The Queue: Casinos? In my WoW?

If you've been reading The Queue for awhile, you'd know that Adam Holisky and I were taking turns writing this thing each day, but he's been sparse lately. Before we get started today, I just wanted to stop and let you guys know that he's okay, he's alive, but the flooding in his hometown of Fargo has gotten pretty ridiculous. He's been documenting the Fargo Flood on his personal blog the whole way through, so if you're interested, give it a gander.
If you have friends or family in the area, or simply want to lend a hand, Red Cross and the United Way have set up some resources for all of you to peruse as well. Keep the people of Fargo in your thoughts, folks. I'm sure having Blackhawks flying over your house loses its cool factor after awhile.

"What's the best/easiest way to get starter gear for PvP at 80?"
One of the biggest pitfalls of PvP in Wrath, I've found, is not class imbalance or anything like that. It's how much crap you have to deal with to get a set of gear that'll give you the resilience you actually need to survive a toe-to-toe knock down, drag out fight. You pretty much need a bare minimum of 600 resilience, with 900 as the recommended baseline. That's... absurd.
So what's the easiest way of doing that? Use the mechanics in place that allow you to get PvP gear without PvPing for awhile. Vault of Archavon? Run it as often as you can. Wintergrasp? Again, go as often as you can, but stick to vehicle and cannons, somewhere that you can be effective despite your lack of gear.
There's the blue sets that you can get via tradeskills, but I've found they're not very worthwhile. Some of them are good filler pieces if you absolutely need more survivability, but I find that the resilience they offer doesn't make up for the utter lack of everything else on them.
If you want to sink even more non-PvP time into this, you can get so-so sets via Emblems from Heroics. They do not make breaking into PvP very easy unless you can live with dying every few seconds until you've gathered up 'enough' resilience. It's pretty irritating to get started.

"A question: Why does Blizzard hate me? Not my class, my spec, my gear, whether I Arena or don't Arena, my choice of starting zones, faction, race, my fetish for underaged Murlocs, huntardism, hairstyle, /played, or my usage of game cards over those newfangled magnetic strip things: why do they hate me, personally?"
It's probably because of your class, your spec, your gear, how often you arena, your choice in starting zones, your faction, your race, your deviance, your huntardism, your hairstyle, your /played, and your usage of game cards.
Sucks to be you, huh?
Tanisi asked...
"Will World of Warcraft ever implement an in-game alliance system between guilds? I have seen this done in Guild Wars and it worked very well. It would be nice if they added features to these guild alliances like their own chat channel, so you can coordinate events within the alliance."
I have no idea if WoW will ever do any of these things, but I wanted to plug this question because I absolutely want something like this. I love my guild, but my guild is only one portion of the social circle that fuels my raid group and, well... my overall game experience. I love these guys. We have four guilds (and some vagrants) that make up our 'guild alliance' and we like it that way, because each guild has its own environment. My guild is fairly rough and tumble, and not everyone likes that. That's fine! It's really cool that people can find somewhere that's comfortable for them, without needing to leave our overall community since it's a great collective.
It's unfortunate that there's no support for those sorts of things within the game mechanics, but we deal. We share a guild website, we share a custom channel, we share a Vent server. We get by, but it would still be nice to see official support for guild alliances.

"What is Blizzard's stance on gambling in-game right now? I heard that they posted it was cool as long as it was not spam or a scam on the general forums. What's the shtick?"
I asked this question two or three times this past week to various GMs (accompanying other, legitimate tickets) to see what sort of answer I would get, and they've all been pretty dodgy about it. None of them seemed like they really wanted to say flat out that casinos were legal again, but they did say they weren't illegal. Take that as you will.
One thing that was made very clear is that if these casinos are being spammy, you absolutely can (and should) report them for spam. The casino itself seems to be okay now, but the GMs are just eager to chomp them back down via spamming or scamming rather than gambling.

If I recall correctly casinos were pretty rampant back before BC and Blizz dropped the ban hammer on anyone caught running a casino. I assume that general ban is still in affect though I have noticed a slight resurgence.

The Casinos quite simply need to go. I don't care if individuals gamble privately, and have done so myself. However, there are young children that play the game and it is quite possible that this can lead to the development of some very bad habits for real life that give games a bad name.
AlexW573 Mar 30th 2009 12:10PM
Isn't it more likely they'd learn how much they can lose so quickly, and not pick it up when they get older?
Shivan Mar 30th 2009 1:11PM
Gambling is an adictive behavior and as such it is not as much about winning or loosing but the thrill side of it.
Huey2k2 Mar 30th 2009 2:10PM
According to the TOS you have to be 18 to make an account on WoW, or get your parents permission.
If you don't want your children learning about things like gambling, don't let them play WoW.

I definitely got a direct response from a GM that gambling is legal (at least two weeks ago). I have a screenshot from the conversation. I reported like 8 gambling casinos because I assumed that it would be illegal given how many ways it can have a negative impact on an economy

When will all the imprisoned goblins/children/arakoa/(other imprisoned creature in wow) go to the innkeeper and get a free hearthstone, like the login tips tell us too?
elvendude Mar 30th 2009 1:42PM
Hello?! Imprisoned! They can't get to the innkeeper to get a new stone (after their original was so rudely stripped from them).
=)

out right casinos in wow cannot be trusted and i feel should not be allowed
however
i totally i agree and have myself engaged in guild lotteries and competitions
anything from lvl toon races to massive free for all brawls in open pvp arenas and even an actuall lottery game for guildies only ( i made a lotto toon and did the draw every week on the hunter rise in TB with officer witnesess and anyone else who wanted to ensure the rolls were done fairly) i had spoken to a GM prior to doing this and he stated that as long as it is within the guild it is ok as it is assumed that all members of the same guild are in aggreement with each other and equally trusted
notworksafe Mar 30th 2009 12:46PM
I've never heard of these in-game casinos befrore, but it brings up an idea a guildie and I had. Blizz should do a lottery like FFXI used to do (not sure if they do anymore). You could pay 100gil for a lottery ticket to win 1million gil (and other prizes like +xp rings and such). You could buy as many tickets as you want and it was a lot of fun.

It's more likely than you think.

...Sorry. Gambling in WoW should be a touchy subject, remember that it was outright banned from Second Life after the government found out and wanted to impose taxes upon the player base.
Riley Mar 30th 2009 6:34PM
yeah, but the difference is that second life uses real money, WoW is only fake money
Arivia Mar 30th 2009 1:26PM
Oh! I'd totally forgotten about my joke question and then you responded to it! One laughing spate later, you've made my day. Thanks Alex!
Rihlsul Mar 30th 2009 2:16PM
Bah, I never get it right. =P
Rauk Mar 30th 2009 1:30PM
Whenever blizzard does come out with epic gems via raids/badges/whatever, do you think they'll let JCers craft even better than the ones they have now? If the whole world has access to a 20agi gem, JCers still only having a 21agi gem doesn't sound like the same advantage as they have now.
ScytheNoire Mar 30th 2009 1:32PM
They really need to add Guild Alliances badly to the game. People have been wanting this for years, and yet, while it would help save a lot of guilds, Blizzard continues to not implement more guild features, like Alliances. Maybe they are saving that for their next MMO?
breaklance Mar 30th 2009 2:01PM
I would love to see some guild alliances and rivalries go further in the game. There are just some guilds people hate, and asides bashing them in trade, theres not a lot you can do if they are your faction. Rivalries like that would be odd to truly coordinate if and when you can gank another guild but its just something I think would be cool.
Alliances would help foster the end game content a little better in my books too. Some top level guilds tend to be snobbish others helpful when asked. You probably won't see a tier 9 guild ally-ing with a t7 guild anytime soon but in environments where guilds get very bored with content such alliances could have their uses despite being stand alone. In much larger guilds you could even see these alliances working like proffessional sports teams, the major league guild, the minor league guild, the farm team guild. Trading players in and out, just an interesting thought, doubtful to happen though.

Has anyone leveled 30-60 solely on grinding whelplings (as they drop lucrative vanity pets)? I was thinking about trying it on my alt. Could be a chore, but it could end up being profitable.
skula Mar 30th 2009 3:53PM
my boyfriend lvled 3-4 times from grinding fireflys for the rare firefly pet. i have a feeling whelps drop easier than this. i helped him kill emerald whelplings for the green whelp pet, and i think that only took an hour or 2.
BigB Mar 30th 2009 1:50PM
Blizz had put the kabosh on gambling long long time ago and they stayed gone. It's a bummer to see them back
I forgot the reasons they used before but I'm pretty sure they just said it was outright illegal
