The Queue: Item level, attunements, and more

Good morning/afternoon/generic time of day, everyone! I don't have anything funny or interesting to say here, so let's skip that part and pretend that I did it! Yay! Now imagine there's a silly poll for you to vote in! Exclamation points! More exclamation points! Not enough exclamation points yet! We need more!
Okay, that's enough of them.
Erogroth asked...
"How exactly does item level work? From what I gather its almost like talent points for an item. So any item that is the same level should be about equal in how good it is. However often items of the same item level are no where near equal. So what's the deal?"
This is one of those questions that could have a really, really long answer that potentially includes a lot of numbers and formulas. For my sanity (and possibly yours) I'm going to simplify it.
No, not all items are made equal. This is because not all stats have the same 'cost' on items. One really big example here is Stamina. Stamina costs less than any other pure stat on gear. You can get a fairly large amount of it for a relatively low cost, compared to something like Strength. Moreover, the rating conversions are not the same across all stats, which could cause even more strange item results. The Armor Penetration rating required to get 1% penetration would cost more of the item budget than the crit rating required to get 1% crit. Note, those stats and numbers are just examples that I pulled out of thin air, so please don't take them as law.
On top of that, stats on items have a sort of diminishing return. The higher a single stat stacks on an item, the higher the cost of that stat. So an item that has only Agility on it would have fewer total stat points on it than an item with Agility and Strength, for example.
So there are a lot of factors that can determine what item is the 'best' for its iLevel. A lot of different things come into play when itemizing. Wowwiki has a pretty good guide to the whole spiel if you want to dig deeper. If you want even more than that, just search around Elitist Jerks. You'll find more on it than you could ever possibly want, most likely.
Bob Dewane asked...
"Has ther been any word as to whether or not Blizz will use the "gate" system again in Ulduar to control raid progression? I know it caused a ton of controversy in Sunwell."
We've seen no indication of this on the PTR. This doesn't mean it can't be plugged in at the last minute without anybody knowing, but I quite seriously doubt that they would pull something like that. I don't think we'll be seeing anything like those gates in Ulduar.
JPheenix asked...
"What happens if you queue for a battleground as a group, does everyone appear post-BG back where they were when they went in, or back where the leader was when he/she went in?"
They go back where they were when they entered the battleground, no matter who queued them up or where the party leader is in the world. Everyone goes back to their own original location.
Laynne asked...
"Are we ever going to see 'Know Your Lore' again?"
Yes, absolutely. I got burned out writing it while trying to keep up with all of the new revelations and bits of info that Wrath of the Lich King was providing, so I just took a break from it for awhile. I know I disappointed a lot of people by doing so, but I think some cases no column is better than a bad column, and I personally think this was one of those cases.
I'm going to be working with a couple of the other writers to bring it back soon.
ScytheNoire asked...
"Did Blizzard ever actually remove the requirements for old instances, like the Seal to get into UBRS or the Aqual Quintessence for Molten Core, etc?"
In most cases, yes, those things were removed. You don't need a Seal for UBRS anymore, and it can be solo'd. The Quintessence isn't needed for Molten Core, either. The runes by each boss are extinguished automatically when a boss is killed, you don't need to touch it.

Someone still needs to open the gate for those without the key, but you don't need it to zone in anymore. This was changed quite some time back.
exiled247 Mar 20th 2009 12:08PM
i think that doing away with the "gate" system is a bad idea. granted, most people won't agree with me, but blizz is making things way too easy now... it takes the fun out of it when you can just run in and start clearing everything from the start (assuming you're geared for it).
zappo Mar 20th 2009 1:25PM
I think the point of the gate system was that people could really get involved with the shattered sun offensive. When you first hit the shores it was like the beginning of the assault. Everything on the isle was hostile. Each step brought not only new quests but also felt like you were in the effort of taking each post. If they hadn't had the gate system in place what would have a happened? You might see it the first day, then take a day or two off for say the weekend, then come back and find the entire event over because some uber-guild on your server blew through everything.
Keep in mind that the shattered sun thing was the debut of lots of daily quests and other things for non raiders. This time it looks like the 3.1 patch is all about Uldar and if you don't raid.. well tough luck. No need for a gate system for a patch like this.
exiled247 Mar 20th 2009 4:09PM
I guess that's a pretty good point, i overlooked that... i guess i was just thinking they would impliment new quests or whatever in order to get into ulduar, especially since they like "phasing" northrend in order to kind of enforce progression.
rosencratz Mar 20th 2009 12:15PM
This was removed before Wrath even came out.
exiled247 Mar 20th 2009 12:15PM
thought of this after i posted, but when it comes to the turtle mount... any word on how it's going to work exactly? you can use it water, cool, but if you're mounted on it will fatigue not kick in or are you still limited to how far out you can go?
Braundo Mar 20th 2009 12:22PM
I can't imagine that Blizzard would ever remove fatigue for players that go outside the "intended" areas of the sea. It's just a mechanism to prevent people from swimming out to the edge of the world, or getting to undeveloped/incomplete areas.
rosencratz Mar 20th 2009 12:24PM
Why would a turtle mount change the fatigue mechanic where a flying mount doesn't?
It's just a super-rare thing for conveniences and jollies.
Shizzle Mar 20th 2009 12:24PM
Will talbards ever give rep during raids?
peagle Mar 20th 2009 1:03PM
Seeing as that would further reduce the number of raiders interested in running heroics, i doubt it.

"pcoming patches
* Patch 3.1 - Patch 3.1 will be the first content patch of the expansion and is already done. It will include Ulduar raid instance (10 and 25 Man)
* Patch 3.2 - Patch 3.2 will add a new and still unknown raid instance to the game.
* Patch 3.3 - Patch 3.3 will introduce Icecrown Citadel and should also resolve the storyline of Ashbringer."
Is there any clue in the game, what could be the next raid instance after Ulduar in 3.2?
For BC the raid instances where all pretty clear from the beginning, only the KJ one was not known from the start.
But ist there any information what could be the 3.2 raid?
Doffencrag Mar 20th 2009 1:48PM
"But ist there any information what could be the 3.2 raid?"
The Cave of Caerbannog. You heard it here first.
Balius Mar 20th 2009 2:24PM
Could be an Emerald Dream raid, which there are hints at in Wrath lore, or a Caverns of Time raid (love to be there for the Sundering, myself)
Khanmora Mar 20th 2009 3:09PM
We're likely to see future raids under Wyrmrest Temple, in the empty portals near OS. I doubt it would be Emerald Dream raid, because there is so much lore tied into the Emerald Dream as to create a full expansion just from that content.
Malygos and the blue dragon/magic storyline has been pursued with 3.0. With Yogg-Saron being in Ulduar, the old god lead up in the quests is being finished. There also seem to be a lot of bosses that will be dealing with the titan storyline in Ulduar also. With Arthas slated to be taken on in 3.3, then we won't be seeing a DK/Ashbringer storyline before then.
What's left? Well, we haven't finished the story with the dragons and the demon soul. We are obviously still fighting the Infinite Dragonflight. There is space for a raid instance down near Azol'Nerub and An'kahet, with a continuation of the nerubian story line. There are lots of avenues they could still explore in 3.2.
Caz Mar 20th 2009 3:33PM
I'm really curious about the 'unknown' raid coming in 3.2. Could be Uldum, which would sort of make sense as a followthrough to Ulduar, if only to complete the storyline.
Could be Grim Batol, which would make sense considering all the dragon related stuff going on.
Could be someting totally unexpected - like Gilneas as an outdoor raid zone.
An Azjol Nerub raid is what I most anticipate to happen, though I'd prefer something back on Kalimdor or Eastern Kingdoms.
Soatari Mar 20th 2009 1:31PM
Can you fish while riding the new turtle mount?
peagle Mar 20th 2009 1:50PM
What is the clam opening/stacking capability of the new sea mounts?
Erogroth Mar 20th 2009 2:03PM
First, Thank you for answering my question in today's column. Also thank you to the reader yesterday who gave some insight into it as well.
Second, I really miss Know Your Lore too. It was actually the column that got me reading wowinsider in the first place. I was googleing info on Ashbringer and found your articles. I have been a wowinsider fan ever since and I look forward to reading more of Know Your Lore. Perhaps you can start with some good Ulduar info.

Does Invisibility Potion reset threat?
benp Mar 20th 2009 2:10PM
MMO Champion casually says:
"The Argent Tournament is at the north of Icecrown, this is a new quest hub created to introduce the upcoming Coliseum raid instance in Patch 3.2."
Did I miss something about the new raid in 3.2? Since when do we know about 'Coliseum'?
