Ulduar items and why they look the same

It's a pretty tough argument, and players throughout the thread have weighed with their thoughts on the matter. This is an issue that has been apparent since the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, where many armor pieces have largely shared the same models. Take, for example, the Spaulders of the Giant Lords, a plate shoulder piece purchased from the Sons of Hodir at Revered reputation. It shares the same model as 22 other rare plate items, from drops to crafted pieces. That's a lot of similar-looking gear. This design direction ensures that players will find an easier time finding non-set pieces that match instead of looking like a clown. This was one of the criticisms hurled at the leveling items in The Burning Crusade, and Blizzard seems to avoided it in Wrath.
On the other hand, some players argue that Blizzard might have overdone it, with one poster diligently listing many items which share similar models. He laments the fact that he has had the same looking helm over half the time he was leveling up and for some time after hitting Level 80. As cool as the Death Knight armor looks coming out of the starting area, it was something of a surprise to find that the non-tier plate items in Naxxramas and Heroic dungeons shared the same model. If you took mostly non-tier plate epics at Level 80, you would look almost identical to a Death Knight coming out of the Eastern Plaguelands.
This time around, in Ulduar, there doesn't appear to be a non-tier "set" as many pieces (as data-mined by MMO Champion) appear to be recolored versions of Tier 8, which the original poster decries as "effectively draining every shred of fun and sense of accomplishment out of raiding as a whole." I'm not so sure about that, but melodrama aside, it prompts Blizzard Community Manager Crygil to respond, stating that it's a tough balancing act but by using this method Blizzard is able to "maintain a good solid well polished look."
To be fair, this isn't the first time they've done this. Many tier items in The Burning Crusade had recolored versions, allowing players to mix and match non-tier pieces with their sets. With some luck, it was possible to obtain a complete, yet differently colored Tier 5 look using various loose pieces. Unless most of the items revealed so far from Ulduar are mere placeholders, it looks like Blizzard has followed through with this design direction. Crygil admits as much, noting how Blizzard aimed to avoid mismatched gear, and that this is how they choose to address the problem "for the time being."
While I do think that the base models are quite sparse this time around, I'm quite certain that there would've been whining either way. I think Tier 8 is very well-designed, and the current itemization means players won't struggle too hard to maintain the same, cohesive look (color discrepancies notwithstanding). That's certainly a good thing. On the other hand, players can't put together a completely different look should they wish to. To a degree, the original poster has a point about how every other person in Dalaran looks the same.
Personally, I will appreciate the flexibility of being able to keep just two or four pieces of a tier set for the bonus yet be able to maintain a cohesive appearance throughout. Should Ulduar itemization make it to live in this state, I wouldn't be so worried. This is the first time any raid dungeon will contain completely visually cohesive pieces, it's an experiment I'm willing to participate in. Blizzard has been known to change item models through patches, anyway, so even though it's a remote possibility, it can still happen with non-set pieces.

the guy makes some valid points, and you can argue it either way.
but seeing that 90% of the robes that you get (post wotlk) are the same is extremely dissapointing. theres about 3 new models for the robes in wrath, with like 40 new robes...do the math :/

One of my least favourite things about TBC was in the end, mostly everyone ended up wearing the same stuff.
For ages i found the Frozen shadow weave set depressing because, everyone else seemed to be wearing it. COuldn't wait to upgrade those pieces.
Now we all look the same despite wearing different stuff. i really don't like it. I like how everything matches up but there could still be a LOT more variety.
I'm sure Blizz are using the resources elsewhere in whatever way they think is more sensible but personally i'm disapointed in the lack of variety in gear these days. So far i've not seen any difference between tier 8 and 8.5 like there is in 7 and 7.5. :(
Maybe they're trying to nerf us down to the druid's level so they don't have to do more cat skins... ;)

My solution would be slightly different shapes of things with the same overall color scheme. For example, the Tier shoulders could have extra ornamentation and glow on them, while the non tier ones are a little more stripped down. Same goes for some of the other pieces. So they sort of match overall, but look overall less epic? Or is that way, way harder for them? It doesn't seem like they ever actually do *modeling work* except for shoulders and helms, anyway, the rest is just textural work for premade models.

I feel it's def. lazy by blizz. First they said " every piece of gear can't look like it's made from ultra rare dragonscales ", now they said they want it to match. Ohh I know let's re-use a whole dungeon ( naxx ) and totally flake on professions ( for the most part ). Throw in the whole achievement thing ( instead of more content we get a system that makes you re-use current content ) and I can't see how this can not be considered laziness. Not that I dont love this game but thinking human beings have to be objective and see the forest for the trees... ohh by the way ( instance is full try again later rofl ). ( To all the blizz superfans that can see no wrong.. do the math:( 15$/month )x (millions of subscribers) = they have more than enough money for developement )

I'm really not a fan of this move.
FFS they are making a dancing studio, which is a totally useless gimmick.
They should invest and effort that goes into developing this into developing a system that let's us color our armor.
We have to look at our character pretty much all the time so I think that would be far more important than being able to develop some dances we use like once a day....
If we could change the colors on our armor they could develop tons of different looking armor and by being able to color those pieces we could keep a somewhat coherent look.
Especially, why not, at least develop, a non-Tier-armor dungeon/drop set? Why use the Tier-8-looks?
The Tier-Set is supposed to be something special, something to look forward to, something that has a very special, unique look for each class.
Now everyone will run around with pieces of all relevant Tier-Sets, wohoo, finally obtaining all those five pieces will really feel.... dissappointing?
Good thing Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic are on the horizon, I'm looking forward to quitting WoW as soon as one of those hits the shelves.
It's still fun to play, although for me it's easily 50% just because of the people I play with, but more and more things annoy me about the game and I guess sooner rather than later the things I dislike will outweigh the things I like.

Everyone complained that in TBC the gear made us look like Clowns.
Well Blizz changed that...now we just look like Clones.
Seriously, as a Plate Wearer, I dig the TWO Armor models available that are non tier:
- the Vyrkul spikey look
- the DK starter gear look
Obsidian Greathelm..iLV 226 drops of H Sarth +2D and BiS for all plate wearers looks just like something everyone who rolls a DK gets as they level up.
Epic................
...not

Once again, I think that tier pieces and other high level items should be give options to be able to be colored / dyed.
I want to be able to dye my cloak. I want to be able to dye my armor so that it matches.
Blizz needs to implement this option ASAP.
Angus Mar 22nd 2009 5:42PM
There is a middle ground.
Make an off-set that has a specific and unique look in each category or armor. The set will look nice by itself and will not be too ugly when mixed with the tier stuff.
Now have the armor have a tag that allows the model to be altered. Visit your local barber. These pieces can then be changed to match the tier piece you use. They only have 2 settings, the generic set and the tier matching set.
Now, people that would like to not look like a freaking death knight because their Ret Paladin picked up DPS gear and all of it is DK reskins will look different. The armor will be a distinctive set and people will know it to be from that raid and if you want to look a little more matched when decked in tier armor, you can change it to be like the tier set. If it is in the same slot as a tier piece, it will be an different color to make it easy to distinguish.
Cost to do this should be very similar to a hair cut and should never go up.
There, now they only have to make a few extra models, people don't look like clowns unless they want to, and everyone gets a little bit happier.
Roscoe Mar 22nd 2009 5:45PM
Personally what I would love to see happen is for Blizz to introduce the dye kits like they had in Hellgate London - one of the few things that game got absolutely right. It allowed you to keep a cohesive look to your character no matter what kind of random gear you wound up with.
Flamespawn Mar 22nd 2009 5:57PM
"This design direction ensures that players will find an easier time finding non-set pieces that match instead of looking like a clown. This was one of the criticisms hurled at the leveling items in The Burning Crusade, and Blizzard seems to avoided it in Wrath."
Yeah.. When levelling. Not when raiding end game.
"hai guise look at my t8 lol!"
"Thats not t8.... thats all random raid gear that looks like t8..."
"LULWUT? GOTCHA! seriuzly tho... I can haz t8 liek rite nao plz. I jst turnd 80?"
Jimsonweed Mar 22nd 2009 5:56PM
The author missed the root of the problem - it will be possible for (say) a druid to 'wear' rogue T8 with Ulduar gear since there are leather dps shoulders that use Rogue T8 models that cat druids can obtain.
Similarly any cloth classes can put together what is essentially mage and priest T8 (even the same color) with certain non-tier loots. I haven't see the warlock helm reused yet but I'm sure it is so my mage may end up 'wearing' lock T8.
This is silly and pure laziness on Blizzards behalf.
All this is solved if they just added an appearance tab to the game.

If we could color our gear people everywhere would know me from a distance. They would all say, "There goes bubbles, the mighty pink paladin. What a great main tank he was in our raid last night." ... Sadly I know that as soon as I reached said level of fame, some idiot would come along and spoil it.
Setting: Bubbles, the mighty pink BE paladin sitting outside the bank in Org. In walks Bubblez the not so mighty pink BE paladin.
"oh no...." Bubblez says.
Bubblez Logsout
Raid leader contacts Bubbles, "sorry man, we went with another tank, heard you went crazy and refused to tank KT from your last raid, and i cant risk that."
Bubbles commits suicide by jumping off of dalaran.
Dhora Mar 23rd 2009 11:42AM
what would have been smart would have been separate the hybrid healing/dps/tank gear by color with one color left for offsets
they make 4 set color models. Use them.
Eisengel Mar 22nd 2009 6:05PM
Actually I really liked a lot of the BC sets. The PvP sets, at least for Priests, looked @!@$!@ awesome at basically every tier, except for Brutal. The Battlegear rep-PvP sets also looked quite nice. They were a recolor and reworking of other sets, but they still looked quite cohesive and good on their own. The Spellfire and Frostweave gear also looked quite nice.
Personally I absolutely abhor the helm models in Wrath. I have no idea who dreamed them up... but holy crap the cloth helms models suck so hard that instead of using my vacuum to clean I just boot up WoW, log on to my priest, check 'display helm' and wave my laptop over the floor.
The new crafted/tier models are... okay... but the half-top effect doesn't quite seem to work. For some reason my female Spriest is wearing what amounts to a halter top and a skirt... in the frozen lands full of hip-deep snow in Northrend... while she was happy to run around in a full-sleeve robe and hood in the burning wastes of Outland. ...? It also looks very silly while wearing a rep tabard.
I'd trade my Titansteel Guardian for a tier set that looks like the old BC Gladiator, Vengeful Gladiator, Merciless Gladiator, Satin Battlegear, or Frozen Shadoweave sets. Now to be honest so far T7 looks pretty nice, but I'm really hoping there is a content patch on 3.1 launch to update the T8 sets.
Rey Mar 22nd 2009 6:28PM
Who cares what your gear looks like? I'm more concerned with the stats than whether I look pretty. As an Elemental Shaman, I'm much more annoyed at all the MP5 on the mail gear. Cloth and Leather is even worse now than ever before with all that spirit.
Elgrend Mar 22nd 2009 7:24PM
If that's the case why don't you play Zork?
I don't mind if leveling gear is boring or even mismatched a bit; you'll replace it soon enough. I think Blizzard has done a good job with the color palate in Wrath, but the variety is severely lacking. As a casual, I don't expect to see much in the way of T8, but I do expect to see people walking around in T8 to look cool. I should be impressed. If I have to do inspect your armor to see what you've accomplished, Blizz is doing something wrong.
Leveling gear - who cares.
Mid-tier - Hey, that's nice!
Top-tier - Whoa, that's cool!
Hoggersbud Mar 22nd 2009 6:49PM
I've never understood the people who freak out about their gear's appearance. Oh sure, the Outland gear was often comic. I was just talking with some folks the other day about how they were wearing their skank set.
But y'know, that was amusing, not offensive. Not enough to make me rage again Blizzard's art department like I see some people.
And while I don't know that I'd oppose dyeing gear, I have noticed that the games with it tend to be limited in the models, as the coloring option takes away some of the ability of the art department to apply textures.
Maybe that's just their production values though.
Oh well, I still enjoy my helm from Gnomer. I think it's hilarious.
Jamie Mar 22nd 2009 6:55PM
Indeed, but the thing is... I'm a paladin... I want to look like a paladin, I want to feel like a paladin, I look... like a Death Knight or a warrior... looking back on the old sets of armor of WoW Vanilla they were so beautifully done, but this stuff is just shocking.
Munky Mar 22nd 2009 6:55PM
Problem is, you could keep the color schemes somewhat homogenous but make different models for most items. That way you could have a few coordinating colors on many different models which would make for quite a bit more originality than what is present. However, I feel that Actilizzard got a bit lazy...no that's wrong...a bit stingy when it came to the design of the armor. I mean, people didn't want to look like clowns and have all this mix-match armor (which I personally didn't mind as it made everyone look different). So, they made everything look alike and make the excuse that they changed the way things were because of complaints but someone is going to argue anyway. So, why pay a team to design more than a couple of variations and get it out to meet this goal? Hire a few designers and it could have been worked out. But why, when this way is cheaper and less effort and still meets the design goals? Lazyness and greed I tell you!
Chamual Mar 22nd 2009 7:50PM
The main problem for me is that tier items are supposed to look special and abit different from normal items. You should be able to look at a player and go 'wow, full tierX!!' rather than just have them blend in with everything else.
