The Queue: Casinos? In my WoW?

If you've been reading The Queue for awhile, you'd know that Adam Holisky and I were taking turns writing this thing each day, but he's been sparse lately. Before we get started today, I just wanted to stop and let you guys know that he's okay, he's alive, but the flooding in his hometown of Fargo has gotten pretty ridiculous. He's been documenting the Fargo Flood on his personal blog the whole way through, so if you're interested, give it a gander.
If you have friends or family in the area, or simply want to lend a hand, Red Cross and the United Way have set up some resources for all of you to peruse as well. Keep the people of Fargo in your thoughts, folks. I'm sure having Blackhawks flying over your house loses its cool factor after awhile.
Jack Spicer asked...
"What's the best/easiest way to get starter gear for PvP at 80?"
One of the biggest pitfalls of PvP in Wrath, I've found, is not class imbalance or anything like that. It's how much crap you have to deal with to get a set of gear that'll give you the resilience you actually need to survive a toe-to-toe knock down, drag out fight. You pretty much need a bare minimum of 600 resilience, with 900 as the recommended baseline. That's... absurd.
So what's the easiest way of doing that? Use the mechanics in place that allow you to get PvP gear without PvPing for awhile. Vault of Archavon? Run it as often as you can. Wintergrasp? Again, go as often as you can, but stick to vehicle and cannons, somewhere that you can be effective despite your lack of gear.
There's the blue sets that you can get via tradeskills, but I've found they're not very worthwhile. Some of them are good filler pieces if you absolutely need more survivability, but I find that the resilience they offer doesn't make up for the utter lack of everything else on them.
If you want to sink even more non-PvP time into this, you can get so-so sets via Emblems from Heroics. They do not make breaking into PvP very easy unless you can live with dying every few seconds until you've gathered up 'enough' resilience. It's pretty irritating to get started.
Arivia asked...
"A question: Why does Blizzard hate me? Not my class, my spec, my gear, whether I Arena or don't Arena, my choice of starting zones, faction, race, my fetish for underaged Murlocs, huntardism, hairstyle, /played, or my usage of game cards over those newfangled magnetic strip things: why do they hate me, personally?"
It's probably because of your class, your spec, your gear, how often you arena, your choice in starting zones, your faction, your race, your deviance, your huntardism, your hairstyle, your /played, and your usage of game cards.
Sucks to be you, huh?
Tanisi asked...
"Will World of Warcraft ever implement an in-game alliance system between guilds? I have seen this done in Guild Wars and it worked very well. It would be nice if they added features to these guild alliances like their own chat channel, so you can coordinate events within the alliance."
I have no idea if WoW will ever do any of these things, but I wanted to plug this question because I absolutely want something like this. I love my guild, but my guild is only one portion of the social circle that fuels my raid group and, well... my overall game experience. I love these guys. We have four guilds (and some vagrants) that make up our 'guild alliance' and we like it that way, because each guild has its own environment. My guild is fairly rough and tumble, and not everyone likes that. That's fine! It's really cool that people can find somewhere that's comfortable for them, without needing to leave our overall community since it's a great collective.
It's unfortunate that there's no support for those sorts of things within the game mechanics, but we deal. We share a guild website, we share a custom channel, we share a Vent server. We get by, but it would still be nice to see official support for guild alliances.
blarg_master asked...
"What is Blizzard's stance on gambling in-game right now? I heard that they posted it was cool as long as it was not spam or a scam on the general forums. What's the shtick?"
I asked this question two or three times this past week to various GMs (accompanying other, legitimate tickets) to see what sort of answer I would get, and they've all been pretty dodgy about it. None of them seemed like they really wanted to say flat out that casinos were legal again, but they did say they weren't illegal. Take that as you will.
One thing that was made very clear is that if these casinos are being spammy, you absolutely can (and should) report them for spam. The casino itself seems to be okay now, but the GMs are just eager to chomp them back down via spamming or scamming rather than gambling.

My ignore list now has more casino spammers than my friend's list ... and I have a pretty big friend's list
Do something Blizz - before the Nigerian e-mail scammers zoom in on us!

Some at WoWInterface hates those "casinos" (WTF? something "new" since I was forced out of the game by RL financial issue). This person at WoWI has coded a simple anti-casino spam mod, titled: Anti-Casino
The download is here: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info12931-Anti-Casino.html

I saw a post about casinos on a blog recently, and then withing the hour, someone was /yelling in IF about the one they created.
The only reasons casinos work in real life is that the players trust the people who run them- that's probably not going to be the case in WOW where you can't codify trust, and there's no authority to go to if you get taken.

There doesn't need to be a trust within the casino scam people are running. They have no reason to screw you out of your money by stealing, thats because they are screwing you out of your money because you want them to.
I've seen people offering even money on rolling higher than anywhere from 55 - 65. Personally I think its bad for the game because
1. It gives an easy way for gold farmers to steal other peoples money.
2. It makes a person running a "casino" a huge target for hacking.
3. It capitalizing on younger... or dare I say, stupider... players not knowing how bad they are getting ripped off. I don't know why Blizzard would be ok with this considering much of their player base is under 18 and although its virtual money, its still gambling.
The point is, even if you have to roll only higher than a 55, its like you give the person 10g and he hands you 9g back. Good business if you can get it.
Whenever I see anyone advertising a casino style game like that in chat I make sure to inform everyone that they are getting ripped off. But I guess casinos exist because people like getting ripped off by the house... at least make sure your players are educated enough to know they are getting taken advantage of

The reason casinos were banned in the first place is because you can do the following:
- Make a level 1 casino alt (or even a recruit-a-friend 60+)
- Run a legitimate casino and slowly part fools and their money until someone hands you a 500g+ bet
- Mail the gold to your main and log out
Marveen Mar 30th 2009 11:12AM
One of the reasons I don't pvp is that I don't have bagspace to start collecting yet another set of gear (healing druid is my main, and I have two sets for that role alone: max spellpower for short fights, max regen for long fights).
Triforceelf Mar 30th 2009 11:16AM
Personally, I think that some gambling in game is fine. We used to always bet on which Opera event we would get during our weekly badge runs, with the bets usually running between 5-10 gold. It was fun and harmless, but "casinos" in WoW seem rather odd to me.
Crewdie Mar 30th 2009 11:14AM
I'm exhausted after pulling an all-nighter last night to write a paper. But I can't go to sleep yet because I have a class in a couple of hours. I'm to the point where I don't think I could logically focus on my main so I'm thinking of starting an alt. What would be simple enough for me to grasp while complex enough for me to not fall asleep on the keyboard?

Nothing a hooker and an eight ball of blow couldn't cure...
I kid, I kid.
Don't do drugs kids... Or dirty dirty hookers... Your niblets will fall off.
Nintai Mar 30th 2009 11:32AM

Go level fishing!
AyaJulia Mar 30th 2009 11:48AM
Everything is simple before level 10.
Also, everything before level 10-20 sucks. :)
If you're looking for something without a lot of early class quests or anything (i.e. demons, totems) and want a melee class that you wouldn't have to bother watching your mana for, try a paladin, warrior, hunter, or rogue.
Tryx Mar 31st 2009 3:24AM
"melee class" "hunter"
"wouldn't have to bother watching your mana for" "paladin" "hunter"
LOL

With the new mobile authenticator app, which is free....is it a requirement for the user to have an existing authenticator already set on their account to use or do iPhone users for some reason get a fully functional authenticator for free (which would be pute BS)? Also, any word if a BlackBerry version will ever be made available?
BillDoor Mar 30th 2009 11:18AM
There is no requirement to have had a hardware authenticator prior to using the mobile authenticator app. Think about it this way... the software is free, you're paying for the hardware, by either paying $7 for the keyfob, or $300 for the iPhone.
jaybrous Mar 30th 2009 11:19AM
Casinos? Wow, that brings me back...
cjshrader Mar 30th 2009 11:20AM
@BillDoor
I was under the impression you needed the serial number from the authenticator to activate the program on the iPhone. I believe it was in the article about it on this site.
So yes, you do need a physical authenticator. It's not like Google makes profit from the $300 iPhone.
cjshrader Mar 30th 2009 11:22AM
Oh wow, I think I'm actually wrong about this.

missakins Mar 30th 2009 11:47AM
You do not need a hardware (the $6 one) authenticator to use the iPhone one. The iPhone app starts up and shows you a serial number that you enter on the website to initialise it. It's randomly generated, and you can reset it UNTIL you enter it on the website. After that, if you uninstall the app, reset the serial number or have to reset your phone and lose the app for any reason you'll be on the phone with Blizz.
