Ask a Lore Nerd: Fallout

Welcome to Ask a Lore Nerd, where each week blogger and columnist Alex Ziebart answers your questions about the lore and history of the World of Warcraft. Ask your questions in the comments section below, and we'll try to answer it in a future edition.
Sal asked...
"Why don't the level 80 gnomes take back their home and clean up the toxic in it? We're able to run through at level 24 or so and clear the place, but a bunch of level 80's can't?"
Let me tell you something about radioactive fallout: You don't just 'clean it up.' The Chernobyl disaster of 1986, here in the real world, has poisoned the land for years. Select portions of the region affected by the incident were only marked as safe for settlement in 2005, almost 20 years later. That was only a small portion of the affected region. There are still areas of the land that will be uninhabitable for hundreds of years. There's actually a belief that the worst of the Chernobyl disaster hasn't even happened yet. Nature is taking the area back, and that's not a good thing. The plantlife is pulling the radiation back up out of the ground in some places, and making the radiation more dangerous than it was a few years ago. There are places where it's going to get worse before it gets better, for years to come.
Leper Gnomes didn't become lepers because it was in fashion. It's radiation poisoning. Not necessarily true-to-life radiation poisoning, but still radiation poisoning. Why can we adventurers go in, kill some lepers, then go home fine? Radiation like you'd find in a fallout zone like Gnomeregan or Chernobyl probably won't hurt you years later if you're only there for a few minutes, or even hours. It becomes a problem when you're living in it. That's why you see so many pictures taken within Chernobyl, but almost nobody lives in those dangerous areas. Outskirts? Sure. No problem. Where the land is still dangerous? No way can you live there. You can pass through if you're careful and take precautions, but you can't be there very long.
The Gnomes could clean out the lepers and the troggs, but they still couldn't live there. Sure, some things are different in a world of magic and sorcery and all of that sort of thing, but they're still not going to just be able to take a soap and sponge to Gnomeregan and 'clean it up' or anything like that. Even in a world of magic, I suspect making Gnomeregan inhabitable would be an incredible undertaking.
aman asked...
"Now that Malygos is dead, what becomes of the Blue Dragon Flight? Are the remaining blues to be hunted down, left alone, or will a new leader take the reins of the flight?"
We have no solid information as to what will happen, but it's very likely that a less-crazy Blue Dragon will fill the void in leadership left behind my Malygos's demise. Nozdormu, aspect of the Bronze, picked an heir to his 'throne' since he knows well in advance that he will die one day. Since he was able to assign an heir, I suppose the capacity is there for the rest of the Dragonflights to do so as well. If Malygos didn't pick an heir himself, the Flight will probably pick someone in his absence. If the new leader is as much of a bastard as the last one, it might be the end of the Blue Dragons. If the new leader is a good guy/gal? Great!

Because we have our sights set on a new location.
I'm thinking Ulduar will look good with a bunch of mechastriders running around and the occasional random explosion.
Anaxamander Mar 30th 2009 2:46PM
Yeah, but you'll have to wrestle Brann and possibly the Twilight cultists for dibs.
Something tells me that first is a more dire proposition. Brann probably fights dirty when archaeology is on the line.

Levels in general only indicate story progression. A level 24 Trogg is just as dangerous as a level 70 undead, for example. The reason we don't take back Gnomeregan is because we can't without a sizable army. The exception, only exception, is when a mob is >named

Nobody spends "just" an hour in Gnomer. More like, 3-5 hours. If you're lucky.
I think the Gnomes will hang with their height-challenged Dwarf friends for the foreseeable future. Ironforge is awesome. Gnomeragen is fail.
Sweet Sweet SoulShards Mar 30th 2009 1:40PM
Why is the undead all over northrend glowing orange? Is there more of an answer more than the lame "I'ts a new plauge?"
Falcio Mar 30th 2009 1:41PM
Wait....so because I was fighting in Gnomeregan for a bit, I would be infected?
...
Am I going to suddenly transform into a Ghoul in Ulduar? Dang it...=(

Wow. That was the first logical answer to the gnomeregan problem other than "it's a staic world" or "levels don't mean much in lore".
That also made me really depressed, as it means that there's little to no hope of getting gnomer back.
I'm a sad gnome. At least i have Dalaran! Mages ftw.

Also, i'm sure the blue dragonflight will be handled by alexstraza and the council for awhile. They will weed out those who are still defiant, and put a leader in there who the council approves of.
I sincerely doubt that if malygos had an heir the council would be fine with him taking over. Malygos right hand man is prolly just as determined to wipe out magic users as he is.

I think the point of the question is: why do npcs of a much higher level expect us lowbies to do their work for them? It's like that all over the game. "Oh save me! There are some wild animals out there! I need you to kill 10 of them! Never mind that you're level 15 and i'm level 40, i'm just afraid i'll break a nail, so you do it!" etc. It'd make more sense if some npcs were level 1 and asking you for help. At least my initial reaction wouldn't be "You're higher level, do it yourself!" XD
sanar Mar 30th 2009 2:16PM
Delegation. Do you think higher levels can be bothered with killing animals all day?
MoarHeroisms Mar 30th 2009 2:33PM
I vote Kalecgos to lead the blue dragonflight.
Kalec/Diesel 09! Yes he can!!!
Anaxamander Mar 30th 2009 2:43PM
There's at least one blue dragon option that would probably be palatable to the Red Dragonflight, given that he's friendly with Korialstrasz, and has demonstrated a dislike of Malygos' plan to purge all magic users. Kalecgos!
We also don't know where Haleh or Tyrygosa stand on the whole issue. There's also Arygos, for that matter, a known direct son of Malygos, but he may well not be done stomping the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj, given that he was imprisoned there and all.
MoarHeroisms Mar 30th 2009 2:57PM
MoarHeroisms asks...
Dinosaurs. In Azeroth. Why?
OR
Who arrived on Azeroth first: Titans or Old Gods? Did the Titans find Azeroth already infested by Old Gods or did they create the world from scratch prior to the corruption?
Inferenice Mar 30th 2009 4:14PM
when it comes to the old god thing, both questions are correct... The lore is counterdicting...
Xavs Mar 30th 2009 4:09PM
So, I was wondering lately about these statues that seem to pop up every now and then. I've seen them on the Dark portal, Duskwood and a few other places around Azeroth. Do they have any significance? If so, who were they/what did they do?

Whoa, an answer to the Gnomer question that isn't "Status Quo is God." I'm shocked. Kudos for that.

Radiation Poisoning - Dispel type: Poison

I don't know. You'd think if it's something that 5/10 classes can already remove from themselves, those gnomish engineers would be smart enough to create something to neutralize it to.
Tim Mar 30th 2009 6:46PM
The question about Gnomeregon sparked a question of my own.
I only roll trolls if I can help it. Why don't they take out Zazalane and expand Sen'jin village? Trolls have like the worst "home" in the game, just a collection of a couple huts. Or even to take back Stranglethorn Vale.
Raze Mar 30th 2009 4:58PM
I suppose this could apply to pretty much anything with this game's lore, but, radiation or not, if Blizz wanted to, they could come up with an excuse for Gnomeregan being cleaned and habitable again. Probably the Naaru, as they're the go to race for totally implausible goings on in this game, now.
In addition, more likely than not Kalecgos will wind up being the new blue Dragonflight leader, because Metzen has taken a liking to shoving his face up Richard Knaak's ass recently so much that the brown on his nose likely won't come off any time soon. Reason and logic do not a good match make with this game's story.

I would love to see Gnomer taken back and the Gnomes to have their own little spot to call home, but we have two pretty good reasons that won't happen:
1) Horde would have a fit unless the Trolls gt their own city as well. We have a choice of Zul cities... or just clear off the island near the troll starting area and build it up.
2) Gnomes have their sights on the big picture. We let you other races have fun with your "tasty" and "punting" humor... all the while we stand around looking cute as frell and when you least expect it... BAM!!!! We've taken over all of Azeroth... soon to be followed by Outland.
Hmmm... I probably shouldn't have let our plans out of the bag.
People only hate us because we can be cute and tear the place up at the same time.
