Arcane Brilliance: Okay, now I like spirit

Each week Arcane Brilliance glances around to make sure there are no Death Knights in the area, then daintily tiptoes out from cover long enough to throw together a column about Mages. Usually, this ends badly for Arcane Brilliance. Out of nowhere, a big purple rope-looking thingy wraps itself around Arcane Brilliance's neck and drags it backward into a big stabby implement of some type. Arcane Brilliance tries to fight back, but finds it has been silenced three different ways and the Death Knight that just jumped it has enclosed them both beneath some kind of ugly anti-magic igloo. So, Arcane Brilliance no longer want to hear any complaints about misspelled words or grammatical errors. Arcane Brilliance is simply too busy getting ganked by Death Knights to proofread. I swear.
When I posted on Wednesday about the giant Mage Q&A session hosted by the developers, I was cautiously optimistic. The developers repeatedly assured Mages in that Q&A thread that they were keeping a close eye on our performance on the PTR, that a lot of our concerns would shake themselves out as we continued along through the testing process. Chief among these concerns of late has been the nerf to Molten Armor and its glyph, a change that tied the formerly static 5% crit buff those offered to spirit and turned out to be a nerf to the large majority of Mages and a slight buff to only the most well-geared among us. As nerfs went, it wasn't the most devastating one in recent memory, but was disproportionately reviled by Mages because it forced us to pay attention to a stat that was otherwise of little value to us. In the Q&A thread, we were told that the developers were aware of our concerns and would consider upping the spirit-to-crit conversion rate if they felt it necessary. I remained positive, but wasn't exactly holding my breath.
It appears I needn't have been skeptical. The latest PTR build already reflects a few very nice changes for those of us who like to wear robes, waggle sticks in the air, and hurl large flaming orbs of magical death at Warlocks. That's right, my fellow Mages: It appears the nerf-train has at least temporarily run itself off the rails. Follow me after the break, and we'll go over the specific changes.
Molten Armor and Glyph of Molten Armor
When this spell and its glyph were first altered, they offered a max conversion rate for spirit to crit rating of 40% (25% from Molten Armor and 15% from the glyph). You needed at least 575 spirit fully buffed for this not to be a nerf.
The latest PTR build has increased the crit rating gained by spirit from Molten Armor to 35%, and its glyph to 20%. Let me get out my abacus and slide-rule...carry the one...divide by zero...yep, that means we can now get a total of 55% of our spirit as crit rating.
So how much spirit do we need now? Well, to get back to the 5% this spell and its glyph used to give us, we need 418 spirit at level 80. That's not bad at all. You'll pick up that much spirit without even trying with the current itemization, unless you're actively avoiding it. If you've been picking up a lot of spirit for some reason, you're going to be in very good shape once the patch hits. That same 575 spirit that we needed a week ago just to get back to 5% crit? This week it would give you almost 7% crit. I don't even need my abacus to tell me that 7% is 2 whole percent more than 5%. Okay, who am I kidding...I totally needed my abacus for that.
This new 55% conversion rate is really nice, and it will only get nicer as we progress into Ulduar. This change means that our spirit will scale quite favorably going forward, to the point that the stat is actually quite valuable for Mages. Instead of it being an albatross around our necks--yet another stat we're now forced to pay attention to--spirit is now of relatively high value to us. It's not quite up there with crit rating or intellect or anything like that, but when that General Vezax drops the Mantle of the Unknowing in 25-man Ulduar, we have as much a right to it as the Priest does.
Now, clearly all of this is still in flux. Blizzard appears set on converting spirit to crit rating for Mages who use Molten Armor, but the actual amount of crit we get is atill subject to change. By the time this change goes live, we could easily be getting more or less crit from Molten Armor than we do as of this writing on the PTR. But for now, I'm relatively happy with the numbers. 418 spirit is not terribly hard to get, and 55% will scale nicely with the spirit we pick up as we delve deeper into the end-game. Lets cross our collective fingers and hope we don't get screwed. And yes, I'm aware that you could give the same admonition to a group of people getting bussed off to prison. Get your mind out of the gutter.
Improved Scorch/Winter's Chill
The selfish buff I mentioned in Wednesday's post is still in effect for these two spells. It still sucks that these were chopped in half in the first place, but at least Blizzard is willing to throw us a small bone.
Fire
- Improved Scorch: Increased critical strike chance is now 1%, down from 2% per application of the Improved Scorch effect. In addition, the critical strike chance of Scorch, Fireball, and Frostfire Bolt is increased by 1/2/3%.
- Winter's Chill: Increased critical strike chance is now 1%, down from 2% per application of Winter's Chill. In addition, the critical strike chance of Frostbolt is increased by 1/2/3%.
The nice part of this selfish buff is that the 3% crit for our main nukes is entirely passive. It requires no casting of Scorch or Frostbolt to apply. It's always up. So even if you forget to keep Improved Scorch stacked for some reason, the raid will still lose its 5% crit debuff, but you'll be sitting pretty with your 3% Frostfire Bolt crit buff. Who needs the rest of the raid anyway, right? Wait, that came out wrong.
Living Bomb
One last change that bears mentioning is the massive buff to Living Bomb that appears to have gone up with this last PTR build. Word on the street--and my own suspicion--is that this may well be unintended--a bug--but we'll see. The base damage on the final explosion this spell triggers is up by more than double, from 306 to 690. That's a whole lot of buff to a spell that already does a sizable amount of damage. I'm not complaining, mind you. In fact, I'm going to shut up right now, just in case...
You know what, screw it. This spell is the 51 point talent for the Fire tree. It should be doing a crapload of damage. Mages are supposedly the kings of AoE, right? Right?
In closing...
I'm no longer worried, to be quite honest. Our damage is good now, and getting better on the PTR. We're still in a much better place right now as a class than we ever were during Burning Crusade. Blizzard has thrown some nerfs our direction, but they're also proving to be fairly reasonable about balancing them out over time.
In fact, I think I'm through devoting full column to these weekly changes. In the future, though I'll still be mentioning new stuff, I'll do it in the course of a column about something else. Of course, if the change is a big one, something warranting the extra coverage, I'll give it the space it's due. If next week Polymorph gains the ability to turn Warlocks into tamable pets, you can bet I'll be cranking out a couple thousand words on that change. But if Molten Armor gets buffed or nerfed another 5% or whatever, that'll get a paragraph at the end or something. I want to do some more stuff, like an updated Mage profession guide or a PvP-centric column or something. Any suggestions for what you'd like to see in this space? If you offer me no ideas, you have only yourselves to blame when next week's column is all about

this entire story was a giant ball of QQ. jesus try to be positive at least a little bit.. all i got outta this was an emo kid with copious amounts of dark makeup crying about how shitty his life it, with some razors nearby.

Easy, hit the back button on your browser and go away then.

Improved Scorch now = 10% crit for mages, and everyone else.
Improved Scorch in 3.1 = 8% crit for mages, and 5% for everyone else.
Not only is that a nerf to mages, but it's a gigantic nerf to the DPS that the mage is responsible for due to the extra crit from the entire raid.
As far as future articles, how about this. "Is there ANY reason at all for a raiding mage to keep tailoring rather than leveling Jewelcrafting?" Or "why is tailoring in Wrath such absolute garbage?"
Aigarius Mar 29th 2009 9:26AM
All mages, except Arcane mages. So, Arcane is relatively nerfed by 3% crit.
Sarabande Mar 29th 2009 10:03AM
I agree. :)
Khalis Mar 29th 2009 1:54PM
Actually, Arcane mages will suffer the full 5% nerf that the rest of the raid is getting hit with. They are able to double dip in the +hit pool though with Precision + Arcane Focus. The extra 3% hit should make up for the 3% crit that Fire/FFB mages get.
I tend to forget that Arcane mages exist since I've been playing fire since level 10.

Hey fellow mages and QQ troll's!
Been reading Arcane Brilliance for a while now and always enjoy the thread :)
I am currently arcane specced for pve and using mage armor, the new changes to molten armor sound great, but for me im worried that i will have to change to a fire spec to use it.
Will i still need mage armor to reach 100% mana regen in the next patch or will talents suffice? I currently have 500 spirit unbuffed.
Thanks!

Suggestions for future columns.
Talent spec comparisons with analysis. With the dual spec coming in this could be a timely discussion to have. This would probably be a series with all this info...
-- Why frost is good for PvP (or not).
-- Why Arcane is good for raiding (or not).
-- Whats the advantage of FFB builds over the others. if any?
-- What specific gear stats go with each build to optimize the benefits of a certain spec.
Crowd control and when to use it. Good basic info for new mages and great reminders for the rest of us.
-- e.g. Frost nova friend or fowl while running instances with other classes that are using CC?
-- When is it appropriate to sacrifice yourself to save the healer when they get aggro. a.k.a burst damage and how to save a wipe.
-- Along the same lines, what are our aggro dumps and whats the best way to use them.
Professions for the mage sounds interesting, I'll be looking forward to that one. Don' forget gathering profs are sometimes great for a mage.
What are the best class specific buffs to have in an instance from other classes and why? What is that Pally buff and why should I ask for a different one?
For the PvP guide I'd like to see something along the lines of here is a good way to kill x class in a given situation. What are the counters to a rogues stun? If any? How do I stay mobile and still cast? More along the lines of a tactical guide.
How about a weekly link to another site that discusses the mage relevant to what you are writing about? e.g talent column(s) might point to elitist jerks forums.
What trinkets/rings/weapons are worthwhile to farm. Could be a paragraph each week with a link to where to find it and/or how to farm for it.
What reputations are good for the mage? Are any better than others?
Lastly, my favorite. Where are the good AOE grinding spots for cloth/greens/rares etc. Another weekly tip maybe?
Anyway, just some ideas off the top of my head. Thanks for asking!
Bim Mar 29th 2009 2:06PM
I'd like to see some PvP colums with the new Dual Spec feature on the horizon. Strategies, gear, team compositions etc,.
JackOfAllGames Mar 29th 2009 3:27PM
Hmm... I assume that the improved scorch and winter's chill debuffs still won't stack.
As one who loves playing an arcane mage, this is looking like a disappointing patch. Not enough to make me want to respec, but as a PvE mage, the continuing nerfs are disappointing. =/
Ice Princess Mar 30th 2009 6:59PM
Hi I've got a really noob question, forgive me in advance for it but I often wonder why having a considerably higher spell power, I'm still number 2 or 3 in DPS compared to my friend who has less spell power???
I have more epics than him (read: better PVE geared) while he's more geared than me in PVP.
Why is it that he still beats me when we duel or when we run a raid/instance together, he beats me at the DPS charts.
My bf points it out to me in a less tactful manner by saying, "There's only so far that gear can take you. " LOL
So, could it be related to spell rotation? Or is it just because I don't know my class well?
I really want to improve, I've been playing for nearly 2 years but have been super casual for the first 1 1/4 years. It's only now that I'm starting to play seriously.
HELP!
Allin Mar 29th 2009 10:56PM
I have been switching trough Arcane PvE and FFB PvE just as much as I have been switching from Arcane PvP (PoM Pyro) and Frost PvP, yet, I still can not fully decide what to choose when Dual Specs hits. The Living Bomb stuff makes me want to try out FFB PvE again. But to be honost, when it all comes down, it's just what you like the best to play. After all, it's "just a game", right? So:
What I'd NOT like to see in your next column:
- PvP tactics and how to gear for PvP, enchants, gems, w/e. Really, if people can't do their own research about their own class, don't bother playing it.
What I DO like to see:
- Even tho Ulduar is going to be "bring the player not the class", I'd like to see some stuff about the role of mages in the Tier 8 content. Will there be CC-ing? God please let there be CC. I haven't used my Polymorph button in ages, except for those couple of times to save myself from whiping, allowing me to cast invisibility.
- The long and forgotten FIREBOLT-mage spec. How's it going with that? I'd like to see some statistics about that spec in comparison to other specs in raids. Been wanting to try it out for a couple of weeks now since i've read some good things about it, but haven't really got the chance for it yet.
And I can't say it enough, but just like most of the other peeps in here: love your columns! Keep them coming, then i'll try to counterspell the damn warlocks that always ruin everything in here.
Acumin Mar 30th 2009 2:42AM
Next week's column:
why does hot streak make the same sound as an achievement? an in depth analysis of why blizzard runs out of noises.
great job on this weeks column though!
For the future though, I'd like to see a discussion on useless spells in our book, and/or limited use spells, their application and ways to improve them. Amplify magic? When i first got this i thought "sweet! a damage increasing debuff!" and was sorely disappointed to find that it was friendly only. Remove (lesser) Curse? How about mass dispell like Remove (greater) curse?
That, or the homogenization of our class and the future it brings. Once upon a time people sought out mages for their CC and aoe abilities. Now that shamans have hex, ret pallies are around to repent things, and everyone and their mother has a form of aoe, is this "bring the player blah blah" crap going to put us on the backburner for classes that provide equal dps and more utility*cough Shamans/Druids cough* ? is the only class defining skill we're going to keep Ritual of Refreshment? I'd like to hear you tell it more eloquently than i.
Skalleper Mar 30th 2009 12:49PM
MageX said... "What specific gear stats go with each build to optimize the benefits of a certain spec."
Also vice versa, what gear for a specific build goes well with another specific build? Lugging/collecting tons of gear... oh, help us.
A "Remember those...!" column!
- Buttons you're likely to forget - put them farther left!
- Frostbolt(Rank 1): a quick slow for PvP or PvE-runaways!
- Macros - as buttons can also be macros, only the best (PvP - that pot+herb+shield+trinket+nova+blink???). Lots out there, but are there some we often forget?
- Funny items, e.g. the priest-like bubble from that herb! Hmm, I've forgotten it's name.
- Drinks: some cheap potions you could pop, if you feel like using a little gold to kill that bastard Lock dead / survive to see it done :)!
Gormakr Mar 30th 2009 10:35AM
My suggestion for next week's article?
Make a guide on items that currently drop in raid progression that won't be easily replaced in Ulduar - i.e. where should mages spend their DKP. Of course this will rely on the current loot tables and itemization in Ulduar, but that doesn't seem to be changing too much.
I believe Turning Tide, Signet of Manifest Pain and Illustration will likely be at or near the top of that list, but you may disagree if you do some real resarch into the subject.
Camacho Mar 30th 2009 11:29AM
Hey all, hopefully im not too far off subject with this, but its a mage column so why not. Who if anyone plays a mage twink in the 60-69 BG's. Currently I do, and am looking for a build, talent-wise, to maximize my pvp style.
I have googled several phrases for helping me out, but nothing has really shown up that would concern my current player. Currently im fully spec into arcane, and its fun but im looking to get the most out of damage, and survivability. If anyone has suggestions on a lvl 69 build I would greatly apppreciate it.
Janyce Engan Mar 30th 2009 12:39PM
IMO - I don't care what the subject matter is - I love the writing - and am always entertained by what Mr. Belt has to say. Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't find QQing - but rather subtle tongue-in-cheek to be the style here.
Keep up the good work.
Corix Apr 1st 2009 2:37PM
First time posting here. Christian, I read your column every week and its often very humorous and insightful. :)
That said, I just want to add since no one has mentioned this yet but the 3% crit bonus only applies to Frostbolt, Fireball, Scorch and Frostfire bolt.
This means the 3% would not apply to any of your AoE such as Dragon's Breath, Blastwave, Cone of Cold, Blizzard and last but not least Living Bomb which is part of every Fireball/Frostfire bolt rotation.
Nor would this 3% crit bonus apply to your Pyroblasts when you get a Hot Streak proc.
So Blizzard would still stack Winter's Chill to 5% crit but if you're Frost you already have Shatter so not much there.
With the Glyph of Living Bomb coming in 3.1, allowing LB dots to crit (which I am very excited about) we just lost 5% crit for it too.
Nayeli Apr 2nd 2009 12:43PM
I didn't even try to stack spirit (and didn't realize how much I had until I checked) and ended up with 660 at the moment, so this change will end up being a bit of a buff. I know it is not common among mages, more like a sort of coincidence.
First the T7.5 chest and helm both have fair amounts, and the rest really depends on what gear you end up picking up throughout your raids. I've also noticed that gear with crit rating also tend to comes with some spirit (see bracer/belt/offhand/wand/ring#1).
