Battle.net accounts coming to the EU

We knew this would happen eventually, especially since the name of the Authenticator changed on the PTR from being World of Warcraft specific to a more broad Battle.net name, but the fact that it's coming without formal notice is a bit surprising! If you're unfamiliar with what a Battle.net account actually is, it's more or less the same as your WoW account but instead of an account name, it uses your e-mail address and it spans all Blizzard games. Considering the Starcraft II beta is rumored to be starting quite soon, this is probably good timing for the switch.
We have no idea if this switch is happening in the US yet, but it's probably a safe assumption that it will. Or if it hasn't, we'll be seeing it very soon. If we find out more, we'll be sure to let you know.
Update: It does look like this is coming to the US soon as well.

Does this mean we'll get Chilly now?
I miss Chilly.
On a more serious note, could anybody explain what would be the advantage of switching to a Battle.net account? Will we be able to chat with the Alliance Sorceresses of Warcraft III?
I still don't understand the big difference, if there is any. :P

There isn't a big difference. If you've bought an authenticator or participated in the WotLK beta I think you've already gone through the process (make an account, tie all your Blizz games to it).

Chilly! Oh, I sure hope he's coming back. I love penguins. :)

Unified identity. i.e. the major difference between the PS3 online strategy and the XBox online strategy. (I refuse to say the Wii has an online strategy.)
Duck Knight Mar 19th 2009 5:56PM
Meh. The Wii's getting better. Nintendo's finally starting to realize that Friend Codes should be an optional feature, as evidenced by the way online play works for Mario Kart Wii.
But we digress.
A unified account might not be the best idea, since getting your account stolen on one game means you're screwed for all the others; unless each individual game has it's own separate password, as with Mythic's account system. (known for Warhammer Online and DAoC, among other games.)

ooh, I want my Chilly back!
Here's hoping he comes with the change :)

I went to us.battle.net, created an account, and added my WoW account. I successfully logged in using the battle.net email and password. However, after login there was no new mail, and no Chilly.. so I can confirm that the in-game mail is either slow, or no Chillys for changing over :(

When I try to log into my Account Management on the US WoW website, it's now asking me for my Account Name/Email Address. Clicking the Account Management button on the WoW website links me to a "us.battle.net" site. Sounds like this is also coming to US as well!

I also grabbed a screenshot of the page. The link is to Photobucket.

ryuzaki90 Mar 19th 2009 3:36PM
I just successfully merged my wow account to my previous battle.net account.
ryuzaki90 Mar 19th 2009 3:41PM
Update: Works fine for logging in. If you attempt to log in with your old info, it will say somethign to the effect that your account was merged with your bnet account, and to please us that to log in.
Enjoy =] Well, enjoy when they start implementing social stuff.

Well... I never!
ShadowMagus Mar 19th 2009 10:55PM
Good luck sticking with it for long. You'll be forced to upgrade eventually.
