The Queue: You have been pwned by a grue
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
What is a grue?
The grue is a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale. (source)

Jeni asked...
"Regarding the shift in glyphs...what happens if you want to use a Glyph of Levitate in both specs? What if you don't care enough about your off spec to get new glyphs each time you switch specs (for instance, keep your holy glyphs when you switch specs to shadow to quest?) Does it eat up your glyphs anyhow?"
When you purchase dual specs a new glyph pane will activate that is bound to your second spec. It will be empty, and every time you switch to your second spec you'll automatically activate the new glyph pane.
It is not an optional process. You cannot choose to have use just one set of glyphs for each spec. If you want to have the Glyph of Levitate in both specs, then you'll need to include it in both glyph sets. While I know some people disagree with me, I don't really see this as too much of a pain because most of us spend all of 5 minutes buying glyphs for a spec anyways. So one time spending 5 minutes reglyphing isn't too bad.
Ian R asked...
"Do you have to beat the old Vault of Archavon to get to the new one?"
Very unlikely. Blizzard has came out clearly against any sort of attunements for Wrath of the Lich King, and requiring a raid be previously completed before being able to enter or engage in a new one is just another way of saying "attunement."
But with that said, we don't know a whole lot about the new raid, just some pics.
Randron asked...
"How do I change my picture for my comments?"
First, our comment system sucks and I'm sorry that it does. Click on your name as it appears in the comments, this will bring you to a new page. Login with your name and password at that new page. You'll see an option in the upper right hand side to change your picture.
As far as it not working correctly, it can take some time. I changed mine from some stupid gem I found initially back when I started here to an emo picture of myself. I changed the image around 3 months ago and it still isn't showing up all the time. It fails too, and we've complained about it to the people we need to complain to, but that's all we can do.
Namus asked...
"Last night while running Heroic UK with a bunch of friends (DK tank, Spriest, Resto Druid, FF Mage) and a PUG (Spriest), then this dropped from the trash http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44312 since it was our DK's first heroic as a tank it was a clear upgrade for him, so we started to congratulate him (you know, calling him lucky bastard and stuff) when the pugged Spriest started complaining that it was BoE, we all passed on the roll to give it to the DK who rolled need, the priest left party (didn't roll at all) and our druid started whispering to him asking what was the problem and he said that since the item was BoE we all should have the same right to roll on it regardless it was an upgrade for our tank, our druid replied that the usual rules are mainspec over offspec and need before greed in heroics/raids usually and we didn't even think about rolling against a class that was obviously going to use it and not just vendor it, at the end the priest called us a bunch of noobs, the druid called him a greedy bastard blah blah.
My question is: are we a bunch of noobs for giving a BoE random drop for a person that is actually going to use it? or should we have rolled for it since we all could sell it on the AH? what do you guys think?"
TLDR Version: We were running a heroic and pugged a DPS spot. When a tanking item dropped we wanted to give it to our new tank, even though it was a BoE epic. The pugger threw a fit and left, even though we were going to let him roll. Are we a bunch of noobs?
Not really. I would have done the same thing in your situation. Loot drama always amazes me as I see the following as truths:
- Loot doesn't matter in this game. It's clear the game has become about skill and encounter knowledge.
- Loot is just a bunch of pixels on the screen. People are getting angry over pixels. How about instead they turn on the news and get angry about something bad that's happening in the world.
- It's a fraken game.
- The average player spends a good amount of time in-game. How many purples and blues are they going to see in a week? The answer is a lot. The loot will drop again.
- Being a nice guy is more important than getting loot or gold for loot. The benefits from personal relationships you'll develop by being a nice guy vastly outweighs any sort of character development potential.

To be fair, most of the problems GC says make Naxx too easy are being changed. Mana regen is getting hit hard, which means healers can't just heal constantly while the DPS lollygags and the tanks shrug off hits. It will also make AoE damage more of a concern when every bit of healing has to matter.
Also, most of those problems aren't gear related, but rather gameplay, which is sort of opposite of your position. Playing well has more to do with player reaction and action than the passive increase of stats, and it's player action GC is talking about in that post.

BoE epic = gold
Everyone needs gold.
Therefore, BoE epic = Everyone Need.
There are a couple of exceptions of course:
If its a guild run, then obviously, the guildmaster can set rules ahead of time stating BoEs go to whoever needs, or to the guild bank, or whatever.
If its a group of friends, then yeah, they'll probably all gladly pass for the guy who needs it most.
But in a pug, you gotta stick to the everyone Need it rule. If u win and want to give it to the guy who needed it most, then go for it, thats your choice cuz you won it. But you can't rob the other guy of his chance to win it when he needs the G just as much as the other guy needs the gear. In fact, he could be using that G to buy a different BoE epic that he CAN use, for all you know.
Plus, you never know when someone is going to ninja-Need it anyway, so you might as well all Need, that way one of you non-ninjas can give it to the guy who actually needs it if you want to.

Everyone needs gold.
Everyone needs gear but not necessarily the gear that drops.
Not everyone who can roll will need both, those that do can roll need, the others can roll greed. It's been like this for years. What's the point in a greed button at all if we could simply say "Well we all need gold?"
Amaxe Mar 17th 2009 2:28PM
The fallacy is this. Some people need the gear more than they need the gold.
If there was a choice between a gear upgrade for my shaman and gold for my shaman, I think gear upgrade would be better.

Actually, I understood Ian R's question differently. I thought he was asking, "is the new boss added to the same instance as Archavon, so that you have to get past Archavon to get to the new boss, or is the new boss a separate instance?". I was wondering that myself. If the new boss is in a separate instance, it might get harder to get groups for Archie--though if people are sick of Archie and/or no longer need his loot, a new instance may be preferable.

In regards to the loot question, I don't see the point of the Spriest getting so upset that he couldn't sell the BOE. With purples (and gold) so easy to get, I can't imagine the sell price being all that impressive.
Jason Mar 17th 2009 11:59AM
Does TL;DR mean "too long; don't read?". I think I just now figured that out after all this time'. >_>
Hoggersbud Mar 17th 2009 12:40PM
"didn't read" is usually how I see it expressed.
Jason Mar 17th 2009 8:15PM
Ahh, thank you!
Praezin Mar 17th 2009 12:01PM
Loot drama...sigh. Everything will drop again, just need to have patience.

People are forgetting the important part of this post:
Who wants to go start a WoW based mud with me?...
You have successfully created a level 1 undead rogue.
You feel a tingling sensation as if you're just waking up from a long nap. You find yourself in an unfamiliar location. It seems you're in a mausoleum. Your muscles are sore and feel like they've never been used before.
You notice a sickly undead women in front of you with a broken jawbone. She has a yellow question mark floating above her head. She greets you warmly (or as warmly as she can considering she has no blood running through her veins). There is an exit behind you.
What do you wish to do?

If Blizz ever creates a quest with a Babel Fish, I'm quitting :P

A BoE epic is something very rare. Heck, a blue can be hard enough to get that I'd ask before somebody rolled need (though since I've had 3-4 of the same BOE blue drop in some instances, it hasn't been very often so far). But I've never seen more than one non-boss epic drop in any Northrend instance. I know they have, other people are sellling them, and some people must have gotten them while grouped, but me? All I ever found was that gorilla ball trinket. Which is hardly a priority for anyone, and it's BOP, so nobody is selling it anyway. So we all rolled need, nobody was upset. Heck, I wouldn't have minded too much if somebody needed it, I don't mind if somebody needs another soulbound item they can use. That's fair.
But a BOE epic? That's money and very great utility. If you are with a group of close friends, yeah, sure you can pass to one person. If you've got one pugger though, you ought to think about it, and at least offer them a chance at it, maybe they'll e willing to sell to you, or take a guaranteed slice of the profit for selling it. 4K gold split 4 ways is still 1k gold each, which isn't bad.
Asteh Mar 18th 2009 7:18AM
Ah, gotta try the picture change.
EmprssChaime Mar 17th 2009 12:24PM
I'll throw my 2 cents in--
If I don't need it, I pass on it and give it to someone else who does need it.
Simple.
Why don't people get that concept?
SunwellVialist Mar 17th 2009 12:27PM
Selfishness.
It comes down to that.
"Oh my god! I cannot use that, but I'm supposed to just give it away to someone else, even though I could shard/sell/sniff it?! NOWAI!"
It's sad, really...
Hoggersbud Mar 17th 2009 12:31PM
Or maybe the selfishness is on the part of the people thinking "Hey, look at that sparkly upgrade for me, I'm the one who needs it, regardless of how fair it might be to the other people I'm with!" .
Not sad, but kinda greedy if you think about it.
In a certain light. Which just goes to show, there's more than one side to a story.
Balius Mar 17th 2009 12:21PM
I'm going to have to say that everyone passing on the epic, while nice, was not something you should have done if you wanted to be fair. In a group of five friends, or even five people who regularly run together, passing loot to the player that needs it is great, but as soon as one person joins that isn't in that clique, the group is either treated as a PUG or VASTLY unfair to that last person.
Giving the tank some awesome tanking shoulders is, ostensibly, meant to be a nice gesture. And the four friends will all see it as such. The PUGed priest, however, just saw the group make a decision that potentially cost her 1000G, and left her no options but to roll need on an item that the group had passed on, or accept that the four friends are going to overrule her no matter what happens. You decided what SHE had to do, and left her with two bad options or quitting. She doesn't have any investment in some stranger getting good gear, it won't make her life better that he has the shoulders, the only involvement she has in that item is the chance to sell it.
In the future, roll on it. Give the PUGed player a chance at the item that drops. If you win the item, you can still pass it on to the person who needs it yourself, and you won't have treated another member of the party as if they don't exist or made them feel like a ninja for sticking up for themselves.

Not to be atagonistic about it all, but you know, as an enchanter, I could ALWAYS use those shards in a run.. and that abyss crystal at the end? AWESOME. I need it to buy recipes, do enchants, and hey, I can even sell them. And it's my profession, so, clearly, by the reasoning that everyone needs gold and not gear upgrades, I should get to roll on all BOP loot even when it's not an upgrade. I should just get to shard it and people can try to save up for an epic from the crystals and shards I may or may not share with them, cuz, really, I need gold too.
Me and my traveller's tundra mammoth that I got purely from saving and doing dailies and yet, giving a 5k belt to a hunter in our raid who couldn't attend that day and yet I knew he needed it say so. Cuz if I hadn't sold that belt, there's no way I could buy the mammoth at 17k...wait. I just said I gave the belt to him, didn't I?
I didn't use any guides or 'tricks' to getting my gold. I just did quests, was careful in what I bought, and did almost the maximum amount of dailies each day (which isn't necessary for people with less time, just pick the fastest areas, do those, do what you want, and don't buy frivolous things. It's that simple. It may take a little longer, but still that simple.) I also gave away another pair of BOE epic boots from 25Naxx worth around 2k to a fellow boomkin in the raid who couldn't make it another night. The first time those boots dropped, I was given them immediately because they were the best upgrade for me. This is not something I have forgotten, and when items do go to roll (which only happens in the raid I'm in when someone in there could not really use the item), I choose not to sell and instead look to see who I can help most with it. Yet, as I said, I'm still the one who they ask to pull out the mammoth in Malygos and Sarth and outside of Naxx in order to get repairs and quick reagents. I entered Wrath with probably less gold than alot of people. I just chose to go for something that looked fun to me and relentlessly sent off my gold to a bank alt so I couldn't spend it easily.
Gold is nice.
Epics can be bought with gold, it's true.
Integrity and decency, however, cannot be bought with gold. Fortunately, just like you can pick a class in wow, you can pick whether you're going to HAVE class in wow.
