Wowhead goes to War(hammer)

We've received numerous tips about this, and I'm sure the folks over there would be touched to know that you all care so much. It's likely that the ad came down through their parent company zam.com – so don't read too much into it.
But it is rather funny seeing a large Warhammer ad on a WoW site. These ads have also been known to exist on WoWWiki. They too likely have their ads chosen by their parent company Wikia, just like AOL does for WoW Insider.
So enjoy the Warhammer ads on Wowhead for the time being. You can learn more about Warhammer over at our sister site Massively.

Old!
Seriously though, I wonder how much they had to pay WoWhead for that, Warhammer must be pretty desperate.
Angry Joe Mar 24th 2009 7:12PM
Actually, Blizzard made the same thing with the warhammer wiki on the launch of WotLK. Business as usual.
Squint Mar 24th 2009 7:29PM
Guess not enough people are playing party poker!
kabshiel Mar 25th 2009 1:10AM
WoWWiki has had that ad up for a while now too.
Hiddenmonkey Mar 24th 2009 7:07PM
Or maybe Warhammer is targeting the WoW playerbase? It seems to make a lot of sense to me
InsaneAssault Mar 24th 2009 7:10PM
They've been trying to target the wow playerbase all this time. They succeeded for a little while... then Wrath came out.

And now WotLK has been out for a while and many people are getting bored waiting for 3.1. I can see this being a good time to try and hook WoW players. Especially with how badly they've messed up PvP in WoW.

Think about it.
Reports say that arena attendance is down 65%
WAR has "THE KILLER PVP EXPERIENCE" in it's wowhead, wowinterface, and wowwiki advertisements.
coincidence?
Varne Mar 24th 2009 7:08PM
WoWWiki has had a full-page WAR ad on it for ages now.
InsaneAssault Mar 24th 2009 7:09PM
There is also a similar ad on wowwiki. There is also an additional banner on the page for WAR with the tagline "Bored to death of PVE?"
Heh good stuff.

Hah, that's pretty good actually.
jim carey Mar 24th 2009 8:05PM
actually its steadily growing. it has a great community and theyre constantly adding content, mostly for free so far. theyre filling in a lot of the blanks that WoW is missing, but they do still have a while to go to be able to truly compete with blizz. far from a dead game walking imo.
jim carey Mar 24th 2009 8:06PM
oops, meant to reply to rugus lol.
Murgrum Mar 25th 2009 6:48AM
"Bored to death" is exactly why I recently switched to WAR, it's nice to play something and have new classes to play, new content to explorer and to actually play a different game after almost 5 years.
Rugus Mar 24th 2009 7:10PM
Warhammer is a dead game walking.

Usually, I hate MMOs. Not because of any reason in perticular, it's just that when I play, I get bored. I have no motivation to continue and move forward, I have no aspirations as to learning more about the world and it's history. The gameplay is usually quite dull and not very entertaining. WoW is different. Same exact gameplay, but I have an obsession with the story, so it drives me forward to play and experience different places and talk and fight different people.
So a couple weeks ago I tried the WAR trial... it was actually quite entertaining. Not as much as WoW, but the fact that I was playing it without any prior knowledge of the story. Not so compelling that I would pay for it, but it was interesting that I found it fun and amusing, compared to every other MMO I've played.

This is of course the problem for the MMO if the content is *almost* good enough to pay for...
Of course I don't like PvP. My first account was PvP. I don't know if high level alliance ganked the horde, but they did gank us as lowbies. A game devoted to PvP is out for me.
I guess if enough people think like me, this is why a PvP based game is doomed to failure
Keyra Mar 24th 2009 8:38PM
@ Amaxe - on rare occasion, I like a little PvP. But ONLY on rare occasion. For me, it's about playing the game by questing, leveling, interacting, etc. I'm like you - my first server was a PvP server. I was fine until I reached level 20-ish and then found myself being ganked by level 60s (this was just when TBC came out) just because they knew that they could one-shot this lowbie. The corpse-camping while I was just trying to quest was annoying, to say the least. I almost quit the game entirely until I decided to roll a new toon on a different server that wasn't PvP. I still have that first toon, but she's on an RP server now (an RP server that doesn't RP...it may as well be a PvE server) and I'm happy there :-)
There are a lot of free-to-play MMOs out there that I've noticed focus almost exclusively on PvP. I wonder how many players they actually have? I'm guessing not many, or at least not many who continue playing beyond a short time.
Elry Mar 24th 2009 10:21PM
@Amaxe - Ganking isn't as easy in WAR as it is in WoW because if you go into a zone below your own "tier" and you're flagged for PvP you get turned into a chicken with virtually no stats, and can be stamped on by all the lowbies in the area!
Also, twinking is out, which I am glad of. You gain XP from the battleground equivalents in WAR, so you can't remain at the top end of your level tier and permanently rule the roost.
I'd say the balancing of the PvP and PvE content actually works very well IMO. There are less convoluted mechanics underlying the PvP and PvE sides of the game. Not that they're not complicated, but they were designed and balanced from the inception of the game, unlike resilience which was added in to try and solve PvP issues but has more recently caused issues of its own in Wrath.
Another thing I love about PvP in WAR is that everyone gets "normalised" in the battlegrounds. I've gone into a new tier of battlegrounds at the lowest level for it, and had my stats boosted up to the midpoint of the tier. While this doesn't make me as powerful as those who are at the top end in terms of level and gear, it does give me a fighting chance, and tactics can actually come into play.
Lastly, WoW has taken the ability to join battlegrounds from anywhere in game from WAR. A fresh stance on PvP game mechanics from a different team of developers on another game is slowly filtering ideas into WoW's PvP, which can only be a good thing.
I really can't fault the game, even on its PvE content, the only problem I have is that I've read a lot of the Warhammer novels, and played the RP game, so I can get easily bored of too much of the same thing, storylines etc, though I tend to stick to playing PvP in WAR and PvE in WoW. WoW videogame is my only source of Warcraft, so I can continue to play through a lot of PvE content more regularly without getting tired of it as quickly.

If you want Warhammer's Story, there's plenty of books and other material to learn it from...of course, unless you like blowing tons of cash on little overpriced bits of metal and plastic, you probably won't get into the tabletop game.
