FileFront suspending operations indefinitely
Our old friend Moo Money wrote in a little earlier today (along with a few readers) to alert us of some news that has the potential to hit the WoW community pretty hard: FileFront is closing its doors, citing poor economic conditions as the reason why they're indefinitely suspending the site's operations. As of March 30th, 2009, FileFront will be gone.Countless WoW videos are currently hosted on FileFront, including some of our favorite machinima, many that we've highlighted on the site previously. It's not just machinima, either. I know many of my friends that arena heavily find and host their videos on FileFront, and my raid has linked to strategy videos that were hosted there, too.
While it's never fun to lose a good, mostly free host, I suspect the internet won't have a problem finding another. The big issue here from a WoW player's POV is the potential loss of amazing material the WoW community has put out with the downfall of FileFront. If there are videos you absolutely don't want to lose, you still have a few days to download them. Buckle down, find your favorites, and make sure they're not lost to the ages.
We can always find another host, but it's still a little depressing to see such a popular service go under due to the economy. Even if it were a site I never used (which isn't the case) it's never good to see this sort of thing happen.

I can't believe this is happening :S
Possibly an April Fool's joke?
Dreadskull Mar 26th 2009 1:44PM
Unless they plan to close down the site for two days (since it says they're shutting down on March 30th) and then bring it back up on April 1st yelling "haha! fooled you all!", this is probably real

FileFront is owned by Ziff Davis who recently had to sell EGM and 1up to UGO due to financial difficulties (UGO then shut down EGM, but that's another story).
They'd managed to hold on to FileFront for a while, but I guess they're really going under. :(
R.I.P. FileFront.

Damn...Today is a sad day now, first it was good going back in time thinking about the first days of wow.... but not this has ruined it...
File Front... Thanks for a good many years of holding the only place I got my game patch data..
Amaxe Mar 26th 2009 1:20PM
Wow...
I used to download so many KotOR mods from that site. I'm going to miss it.
(/e Sighs, wanting to play KotOR again as a commemoration but lost the damned play disc and is unemployed and can't get another copy...)
Alexander Mar 26th 2009 2:30PM
Download the no cd crack. You own the game so it's legal.
Amaxe Mar 26th 2009 2:36PM
Well, without the play disc, i can't reinstall the game. :(
PeeWee Mar 26th 2009 3:27PM
TPB
Google it.
Alexander Mar 26th 2009 5:44PM
That works too...and is still legal with a valid license of the game.
Thebum Mar 26th 2009 6:06PM
KotOR.. I have played that game too much these last few days. I find myself pressing f4 in WoW to autosave now :
Murdax Mar 26th 2009 1:39PM
I am truly sorry to see it go, and hope that after the recession has passed that they will open their doors up again once more. So until then File Front we the WoW community would like you to know that our thoughts are with you.
Bossy Mar 26th 2009 1:46PM
Why the moaning ?????????
You ALL want WOW to go away !!!!!
Moaning and complaining. Now it ALL serves you right.
Get lost moaners.
JDM Mar 26th 2009 1:49PM
While I understand that it has an impact to some, many of us avoided that site, as it didn't really offer anything that other places already did. Sure, we'll lose all of the things that are hosted there exclusively, but honestly, there's no shortage of places to host your media with the downfall of this website. Perhaps that is one thing which accelerated it's demise?

This is likely to be only the first of a series of major closings. With the tanking economy and resultant lack of subscriptions and ad income, expect more of these sites to follow Filefront into permanent closure.
The Hammer Mar 26th 2009 1:50PM
Jesus...
So many mods stored on there, for all sorts of different games. Half Life 2, Battlefield... and all the sites around the network.
Oh, sad day, sad day!
