WoW Rookie: A character by any other name would be so weak
New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW's newest players to the resources they need to get acclimated. Send us a note to suggest a WoW Rookie topic.Your character's name is literally the essence of your World of Warcraft experience. Think about it: from the way you think of your character (a roleplaying personality, a tool for gaming achievements, an expression of yourself) to the way others see you, your name plays a defining role.
While Blizzard indulges in the occasional sly riff on pop culture and even pays homage to the WoW community when naming NPCs (non-player characters) and items, you may find yourself dismayed by the results after attempting to do the same with your own characters. The way we see it, character names are like tattoos – and what seemed like a great idea at 1 a.m. on a Saturday night might not smell so fresh in the harsh light of day.
Naming characters can seem overwhelming to a new player, especially if you're creating a character on an established server where many popular name combinations have already been claimed. Let's cover the basics of finding an appealing name that won't wear thin or break any rules.

Highly inappropriate Characters with names involving these issues will be assigned a randomly generated name and be temporarily suspended from the game.
- Racial/ethnic/national
- Extreme sexuality/violence
- Sexual orientation
- Obscene/vulgar
- Harassing or defamatory
- Blizzard employees
- Inappropriate
- Advertising
- Trademarks
- Pure gibberish
- "Leet" or "dudespeak"
- Titles (does not apply to guild, Arena team or pet names)
- Real-world references
- Partial or complete sentences (does not apply to guild or Arena team names)
- belong to or impersonate another person
- incorporate vulgar language or are offensive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable
- belong to a popular culture figure, celebrity, or media personality
- contain or are substantially similar to a trademark or service mark
- belonging to any religious figure or deity
- are taken from Blizzard's Warcraft products
- are related to drugs, sex, alcohol, or criminal activity
- are comprised of partial or complete sentence (e.g., "Inyourface", "Welovebeef", etc)
- refer to pop culture icons or personas (e.g. " "Britneyspears", "Austinpowers", "Batman")
Sez who?
Many players complain that while they themselves follow naming policies, other players continually flout them. "Does Blizzard really care?" they ask. Of course they do! "It's got nothing to do with 'not caring,'" notes WoW Insider staffer Michael Sacco, formerly known as Blizzard "Blue" community manager Belfaire. "It's just that most policies aren't proactive. With a player base as large as WoW's, it's almost impossible to be proactive with policy enforcement."
You can report inappropriate names in game through the Help system, but it's not very convenient. There are add-ons that will make the task more convenient, if you find inappropriate names a persistent problem on your server.

Your mother was right: first impressions count. Joke names rarely make a good impression on anyone around you. When you choose an inappropriate character name, you set your reputation and respect levels at a deficit before you even log in. PvP players will be more likely to gank you, players on your own faction will be more inclined to diss you, and you'll be at a disadvantage interacting with other players in trades, groups and raids.
Avoid using special or foreign characters (on U.S. servers) in your name. Blizzard does not recommend (and in some cases, does not allow) their use. Besides, players who don't know the keystrokes required to create those characters won't be able to /whisper you, put you on their Friends lists or invite you to groups.
Another consideration is whether or not the name you choose has lasting value. Will you still want this name floating over your head in six months? A year? Longer? Maybe that silly joke won't seem so funny anymore, or maybe the girlfriend you've named your 'toon for will be long gone.
Whatever you choose and why, remember that Blizzard's GM staff will only change names that violate its naming policy. If you change your mind about your name but it doesn't violate any rules, you'll have to use the new paid name change service.

A lot of people pick names thats have no thought at all.
Brimoonfang Mar 26th 2009 8:12AM
In my experience, the worst offenders here are the flood
of freshly minted Death Knights in Wrath.
The various mispellings of "Arthas", the hordes of "DK---",
etc.
There is actually someone in my guild named
"Deathknight". I'm so ashamed.

How can you forget the 6000000 very "original" people who roll taurens with "milk", "moo" or "beef" in their names? I get them all very confused.
But then again when I was rolling my toon, I named them after a fictional bear, but decided at the last minute that I didn't really want to be a cow, or a druid.

I wish Blizzard would enforce their naming rules. Unless someone complains, they don't get involved, and I have seen some terrible names out there. Some are funny, some are stupid, some I won't repeat (and I've reported).
Now I understand that it's hard to come up with a name that one out of the other 11 million people haven't already chosen, but when it starts to just become a random spilling of characters, what's the point?
Perhaps Blizz needs to re-vamp the naming feature to allow for last names - that might solve a lot of the problem, I think...but then they would also need to enforce their own rules. Then, maybe we wouldn't have Thisizmyname, Xxroxxorxx and Chzbrgrz running around in an RP server.
Keyra Mar 25th 2009 6:44PM
What's funny is that they take action when none needs to be taken. I had named my guild, "Girls Behaving Badly" and never thought anything about it except that I thought it was clever and cute for an all-female guild.
Someone reported it for "sexual connotation"...um...wtf?
Meanwhile, there is a guild out there called "STDs are BoP" (which I thought was hilarious) but it's NOT reported for sexual innuendo?
Weird...whatever...
Kakistocracy Mar 25th 2009 6:49PM
""STDs are BoP"" isn't really innuendo, nor is it really accurate, I mean, the T stands for transmitted. Really, BoP indicates that something cannot be given to someone else, but can be gotten rid of on a whim, so STDs are the opposite of bop, yet somehow that guild is on most servers.
JDM Mar 25th 2009 7:09PM
I think a lot of it depends on the GM who is assigned the task of saying 'OK' or 'no way' to the naming reports. Did you, yourself, report the STD guild name? I've also heard that it takes many reports for GMs to look into names. While SOME of the names I report, I get an e-mail with the GM decision (or mocked indecision) inside of it, a good half of the reports, there is no e-mail at all.
Several times, I've reported offensive names, only to still see the same players with the names years later.
RP realms are even worse. While their guidelines are supposed to be stricter, Blizzard still doesn't care about some of the names when you report them. It's aggravating to say the least.
When names are changed, I get the e-mail: "We were able to investigate the character that you have reported, and are taking the appropriate actions. Please note, that due to privacy considerations we will not be able to tell you the results of our investigation."
Amusingly, when they are NOT changed, I get: "Recently, you contacted us in regards to a particular character name or names that you felt violated our posted naming policy. (...) Due to the nature of the name(s) reported, the decision has been made not to change it."
Keyra Mar 25th 2009 7:21PM
@JDM - that was on a server that I'm no longer on, and I didn't report it because I thought it was amusing. Still, considering the nature of the name itself, I found it rather ironic that "Girls Behaving Badly" was reported but something like "STDs are BoP" is fine. Maybe it wouldn't be fine on my current server, I don't know, but I have seen a few that caused me to wonder. I didn't report these because I saw no reason to - it wasn't vulgar nor, in my opinion, in violation of the naming rules...just a sort of double entendre kind of thing.
Then again, maybe my guild's name was reported by someone I /gkick-ed for being a total douche.

Girls behaving badly is the name of a TV show where women play comedic 'punk'd' / candid camera pranks. Its not sexual - but it is a trademark.
The tagline from the TV Show's website:
"Four fast-talking women, a hidden camera and an endless supply of unsuspecting participants provide all the necessary ingredients for laughout-loud comedy"
SINisterWyvern Mar 26th 2009 11:55AM
I would say about 1/3 of the names in the game violate the naming policy in some way. While most are minor they violate the naming policy regardless.
I accept that blizzard just doesn't care about this policy and might as well remove half of it.
Everything with a variation of Arthas is against the policy but they'll never be changed.
Even if blizzard is not going to be proactive about it, they can at least be responsive to names that are against the policy.
Dahebrewhama since it's a religious reference AND a 3 word phrase is doubly against the naming policy, yet was never changed.
Aily, Jhon, Phoibe, Kolbjorn, Cecil, Konstantinos, Hodgewinkle, Thiniaa, Drakain, Gwyneira
It's not that hard to get real names: www.behindthename.com
Hollow Leviathan Mar 26th 2009 1:58PM
Yes, most names that violate the naming conventions don ' t get changed. I still report the more idiotic and offensive of them. I have about a .400 batting average.
Honestly, the people who bother me the most would be those who have their race/class/spec in their name, and those whose alts are all vowel iterations on their main. treecaster, UDwarr, etc. And the inevitable train of Law, Lªw, Luw, Laew, ...
Drahliana May 21st 2009 12:05AM
Blizzard for the most part doesn't care about naming rules unless the names are blatantly offensive or otherwise violate the TOS for the most part. They'll give some thought to a name on a RPPVE or RPPVP server, but on a PVE or PVP one, it's anything goes because they don't expect the players there to give a damm, and for the most part.... they don't. It's more of a semi-machismo contest to deliberately either edge the rules or edge the public sensitivity at times.
Or it's just something lame like Deathjedi... or Legolax.
On an RP server the situation is only somewhat better.
Keyra May 21st 2009 12:17AM
"Legolax" - LOL!
I've seen numerous variations/bastardizations of Legolas all over the place, and yeah...it's definitely lame.
And then there are the squillions of Death Knights with "Death" in their names...come on, people! Sigh...oh well.
But you're right - on RP servers, for the most part, people generally put some thought into their names...even on those RP servers where there isn't a lot of actual RP going on.
VSUReaper Mar 25th 2009 6:48PM
Boondockst - my first serious character - named after my favorite movie Boondock Saints - UD priest, I still get a ton of compliments on it, and even more people making fun of my b/c they think the name is from that craptacular show/comic strip "The Boondocks"
Bulliwyf - My current main- came up with the name after the famous warrior Beowulf, or as the islamic translation is spelled in english: Buliwyf. Toss in the fact hes a cow, and voila: Bulliwyf
Pyras - My goof off pally, I got stumped on a good name for a BE that didnt sound cheezy and that the game would let me use... alot of them got rejected for one reason or another.
Ironically, I smashed my forehead into the keyboard and somehow got pyra out of it.... LOL
Buundox Mar 26th 2009 9:49AM
Yea, I also chose my name from the movie Boondock Saints.
I started out as Boondocks, then when I transferred I had to name change and chose Buundox. It has grown on me. And people do guess where it came from sometimes, which is pretty cool.
Rodrigo Mar 25th 2009 6:51PM
Ratzinger is a totally epic name for a dwarven paladin! A stout fighter for all thats holy...
jbodar Mar 25th 2009 7:57PM
Don't you mean shadow priest? ;)
Rodrigo Mar 25th 2009 8:04PM
I was thinking about making a Dwarf SP, with cool sandals and all, but priests (esp shadow) seem rather like an open-minded, freethinking people, while the paladins think about redemption and avengement in the afterlife and all that dogmatic jazz...
wunderwood Mar 25th 2009 6:52PM
I would love to see more about tips for making a good name and less about what is a bad name.
Alanid Mar 26th 2009 2:10PM
Well, it took me a while to get Alanid - but it's actually pretty simple, he's a paladin, remove the P switch the D and the N, and BAM, there's my name. The armory (EU one at least) only shows 2 people with the name Alanid, so it worked pretty well imo ^^
Gotta say, I've tried this method with some other classes and they are either hilarious, or don't make sense.
