news reported on this site, the opinions, not so much.

Shifting gems have always been a great choice for Feral druids.
Jhestor Mar 15th 2009 1:46PM
Agreed, Bear tanks looking to fill meta gem requirements have been lacking good options for purples. This is GREAT.

yeah i am deffinitely getting one of these bad boys. The two most useful stats for a druid really. Especially with savage defence coming, agility will be even more desirable for crits.
Kcaz64 Mar 15th 2009 12:27PM
Tanks wouldn't use shifting twilight opal. Tanks would be using Guardian's.
jam Mar 15th 2009 1:21PM
It's perfectly fine for bears
RipeTomatoe Mar 15th 2009 1:30PM
remember that druids can be tanks as well, they LOVE agi
Karilyn Mar 15th 2009 3:53PM
More like...
Bears use Shifting
Warriors use Guardian's
Paladins use Sovereign
Death Knights use ??? (Regal?)
Chuck Mar 15th 2009 12:31PM
As a bear tank, who needs now to gem to gain more benefit from Savage Defense, I approve of this gem finally being aded.
I don't wanna go straight up agi, which is nice that this is finally in the game.

Jewelcrafting, Jewelcrafting, Jewelcrafting. Always Jewelcrafting.
Man, who up there at Blizz has the fetish for gemcutting?
Hoggersbud Mar 15th 2009 1:40PM
WTB more useful blue stats for DPS! Stamina? hah! Spirit? Ok, for a few specs, I suppose it's ok. MP/5? Same as Spirit. Spell Penetration? I double laugh!
Seriously, Red has about 8 options, Yellow 6, but Blue has only 4? Sigh.
If it weren't for tanking, none of them would be must-haves for anybody but casters.
Jay in Oregon Mar 15th 2009 1:51PM
Blizzard keeps talking about making Spirit a more interesting stat for Mages, so maybe I'll be able to put something in a Blue socket without sacrificing the socket bonus.
JamieG Mar 15th 2009 2:13PM
And for melee/hunters?
Cyno01 Mar 15th 2009 2:54PM
Nice for us rogues too. Straight Agi is generally worth more than crit or AP, but there werent any good options if you were hit and/or expertise capped and needed a blue for your meta.
Dankie Mar 15th 2009 6:56PM
^This.
Back in BC we had the shifting gem because it was BiS if we needed a blue, it'll be really nice for combat rogues since mute rogues should be gemming for AP (if I remember correctly) instead of straight agi. So YAY! Happy rogue here!
