German Social Affairs minister calls for higher rating on World of Warcraft
Germany is reeling from a shooting rampage committed by a 17-year-old, and as happens in many of these situations, politicians are looking for answers to why a young man would do this to his community. One of the answers they've found so far is videogames. While we don't actually know if the young man played games or not (or what he played), Germany's Minister for Social Affairs Mechthild Ross-Luttmann is calling for a few games, World of Warcraft among them, to be moved up from an age 12+ rating to an adults-only classification. The tie between the shooter and WoW is slim. But a new study over there says that 50,000 to 60,000 minors could be classified as addicted to videogames. And the combination of the two events is causing Ross-Luttman to call for stronger ratings on "addictive" games like World of Warcraft. It's also interesting to note that in the US, the game is rated T by the ESRB, which actually calls for children 13 and up to play it, one year older than the German standard.
But of course there are two conclusions here. First, every parent needs to take responsibility for what their younger children do: if these kids are addicted, parents need to step in and make sure things get straightened out. As a former employee of a gaming retail store, I can tell you that ratings only go so far. The responsibility has to lie with the parents. And secondly, while Ross-Luttmann is apparently using the shooting to try and push this agenda against addiction, the young man involved in the shooting was experiencing deep depression, and had access to firearms that he probably shouldn't have had. Changing game ratings is fine, but it won't do anything to help when you've got much bigger problems to deal with first.

Blaming videogames for something that goes wrong? How very original.

Allow me to quote Chris Rock:
"Everybody is wanting to know what music were the kids listening to, or what movies were they watching. Who gives a f@#% what they was watching! Whatever happened to crazy? What, you can't be crazy no more? Should we eliminate crazy from the dictionary?"
Nemesis Mar 19th 2009 7:53PM
Chris Rock is God damn spot on! Some people are simply not right in the head, look at Fritzl for example he's just pure evil, nothing worn with him and he's bullshitting about his past to get an easier sentence.

Let's see, result of a violent rampage in WOW? A few people complaining about their quest givers being dead, maybe some repair bills?
Result of a violent rampage in the real world? Dead people? Hospitalized people...
Yeah, I'll encourage more children to play WOW to work out their rage.

contrary to popular belief, we germans are not baby eating, uneducated barbarians that are constantly plotting the us's demise.

True, Germans tend to be well educated...

Using a farcical premise to push a fascist agenda? Yeah Germans have never done THAT before.
Guapa Mar 25th 2009 10:52AM
Well Ascal, being German myself I can only partially agree to you. We do not eat babys, as they have a very bad cost to weight ratio. And compared to the rest of the world we are rather well educated, fine. But most of us do infact constantly work on the demise of the US. It's just that we are not very good at it...
On topic: Every single fu*$%&& time someone goes postal in Germany, the same old discussion starts again. However, there are never any new or even good arguments. The topic is just used by some bastards to promote themselves.
The average gamer only gets aggressive when he has to listen to the bullshit they are told by the self-announced matter experts.
No wonder these people get the impression that gamers are aggressive, but it's those people's fault, not the game's and not the gamer's...

you have GOT to be kidding me... I thought this was a dead issue already? People are always looking for a scapegoat for shitty parenting, and video games are ALWAYS the first to catch the flak for this sort of occurrence. This is utterly ridiculous. Blame Marlyn Manson while you're at it, you degenerates.
"Video games don't affect children. If Pac Man had any effect on us as kids, we'd all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music."
Damn skippy.
Namus Mar 19th 2009 4:36PM
Lol, actually I remember some guy giving a lecture at my school years ago against rock music, he claimed that his son commited suicide after listening to Marilyn Manson songs, speaking of denial, jeez!

This "video game addiction" stuff is getting old.
Yeah, if you take away our WoW, we'll be depressed for a while. It's how we spent our time, for Christ's sake.
Take away my parents' television and they'd be lost and bored for at least two months before finding something to do with themselves.
And 90% of the time when an athlete loses a leg or otherwise suffers an injury that precludes them from playing their sport anymore, they become suicidal for a while. And they'll always have that pang of regret for the rest of their lives.
It's not addiction, it's human nature to be attached to our hobbies. They define us to an extent.

Dude was playing Counter Strike and similar games. WoW wasn't mentioned in the list of games he played. He was also severely depressed, had seen a shrink for a while, dropped out of counseling after checking with his parents.
He was also an outcast in school, didn't pass the army checkup (every boy gets that between his 17th and 18th birthday) for reasons of showing signs of being clinically depressed.. German military felt like it wasn't a good thing to let this kid have access to a gun.. his dad left his beretta on his night stand, with ammunition nearby and even had shown the kid how to shoot it on the gun range he regularly went to (dad had to sign consent forms to bring his kid to the range -- btw. German law allows kids 16+ to be brought to gun ranges)
Kid was a psycho, parents didn't pay attention to it, things went wrong.
Its all the video games' fault. Evil software companies.
Context helps.

Your an idiot.
On another note, I understand Germany's need for answers, after any tragedy people look for some one or something to blame. A
After reading some of the German news reports, they made comment to him playing FPS games and being very interested in firearms, so the imediate knee jerk reaction is BAN ALL VIOLENCE IN COMPUTER GAMES. Admittedly WoW is and can be very viloent, the whole aim of the game is to kill things, but to try and ban or increase the rating on games such as these is pointless, they are there for law makers to be happy and say they made an effort, they are ignored by parents and serve no purpose other than the excuse "we told you so"
IMHO the partial blame rests on the parents, I am a farther of 2 boys who are still in pampers, and I hope that when they are of an age to play games, I will sit them down and have a chat about game addiction and knowing when to put down the "rail gun" and step into the sun light.
