Shifting Perspectives: Gearing your Cat Druid at 80, part 2 cont'd
FEET
Best Overall: There isn't a clear winner. The three Heroic drops are all good or you could just pick up the Jormscale Footpads off the AH, enchant them and move on to procuring gear for other slots.
Best Drop: Three-way tie more or less. In order of dps increase, with the best first:
Runner Up: Jormscale Footpads are crafted and can be found on the Auction House pretty cheap.
Enchanting: Superior Agility will do the trick.
FINGER
Best Overall: Hemorrhaging Circle and Band of the Kirin Tor. Gal'darah in Heroic Gun'drak drops the first (as well as the Gored-Hide Leggings.) As for the band, yes it costs 8500g, but it's a damn fine ring if you have the cash, plus free port to Dalaran so you can set your Hearthstone elsewhere. If that's too rich for your blood, there are more options below, though some of the Auction House options are still pricey.
Best Drop: Bjarngrim Family Signet. Drops from General Gjarngrim in Normal Halls of Lightning. Solid ring choice if you don't want to shell out the gold for the Titanium Impact band. Also consider the Mobius Band from Chrono Lord Epoch in Heroic CoT: Stratholme.
Best Quest Reward: Here's three solid options, start with best dps boost first:
TRINKETS
Best Overall: Darkmoon Card: Greatness. Far and away, the best trinket in the game, bar none (as of 3.0.9.) Requires you to combine 8 different pages into the Deck. Cards are dropped randomly throughout the world. Also, Inscriptionists can make the cargs. Look on the Auction House for the pages (search for "nobles")...for about 2,000g each. Sometimes you can buy the entire Deck (search for "nobles deck") for 15k-20kg. Or consider leveling in Inscription, try your hand at random card creation and hope for the best.
Best Drop: Here's a number of options with the first being an excellent choice if you can get it to drop:
2D drop, Fury of the Five Flights. Bonus: the special ability is passive and doesn't have to be activated.
Also, if you are an Alchemist, the Mighty Alchemist's Stone will do you fine. Same with the Figurine - Emerald Boar for Jewlerycrafters, but don't worry about having to summon the boar, the extra dps it provides is not significant.
Finally, check the Auction House for Tears of Bitter Anguish or try to farm it off of Nascent Val'kyr in Storm Peaks. But be warned, the drop rate is very, very low.

There's really only three pre-Naxx choices here:

Best Drop: Three-way tie more or less. In order of dps increase, with the best first:
- Slag Footguards - drops from Volkhan in Heroic Halls of Lightning (good gloves also drop from the next boss in the instance, Ionar)
- Gorloc Muddy Footwraps - drops from Eck the Ferocious in Heroic Gundrak (decent legs drop from the boss before Eck as well)
- Boots of the Whirling Mist - drops from Sjonnir the Ironshpaer in Heroic Halls of Stone

Best Quest Reward: Here's three solid options, start with best dps boost first:
- Signet of Bridenbrad - Reward from long, but entertaining Icecrown quest line starting with A Tale of Valor and ending with Light Within The Darkness
- Jagged Ice Band - Reward from another long, but lore-tastic quest line, this time in Storm Peaks starting with On Brann's Trail and ending with The Brothers Bronzebeard for Alliance. For Horde side, it starts with The Missing Bronzebeard and ends with Forging the Keystone.
- Frozen Mood Ring - The first reward from the extensive Sons of Hodir faction chain
- Signet of Edward the Odd - drops in Naxx, but is often seen on the AH in the 3kg range (on my server).
- Stained-Glass Shard Ring - Zone drop in Ahn'kahet
- Titanium Impact Band - crafted, runs about 1500g on my server
- Ring of Scarlet Shadows - This can run you around 800g depending on your server. There are many better rings you can pick up, but this are good starters if you have the money.

- Meteorite Whetstone - Drops from King Ymiron in Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle (don't forget the Ravenous Leggings of the Furbolg also drop from Gortok Palehoof in the same zone)
- Incisor Fragment - Drops from King Dred in Heroic Drak'Tharon Keep.
- Forge Ember - Drops from Sjonnir in Heroic Halls of Stone (he also drops good boots.)
- Crusader's Locket - Reward from Defending the Vanguard quest in Icecrown
- Fezzik's Pocketwatch - Reward from The Last Line of Defense quest in Icecrown
- Scarab of Isanoth - Reward from Horde-only quest Pride of the Horde in Dragonblight
- Rune of Finite Variation - Reward from Mystery of the Infinite, Redux quest in Dragonblight
- Chuchu's Tiny Box of Horrors - Reward from The Shadow Vault quest (A/H) in Icecrown
- First Mate's Pocketwatch - Reward from The Jig Is Up quest in Howlign Fjord
Also, if you are an Alchemist, the Mighty Alchemist's Stone will do you fine. Same with the Figurine - Emerald Boar for Jewlerycrafters, but don't worry about having to summon the boar, the extra dps it provides is not significant.

IDOLS
There's really only three pre-Naxx choices here:
- Idol of the Wastes - Reward from low 70s Dragonblight quest (A/H.) The bonus to Swipe doesn't affect Cat Swipe, only Bear Swipe.
- Idol of the Ravenous Beasts - This costs 15 Emblems of Heroism and should be your first Emblem purchase. You can buy this in 2-3 nights of running Heroic Dailies.
- Idol of the Plainstalker - Easy level 69 quest out of Borean Tundra (A/H)

The Idol of Terror is still decent... esp. if you're a Shred-less cat (though we might be extinct in 3.1).
Plus you can farm badges of justice solo now.
The best way to gear for cat, though, is to be resto. As I was reading in another WI article, there's a lot more healing gear : healers than DPS gear : DPS... so you can gear up as a healer pretty quickly, get your 25-man raid spot, and start rolling off-spec on your feral set.
Although, I tried that, and my guild ended up not letting me spec back to feral because I was so good at healing! Ironic, and yet pleasing :p
FireStar Mar 25th 2009 9:47AM
Yeah that's a good way to get gear...and never be able to use it. I did the same thing as a resto shaman for ele gear. My ele spec hasn't seen the light of day for months. Perhaps that's cause we're short healers and the 2 others we have are also very geared. We're 3 healing H naxx atm.
Elzreth Mar 25th 2009 2:27PM
I went resto at 77 to burn through instances for quick leveling to 80 and have not been able to return to my feral roots since. In one partial run of Naxx 10 as a healer I was able to acquire 4 pieces for my feral off set and it includes the Staff of the Plaguehound. I was at the Druid trainer last night to switch back to feral when I saw a request for a healer for Naxx 10 and went to that instead of switching back to feral. I feel that I won't know how to DPS anymore if I never get to do it.... :(. Anyway, It was my first full clear of Naxx 10 and that is good. But I still want to shred faces. Patiently waiting for dual-specs in 3.1. ~Elz

Lol it's kinda hard to shred faces when you need to use it from behind...

I noticed you put that darkmoon card nobles can be put together from mob drops. This is not the case unless something is changing on the PTR, for now only scribes can make northrend cards.
Terylgoth Mar 25th 2009 12:44AM
Additionally, the Darkmoon Card: Greatness (+90 Str) is an outstanding trinket due to the AP conversion in cat form. While the Agil one is nice, it simply does not hold up with the current conversion rate for strength.
komamura Mar 25th 2009 1:27AM
After 3.1 the Agi will once again be a Cats best stat again, so you be better off with Agi for the long run
Stealthfire Mar 25th 2009 3:37PM
In addition the agil version is outstanding for tanking, so if you ever decide to go bear or are asked to offtank a few pulls (not unheard of for a cat druid), you'll get more use out of the agility.
Also the price on the nobles deck varies pretty widely, and has been steadily decreasing since launch. I've seen it as low as 8kg on Thunderlord US. I'm willing to bet once Ulduar comes out and it becomes a little less special, the price will go down even more.
Also some of these choices are a little...odd. Mind Expanding Leggings over Gored Hide? And what's Forge Ember doing there?
Nothlit Mar 25th 2009 1:40AM
Wouldn't the Forge Ember be better suited to caster types, considering the nice boost to spell power, not attack power, that it provides? I know my boomkin was eyeing it before he found better.
Nizari Mar 25th 2009 2:40AM
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37573 is also a pretty easy-to-get idol pre-naxx, and it's useful both for cat and bear form
DragonFireKai Mar 25th 2009 3:10AM
I'd just like to point out that the fury of the five flights doesn't require any drakes to be up.
Ruana Mar 25th 2009 8:31AM
This. I got it without any drakes up. We're just now starting 1 drake up, and I've had Fury for a while.
Rahl Mar 25th 2009 6:50AM
You missed off
Boots of the Neverending Path from Argent Crusade rep! Huge Hit rating on those should be a major upgrade to anything that you recommended in your article.
Taeraresh Mar 25th 2009 8:11AM
One thing you missed off the top of my head is the gilt-edged leather gauntlets from Ymiron in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle. Huge huge boost to hit, and good stat gains besides that.
Good article, though. It's nice to see that my gear choices weren't too sub-optimal when I was at this point in the game.
Sierro Mar 25th 2009 8:07AM
I have to disagree with the ordering of some of these choices. Gored Hide leggings are much better than the mind expanding ones from Kirin Tor, and the Mobius Band is better than the signet.
Also the Signet of Edward the Odd is a world drop, not a Naxx drop.
nessephanie Jun 1st 2009 2:49AM
^ This. I just stupidly passed on the Gore Hide Legguards because I had the mind expanding leggings and didn't think, at this point, I was looking for legs. I passed without even looking. (I'm not blaming the guide, it was my own stupid fault) but they are WAY better, I'm very confused as to why they're listed as they are. (even socketed the AP of the ME doesn't compare to the Gore Hide, and Hit is better than expertise at this point in leveling...)
Arslin Mar 25th 2009 2:31PM
I noticed that your gear list does not stress hit at all. Until you are hit capped, hit is the most important stat for your gear.
arrethyn Mar 26th 2009 3:26AM
Id agree, being hit capped ought to be one of your first goals (if not the first) but given that I'm much more likely to heal/tank and I don't yet have a proper dps set I've found that some hit food(40 hit) and elixir or accuracy(45 hit) can make up quite a bit of hit deficiency so if your not quite capped yet, one of the two, or both, is probably something worth looking into.

Actually, Signet of edward the odd droped for my group right before the last boss on Heroic UP. It was droped on a trash mob to make things even stranger. We rolled for it , but i lost the roll. But the other feral druid decided to give it to me , maybe because she didnt need it as much as i did, she was fully epiced. Or maybe because she was just so nice. T_T. I still got the ring on, its very nice.
