Season 6 PVP sets are a true upgrade

Here's a really interesting followthrough by Blizzard I never thought I'd see. You may remember a thread a few months back where the OP complained that the PVP sets were boring-looking or visually uninspired; Zarhym responded matter-of-factly replied that the looks of the armor sets would improve over time. While PvE players receive loot that was (ostensibly) culled from the sinewy piles of continually larger and more powerful foes, PvP players receive gear crafted by their faction's tailors, smiths, and leatherworkers -- gear made to get the job done. As one became more and more renowned, their gear would reflect said prestige. I imagined that statement meant that the new models for Season 6 gear would be (subjectively) cool-looking and (objectively) different.
Well, MMO Champion has put up a mostly-complete preview of Season 6 gear models pulled from the seedy underbelly of patch 3.1's data files, and I'm a little surprised and a lot impressed.
Yes, you're probably having the initial reaction that I did upon clicking the link above. "These sets look like what's available now," you're saying, brows furrowed, lips pursed. They do look quite similar, but take a closer look. Things have changed!
We talk a lot about upgrades here, but these new sets go beyond stat increases -- the armor has been visibly beefed up, more parts of your body covered, more adornments added, more magic seeping from its seams.
The shaman head and shoulders appear to be morphing from the pebble-smooth surface into something far more menacing. The paladin's armor has become adorned with glowing gems and the neck protected. There's a gradual metamorphosis going on here that really shows what Blizzard was talking about when they said that the PvP set models would improve over time, and I can't wait to see what Season 7 looks like.

Enough of this crappy looking pvp gear. Bring back faction specific armor sets you lazy peons!
Discrete Mar 17th 2009 10:03AM
Not just crappy, but hellaciously borrowed. What's up with that shock-trooper/master chief helm for the DKs?
The Dark Wayne Mar 17th 2009 10:36AM
I'm more concerned that the warrior stuff just looks like last seasons mixed with some older rogue stuff

They say its going to improve over time. But come on! The retard football helmet from the 1960s that druids get is ridiculous! Its like some level 23 green. Anyone remember Helm of the Claw?
What irks me the most is that even Deadly Glad gear looks like this. No one can tell you busted your ass (or if you're a DK/Pally, not) because you look like every other nub in overpriced BG blues.

I agree with you 100%. At least the old Faction specific armor looked pretty decent, and not completely bland, and uninspired.
Hell, even Gladiator - Brutal Gladiator sets looked better than this, despite having the same models but a slightly different colour to their raiding counterparts.
Imho, bring back faction specific pvp gear, but make some available for Honor and some for Arena Points.

^ agreed

Philistines!

Nothing will ever top the S2 warlock gear. Bring back that designer.
Blixkreeg Mar 17th 2009 10:02AM
@Michael Sacco
I hope your entire post was sarcasm... because this is pathetic. The new models are tragically lazy and very unimpressive. This is coming from someone who can't stand arena and couldn't care less about season gear. Even considering that, I thought I'd speak up.

i'm no doctor, but ugly plus ugly usually equals ugly.
I REALLY like the concept of evolving armor over tiers (although far less so in the pve world ofc)
it's just a shame they started with such ugly sets (apologies to those who think their pvp set isn't ugly(er).)

I'm kinda getting the feeling from this post that you're confused on what season were in right now considering you're excited for season 7 sets when season 6 isn't even out yet.
Either way I highly doubt these are the finalized season 6 sets unless blizzard has gotten extremely lazy as most of these sets look almost identical to the season 5 sets.

Mage: Awesome. Shaman/Warlock: Excellent. Priest--oh, please! How boring. No attention to the apron detailing at all. Really disappointing.

The Druid set looks especially perverted. Are they Savage Undies he''s wearing?
Discrete Mar 17th 2009 10:02AM
That's not a complete set, it appears they were only able to mine the shoulders and helm.
Flint Mar 17th 2009 10:21AM
The nature-loving druids have an 'au naturel' theme, of course.

@ Discrete | thanks capt obvious
Jamesisgreat Mar 17th 2009 11:06AM
I guess they figured that seeing as nobody ever gets to see druid armor anyway (seeing as we're always in forms), why bother? ;)
Clbull Mar 17th 2009 1:07PM
NYI, thats why its just the helm and shoulders atm.
Balius Mar 17th 2009 1:29PM
In all fairness, druid sets are notoriously bad looking. Nudity is probably going to be an improvement.
Kakistocracy Mar 17th 2009 1:48PM
Well if you saw someone wearing that running at you, wouldn't you think twice about fighting them?
