Breakfast Topic: The titles of Patch 3.1

Of course, there are more titles that are coming with the next content patch, and yesterday it was revealed that the titles for the Ulduar versions of Undying and Immortal were going to be Champion of Ulduar and Conqueror of Ulduar respectively. Is it just me or does Champion/Conqueror of Ulduar not have the same 'oomph' as being Immortal or Undying? First of all, Champion and Conqueror are both existing Horde PvP titles, which lessens the impact. Secondly, the cool factor of 'the Immortal' and 'the Undying' are just off the chain as well as being perfectly appropriate for the Achievement.
There are also the Celestial Defender and Death's Demise titles for realm first Algalon and Yogg-Saron kills in their hardest modes. I think those are much cooler, but are about on par with, uh, Magic Seeker. Sometimes, titles just don't roll of the tongue very nicely. We usually ask for your opinion on these, and we're doing the same today for Patch 3.1's batch of titles. In fact, we're putting up a poll to get your take on all the titles of Patch 3.1. Click on a radio button to kick off your day!

if wow keeps adding titles like crazy, they will lose their luster soon.
apoxic Mar 24th 2009 8:54AM
They overdid it a long time ago..

they became lackluster a LOOOONG time ago
everyone and their little 12 year old sister is "the immortal" or "champion of the frozen wastes" nowadays.
I liked it better when they were actually difficult to attain.

I like the variety of titles, the harder ones are still harder to get, and the easier ones are easier to get, and there is a nice set of options to choose from. I don't see some people having a title for, say, questing, having a negative impact on someone with a title for raiding, or for pvp.
Now, if you feel that titles should only go to people skill, well that's just good for a laugh. So it really just comes down to time and opportunity.

I disagree. I believe there need to be more titles. I'd love to see silly titles like "Bear Killer" or "of the Bells". Titles shouldn't be an exclusive club that only 10% of people can get. They should be available to everyone. Let the hard ones be appreciated, but I'd love to see the title, "Merchant" in front of my banker. ;)

As long they aren't titles that end up like the "Love Fool", I think we'll be alright...
ROB13 Mar 24th 2009 8:06AM
Insane in the Membrane, gonna be hell to do it but I want it so bad....only bad thing is Darkmoon Fair to Exalted, I didn't even know that was possible!
"Nictorak the Insane" lol
Dementron Mar 24th 2009 8:07AM
Nah, it's all about "the Insane"
FifthDream Mar 24th 2009 8:06AM
Well as long as people know what they mean, titles are titles. Regardless of how "cool" they are, they still convey that we accomplished something.

The more titles the merrier, imo... tho youre right, the champion and conqueror aren't quite as fun as the immortal and undying.
But whatever happens, i dont see myself giving up my guardian of cenarius... nothings more appropriate for my newly-main druid :)
Jorges Mar 24th 2009 9:32AM
/agree
I've never give up my Guardian of Cenarius for any title. It's the best suited title for a Druid.

the only new titles that blizz is bringing out that i see attainable for myself is the city titles. although i am very happy with my argent champion and ambassador titles. i definitly agree that the champion/conqueror of ulduar just isnt as cool as immortal or undying.
Shinn Mar 24th 2009 8:25AM
I don' t know if that was Infected Mushroom reference but i voted anyway :)
On topic: I'd have to say that even in BC titles were pretty awesomesauce compared to how things stand now. You can't turn around without having a title flash across the screen in any major city.
Don't get me wrong here, it definitely not a bad thing to have titles for all and sundry, no siree! But at least make them cool!
Cool like videos of animals done with a wide angle lens... with hats.

Not a fan of Conqueror of Ulduar because of the existence of the Conqueror of Naxxramas title (awarded for the realm first clear of Naxx). In my mind, the similarity seems to devalue the Naxx title -- which obviously is a very rare title -- since I imagine that much of the raiding population will be able to achieve the Conqueror of Ulduar title.

I have all names in my interface turned off. So really, it makes no difference to me. Although I do agree, the whole titles thing has lost it's shine.

On the topic of titles, I was checking out WoWiki and there title page and found the following:
Sergeant Sergeant Rare cloak; 10% discount from faction NPCs
This is the Old PvP title of Sergeant and it's benefits and it got me thinking. Does anyone know if players who achieved this rank back in the day still see the 10% discount from faction vendors or was this removed when the PvP title system went bye bye?
Raaj Mar 24th 2009 9:39AM
It's all baked into the reputation system now. You gain a 5% discount for each reputation "tier" that you unlock. It starts at 5% at friendly and goes up to 20% at exalted.
awwjwah Mar 24th 2009 12:02PM
I thought that reputation reduction was always present and the PvP title cost reduction was on top of the already gained rep bonus.
Unless you are saying that the rep bonuses were turned up to compensate for the 10% PvP rep bonus going bye bye but I could have sworn it was always a 5% discount by rep level.
Arashikou Mar 24th 2009 1:43PM
Nope. For the majority of the game's life, there's only been one rep discount level, 10% at honored. However, it was always a widespread misconception that there were gradated discounts are higher rep levels. I mean, it makes sense, right? And especially during the early years, it was hard to get higher than honored with the major cities, (and unless you wanted their mounts, little reason to do so) so many people didn't have a chance to find out first-hand.
I think this has been one of the most enduring misconceptions about WoW, right up there with "green quests give less XP, and red quests give more." It wouldn't surprise me to know that more people believed there were different discounts at each rep level than not. Of course, now Blizz has changed the game, and that IS how things are, so no more room for error.
But until the old honor system went away, there were only two discounts: 10% for honored with the vendor's faction and 10% for PvP rank. After that, there was only the rep discount until patch 2.3 changed the system to the "discount that scales with rep level from 5 to 20%" that we see today:

As far as I know, Algalon doesn't HAVE a hard mode, he's ALWAYS hard. Plus it's already known that it's necessary to beat every Ulduar boss on hard mode (that has one at least) in order to access him (including Yogg-Saron), so to say that the title requires you to be YS and Algalon on hard mode is somewhat inaccurate and redundant.
