The Colosseum: Gladiator Lamures
The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator (Brutal, Vengeful, Merciless, and otherwise), to interview some of the top Arena fighters in the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Netherdrakes.Rogues were certainly a dominant force in Season 4. However, while it's easy to say Rogues were powerful, that does mean that any rogue struggling for the highest tiers of achievements had to fight other, equally powered opponents. In that highly competitive atmostphere, Lamures from Twisting Nether graduated to the Gladiator title.
Now firmly rooted in Season 5, however, rogues are struggling. Death Knights dominate the season, highlighting the weakpoints of Rogue class. Undaunted, Lamures continues to achieve a 2454 team rating. With that in mind, the Gladiator spared time to talk to the Colosseum about his experience in the Arena.
WoW Insider: Who are your teammates right now? What's the general plan behind your composition? What challenges does your team have? How do you prefer to run your comp?
Lamures: My only real serious team would be my 2v2. (My 3v3 is with an alcoholic hunter, Snolas who breaks CC). My 2v2 is Discipline Priest/Rogue. My teamate is Eragoan, a Priest and myself, Lamures, A rogue.
As priest/rogue we usually CC/Mana Burn a target and focus something else.
Hunter/healers are extreme pains in the ass to fight as Priest/Rogue. They just place Viper Sting on the priest and CC myself, then kill the priest (if they're smart). Otherwise, if they're dumb, they let me get a Sap and opener, run around with the Diablo 2 Barbarian's Jawbone helmet and Wing Clip me, we'll win.
I'd like to believe that we run a Priest/Rogue comp fairly aggressively.
WoW Insider: What's your opening strategy? What do you like to do as soon as the gate opens?
Lamures: Aside from being horribly ADD on listing the class comp and naming the wrong one 3 times in a row, I usually find a target to set as my focus for CC, sap it and open on the other enemy. (Also, I make sure I get a bubble from a priest so I can run through Concescration and Death & decay.)
WoW Insider: Which mods do you use -- how have you customized your screen?
Lamures: I use quite a lot. X-perl, Dominoes, Omnicc, Afflicted, Gladius, and Recount are the most prominent in Arena. (I check back in Arena to see what went wrong.)
WoW Insider: How do you work out target designation? (Does someone call it out, or is everyone on their own to figure it out?)
Lamures: The both of us generally know what we're going to do, but I call out alot of focus targets. However, if we see something crucial that involves a target switch, either of us will call it out depending on who noticed it first.
WoW Insider: How do you schedule your playtime? Do you try and work during "good times to queue?" Is this different now than in previous seasons?
Lamures: Whenever the two of us are online, feel like doing arenas, and not raiding. We don't try to do them at specific times. Some people we know like to wait until 6 am on Monday to do arenas, which is pretty much cheating to get your rating since you fight stupidly easy teams... over... and over again... and farm them.
WoW Insider: What's been the biggest change in your strategy between each bracket of ratings? (1500s, 1600s) Is there a big change for this season?
Lamures: At the higher brackets, you need to be alot more aggresive. My priest can be a lot more defensive and just sit back and heal in the lower brackets. But as you progress in the brackets, both the priest and myself have to be coordinated and offensive to get a win against teams.
WoW Insider: What signals to you that you need to radically change strategy midmatch? (And how do you accomplish that change?)
Lamures: Well, if our burst fails and what we're doing isn't working, or my priest needs mana, I need to be defensive/aggresive at the same time. (I know that sounds retarded but I'll explain.)
What I tend to do is play defensive to avoid taking as much damage as I can, but play aggresive enough where the opponent will feel like he needs to stick on me to survive. I only need to do this for 10 seconds or so for a good drink in on the priest. As a rogue, this generally means using stunlock, gouging every time it's up, and a small bit of kiting when you're out of energy.
WoW Insider: What's the key for your composition's strategy? Are there multiple tactics you can use?
Lamures: For the most part, there's 3 ways we win a match that went in our favor.
Mana Burn the healer and kill the dps.
Chain CC one of the targets and wear down the second one eventually killing it in a good CC.
And my favorite, get a really good opening Sap and Fear (generally both targets eating the fear), then popping Tricks of the Trade on my priest and nuking a target right away before it gets time to do anything. If they live through this burst, it usually means both of them blew their trinkets and quite a few large cooldowns to survive, and we're definetly getting ready to claim victory.
WoW Insider: You hear a lot about clicking versus binding. Which skills do you still click, which do you tend to bind?
Lamures: I don't think anyone should be clicking anything you use in PvP combat in arenas. I have everything bound from bandages to Preparation, even my weapon swap macro! There's two moves I click in Arena, and that's Mount and my "/tar a-z" macro, which is only pressed once right as the gate opens. As a rogue, I don't even mount up.
WoW Insider: What are you trying to improve?
Lamures: A lot of losses are due to just class mechanics and such. Death Knight gets Freedom, pops Icebound Fortitude, Anti-Magic Shell, and sits on my priest. I go to Disarm him for 10 seconds and he's still able to spam Icy Touch and Death Coil on my priest to burn him down. Not much I can improve on for that.
But in terms of what we can do to improve, I'd say getting better survivability for our priest against DK teams and making sure I get a Sap and Opener on the other team.
WoW Insider: A lot has been made of healers not having a strong role in Season 5. What do you think about that commentary?
Lamures: World of Burstcraft is definitely what they'll call this season. But healers are still good. Not going to lie, Shamans and Paladins definitely have it significantly easier than Druids and Priests do.
WoW Insider: What are you hoping to see improved in 3.1? We've seen some changes, obviously, but there's more to come.
Lamures: The only change I'm looking forward to is poisons on a Proc Per Minute basis and glyph changes for rogues. Nothing much in our ability list getting changed.
Though the changes to Priests are pretty significant, I'm going to imagine the shadowfiend changes will be the biggest since they won't be kited as much. (Almost every time it's used, the shadowfiend is kited or sits there swapping between targets. Even when told otherwise, which gives no mana back to the priest.)

No words on what poisons or gear he uses?

Yea this article is really lacking in finer details, and the screenshot of his armory is clearly his pve gear/pve spec.

I use two sets of daggers, double Sinister's Revenge for my slow dagger set and Webbed Death / Deadly Glad's Shiv for my fast set.
I use my fast daggers with Wound Poison Mainhand / Deadly Offhand when I fight teams that I sit on the Deathknight, Ret Pally, Feral Druid or Warrior. I get 5 stacks of deadly poison, a full rupture, and full garrote and where them down.
When they get below 35% hp I Cold Blood envenom them (hitting anywhere from 5.5-6.5k damage) and finish them off, most of the time.
Against any other team that I'm NOT focusing the above targets, I use my two slow daggers with wound poison / mind numbing poison and do the usual, replacing rupture with expose armor.
The rupturing explains why I use 2 peices of valorous for the 2 set bonus.
I hope this explains more about my gear choice and spec choice.

For some reason, I thought he was an enhancement shaman. I was like awesome (since I really want enhancement pvp to work, resto is boring for pvp), but I got burned I guess. ITS A ROGUE!

Anyone else love how the Rogue only sports 465 Reslience?
As much as things change, it looks like some things still stay the same...

I've ran across this guy a few times on my server.

Interesting, I'm glad Lamures explained his setup. I'f he is still hanging around, I have a couple other questions:
1) If you sit on plate wearers, how come you don't put points into Setup? Seems like the combo points would really help. In addition, what Glyphs do you use? Do you SnD or Eviscerate?
2) How do you manage to stay alive with such little resilience? I sometimes wear 711 and still get crit for 9k by Ferocious Bite or Execute.
3) I'm guessing you think Rogues have good survivability. What would you liked to see changed in 3.1? Do you think Backstab and Hemo are fine, or would you like to see Killing Spree become a good PVP spec with the buffs going on there?
4) This one might seem a bit noobish, but do you use Mutilate whenever you have the energy for it, or do you find yourself pooling a lot? I'm trying to become a better player and this has intrigued me lately.

1) The reason I don't get setup is because of what I lose by giving it up. if I get setup I would have to take points out of my Camouflage. Camouflage isn't an amazing talent but it really helps when trying to get away when you vanish or when trying to find another rogue at the beginning of the match.
The Glyphs I use are Evasion, Vigor, Rupture.
I also use Distract glyph ( minor) in place of the sprint one that allows you to run on water. Distract is quite underused. I use distract quite often against healers who are drinking to make them stand up, if they were heal drinking then they won't be able to sit back down either.
2)I think it may be with how I play, I use my cooldowns wisely and almost never use them for nothing. I also run with 20k+ hp unbuffed which probably helps. With a priest healer you have pretty good buffs on you to keep you alive as well.
For your ferocious bites, I've felt the power of a feral druid critting me for 10k ferocious bites. (before nerf) but with how I play in arena, I'm really aggresive on feral druids and warriors that the feral druid is forced in bear for almost the whole match, while the warrior is running around with a shield on in defensive.
I'm sure it's basically a given, but if you string your cooldowns back to back you can go for quite a while without needing heals, right before a stun fades dismantle, right after dismantle fades evasion, etc.
3) As Much as I would love to see other viable pvp spec, none of the others just seem to cut it. With how pvp is right now, you NEED preparation in your pvp spec. If you get preparation, you can't get any 51 point talents like killing spree. If they were wanting to give rogues more choices for pvp specs they'd have to do something with preparation to make it more available.
The biggest problem with combat pvp specs is you want atleast 23 points into subtlety and atleast 16 points into assassination. This only leaves you with a 32 points to spend into combat while still missing out on some of the good stuff in assassination and subtlety.
Blizzard would have to bump lethality and preparation up another tier to make combat more accessible, the only problem is this makes rogues even more powerful. Right now with the current mut/prep spec I feel rogues do where they should be in arena, the only thing I complain about is the rogue bugs that have been here forever, and things like 90% cloak of shadows. I think after 3.1 after the other classes get toned down, rogues will be better.
4)Hmm, Not quite sure I understand the question fully. Are you talking about for your combo point generator or just for damage?
With how I play against heavy armor classes I still use mutilate to build combo points, but if I find my deadly poison about to fade I will shiv it to refresh the debuff. Though according to my recount most of my damage does infact come from mutilate, A large portion comes from my rupture and deadly poison as well.
As for pooling energy I only really do that while I'm doing a little bit of kiting for my priest to gain mana, or while waiting to burst someone down.
For example, I'm on a deathknight with 5 combo point, 5 stacks of deadly poison, garrote, and full rupture on him. I'll pool my energy to wait for him to get low, then mutilate him below 35% hp, cold blood envenom him to finish him off.
Another example where I pool energy is when fighting another rogue, I'll get a full expose armor on him, get 5 more combo points, wait for high amounts of energy and attempt to gouge him, when I get a gouge off i'll kidney shot him before it fades and coldblood mutilate, mutilate, eviscerate. They usually never live that if they dont have a trinket or pain suppression.

Awesome. Thanks a lot for explaining.
I haven't been lucky enough to get a single Sinister Revenge to drop, and I've run Naxx every week since this dumb expansion came out. Wish I could have that many daggers for different teams/poisons etc.
Thanks for answering, I really appreciate it and will try out what you do.
Loudfiero Mar 23rd 2009 7:50AM
Thank you for going into more detail!
I want to get into arena play soon but am specced for maximum pve damage right now as Combat and I can do 2.1K unbuffed in PvE.
I hope 3.1 drops soon so I can duel-spec as Combat PvP to prove it can be done. Combat has some great talents for damage and survivability.
Nerves of Steel helps against those Pally stuns.
Blade Twisting removes the need for Cripling Poison.
Throwing Specialization is nice against casters.
I think getting melee next to their caster and using the following burst: Blade Flurry, Killing Spree, Adrenaline Rush followed by Fan Of Knives spamming with Deadly Poison and Wound Poison on would send their healer into a tail spin and knock quite a bit of health off both members... Throwing Specialization with that burst should easily shut down healing. It would be nice if it also shut down DK runic abilities too since that is supposed to be a form of magic...
Here is my current PvE spec.

I always enjoy these insights into the top arena teams but just wondered if there's been or will be a chat with any high-level resto shamans?
Khass Mar 23rd 2009 2:09PM
How do you deal with hunter/paladin? Even with a sap on either of them and burning down one, I can at most force a bubble, then I get a heavy CC chain. Frost trap kited, scatter'd if I get close, Deterrance when he's low or I get a disarm in, Wyvern if they're about to burst the priest. AlsoFreedom whenever I get a KS and then just wingclip me and run away. HoJ/Repentance from paladin is there as well, although they can be dispelled (if my priest still has mana).
Once I run out of cooldowns it's the end of the match.
We've tried turtling and killing the pet, but neither seems to work. Any ideas?
Lamures Mar 23rd 2009 4:47PM
Hunter/Healer teams always make us cringe, but we've found only one viable strategy to win against them, it seems to have the best chance to win.
Basically, you can't really play defensively, at all. You're priest is sort of like a ticking bomb, you've got about 1 minute since you engage combat before he's out of mana and you're both dead.
What do you do with you 1 minute of living? Zerg the shit out of the healer.
In a perfect scenario in our favor, I get a sap on the hunter, disarm on the trap ( to prevent kiting while hunter is cc and reduce dmg output from lock and load) and I instantly zerg the hunter. Don't blow all of your cooldowns yet.
This is where you want to prepare yourself for the kill while the hunter is sapped, get an expose armor on the healer but don't kidney shot.
In a perfect situation, your priest will be able to fear both the hunter and the healer ( due to healer trying to los) and this is where you give your priest tricks of the trade, you both need to nuke the shit out of the healer there.
Most likely the hunter will trinket, and try for a wyvern sting so watch your focus target and get ready to blind. Also, the healer may trinket so this is where you get that 5 point kidney shot on him and blow your cold blood (2 times if you have too)
If you do this, and you're able to sap, disarm, and open on the healer, you'll basically win every time. The only problem is flare is retarded, hunters with track hidden + goggles is retarded, and you can't disarm a trap if the hunter does night elf stealth ( unless you get close enuf to him to see him, which coincidentaly means he can usually see you)
You don't always need to get all this to win. In terms of priority what you want to make sure you get before you get unstealth is:
Sap on the hunter.
Disarm on the Trap.
Opener on the healer.
We've found this is the only strat we can consistantly rely on to beat hunter/healer teams.
Sometimes, like the most recent match we had against our most recent hunter/healer match you won't get any of that off, but still pull off a win. If the hunter doesn't play well, and try wingclipping you constantly or never wyrvern stings you, you can win.
