Breakfast Topic: When did WoW click for you?
Surprisingly, yesterday's Breakfast Topic wasn't a flood of QQ as I'd initially feared. A lot of the posts were constructive, informative, and some were pretty well thought out. Admittedly some others were plain QQ, but you can't help that. Welcome to the Internet. Well, enough of the complaints. If you're reading WoW Insider, chances are you're playing the game and enjoying it. I know I am.
Vonya over at The Egotistical Priest is enjoying the game, too, and I'm kidnapping her question for this morning. She relates how WoW just suddenly became more than just a game to her while traipsing through the fungus-laden caverns of Maraudon. She also recalls seeing a Devilsaur for the first time (or not seeing it and getting totally eaten by it, more likely...). There are moments in this game where it became really special for us. I know the very first time I entered the Undercity I was completely enthralled... I'd never played an MMO before, and I fell completely in love with the wacky, Tim Burtonesque design of the Forsaken capital. I spent hours just ogling and it wasn't even at Sylvanas.
What was your moment? When did WoW become something special to you? When did the game reel you in? I know that our interest in this game waxes and wanes, but there was -- I'm certain of it -- a particular moment while playing where excitement and wonder coalesced, pushing World of Warcraft just a teensy bit over the definition of 'just another video game'. When did that happen for you? Oh, and yeah, that's a Whitney Houston video. You're welcome.

For me it was when they announced clams would stack.

"Click" is really the right word.
It clicked for me when I first reached the gates of Stormwind, saw huge statues of alliance races and the background music kicked in. It was like it's saying "you, my friend, just bumped into something really epic".

When my first green dropped off a mob in Ghostlands. The music in Orgrimmar. Going into Ragefire Chasm solo. These events changed me from playing a couple hours a day to all day off and on. And I'm still driven by the same things, getting new items and the challenge of solo dungeon. Hope it never ends.
In the real world there was a time when I'm driving along, see a pond and get the instinct to drop a fishing line in. That kind of scared me, I'm thinking "You are now mental over this game!"

I attempted to solo RFC with a level 17 hunter...I didn't know what "Dungeon" and "Elite" meant at the time...lol!
I was trying to figure out where the people that went in ahead of me went, and why I couldn't kill anything without dying! Looking back, I can't help but laugh at my frustration. :P

WoW clicked for me instantly...I had been playing games like Fable and Elder Scrolls hoping for something I handt experienced since Ocarina of Time. WoW was that. I think I fell in love with Dun Morogh as soon as I left the start bit. Ironforge just overwhelmed me and Stormwind was just so great.
My one really epic moment was battling on top of the pyramids in ZF, it was just amazing and I don't think I enjoyed something in an instance so much till Kara & Malygos.

Back when I was into RPing, there were some amazingly awesome RPs done (like when my Warlock performed a demonic ritual that transferred a portion of the magic energy stored in my felhunter to a Mage who had somehow lost the ability to cast spells... long explanation behind how it went down but I basically pulled it off both visually (using certain spells and other specifics) and... textually?) . If anything, back in those days I really was into my character(s); now I just type up stories when I'm bored at times.

The first days exploring the world with my undead rogue, teamed up with another rogue and tried out the zeppelin to find out there was a whole other continent on the other side! then venturing through the barrens, not doing a awful lot of quests but at that time the game felt so epic and the world seemed endless...
That feeling i probably never get back :(
Also entering the dark portal for teh first time was a highlight of wow for me

My most treasured moment was when I made it into Ironforge from the cold of Dun Morogh the first time. The vaulted ceilings, the flowing steel, the dwarves singing heigh-ho. I was instantly smitten.

When I saw the first screenshots of the game...
I was in love with Warcraft III. The idea that I could walk as a character in the 'world' I liked that much was pure extasy!
I will never forget the moment I stepped into Orgrimmar for the first time....

Several moments, really
- Seeing Ony's head hanging in the gates of SW on my first logon
- The Missing Diplomat questline
- Meeting and making friends in game
- Entering Outland for the first time....Hellfire Penninsula ftw!
- Just walking into Blackrock Mountain for the first time two weeks ago on my alt, and I was blown away! Nice to know the game can still do that....

It was when I first played WoW and I was so taken back by the color and beauty of Darnassus. I'm still amazed by its use of purple. Wow!

Scarlet Monastery. That was where I first learned to tank. I apologize to the countless pugs I wiped until I learned what I was doing.

I think the very first time I sat on a rock surrounded by lava and saw Ragnaros suddenly pop up in all his fiery glory. It was what I had been waiting for for the better part of a year and I felt so accomplished. Of course I died...but still.

I had a friend that would play (gather) on his lunch hour. When I wasn't busy I would go back and watch. I couldn't believe that someone would pay $15/month to play. He was playing a mage and would attack something and the other animals in the area wouldn't fight back (I had no idea about aggro). He gave me his trial period and CD's to install at home.
The moment it clicked for me was when i went home for lunch a couple of days later and my trial period had run out. I left work that night and drove an hour to pick the game up. A couple of weeks later I ran into one of the guys I play D&D with and told him about the game. He said the same thing, "You pay $15 a month to play a computer game?" His wife was out of town so I went to get my CD's and the trial code. Most of the guys in our guild are from our small town. We play World of Warcraft and our wives are Widows of Warcraft.....LOL

At first I'd say it was the lore, the history of the quests in my Teldrassil days, getting the story part by part while questing for the teaching Druids in Shadowglen and Dolanaar. But really it was somewhere in the mid teens and I'm standing in Auberdine when a Druid askes me to help charter his guild, the Moonwood Rangers. I say sure. We found the the group and a couple of days later he leaves after sneaking up behind me and snapping a Guildmaster hat on my head. And after that it was one long moment when I realised I could make this a roleplaying guild.... a moment that capped when I found mysself standing side by side with the leader of the Tears of Draenor Horde guild after leading a cross-faction sweep of the Stairs of Destiny.
So it actually was one long continuous moment.

The first time I got that wow rush was doing the Tower of Athalaxx quest line in Darkshore. Its super corny, but I started on a BC server the second day it opened and got to figure out how to fight to the top of that tower with a group of my new friends.
Jimmy Mar 26th 2009 10:04AM
Definitely has to be Ragnaros... the first BIG boss in the game where you had to zoom out and look up to see his model. Screenshots aplently after you down him for the first time with 40 other excited people.
Rexann Mar 26th 2009 10:06AM
I have to admit that reading everyone's posts made me a bit emotional. My first click came early on in Teldrassal. I had just gotten to Dolanaar and realized that there was an enormous tree creature in front of me! I followed it around around or quite awhile completely fascinated. From there on its been one "click" moment after another... Well you all know what I'm talking about.

My very first character was a human warlock. I remember trying to get my voidwalker, and going to that damned cabin to get the necklace from the wizard. I died at least eight times trying to do it. (I was still clueless on using fear, or any other the other use spells in that situation.) I finally killed the wizard and grabbed the necklace, running like hell to the road. I felt so fulfilled. After years of wasting time with other characters, I finally rerolled a warlock and remembered why I love this game. I finally got her to Northrend and I couldn't be happier.
Lianne Mar 26th 2009 10:12AM
I love my Warlock! :3 She's the first toon I leveled past 25...the others just didn't do it for me. :P
