The Queue: Casinos? In my WoW?

If you've been reading The Queue for awhile, you'd know that Adam Holisky and I were taking turns writing this thing each day, but he's been sparse lately. Before we get started today, I just wanted to stop and let you guys know that he's okay, he's alive, but the flooding in his hometown of Fargo has gotten pretty ridiculous. He's been documenting the Fargo Flood on his personal blog the whole way through, so if you're interested, give it a gander.
If you have friends or family in the area, or simply want to lend a hand, Red Cross and the United Way have set up some resources for all of you to peruse as well. Keep the people of Fargo in your thoughts, folks. I'm sure having Blackhawks flying over your house loses its cool factor after awhile.
Jack Spicer asked...
"What's the best/easiest way to get starter gear for PvP at 80?"
One of the biggest pitfalls of PvP in Wrath, I've found, is not class imbalance or anything like that. It's how much crap you have to deal with to get a set of gear that'll give you the resilience you actually need to survive a toe-to-toe knock down, drag out fight. You pretty much need a bare minimum of 600 resilience, with 900 as the recommended baseline. That's... absurd.
So what's the easiest way of doing that? Use the mechanics in place that allow you to get PvP gear without PvPing for awhile. Vault of Archavon? Run it as often as you can. Wintergrasp? Again, go as often as you can, but stick to vehicle and cannons, somewhere that you can be effective despite your lack of gear.
There's the blue sets that you can get via tradeskills, but I've found they're not very worthwhile. Some of them are good filler pieces if you absolutely need more survivability, but I find that the resilience they offer doesn't make up for the utter lack of everything else on them.
If you want to sink even more non-PvP time into this, you can get so-so sets via Emblems from Heroics. They do not make breaking into PvP very easy unless you can live with dying every few seconds until you've gathered up 'enough' resilience. It's pretty irritating to get started.

"A question: Why does Blizzard hate me? Not my class, my spec, my gear, whether I Arena or don't Arena, my choice of starting zones, faction, race, my fetish for underaged Murlocs, huntardism, hairstyle, /played, or my usage of game cards over those newfangled magnetic strip things: why do they hate me, personally?"
It's probably because of your class, your spec, your gear, how often you arena, your choice in starting zones, your faction, your race, your deviance, your huntardism, your hairstyle, your /played, and your usage of game cards.
Sucks to be you, huh?
Tanisi asked...
"Will World of Warcraft ever implement an in-game alliance system between guilds? I have seen this done in Guild Wars and it worked very well. It would be nice if they added features to these guild alliances like their own chat channel, so you can coordinate events within the alliance."
I have no idea if WoW will ever do any of these things, but I wanted to plug this question because I absolutely want something like this. I love my guild, but my guild is only one portion of the social circle that fuels my raid group and, well... my overall game experience. I love these guys. We have four guilds (and some vagrants) that make up our 'guild alliance' and we like it that way, because each guild has its own environment. My guild is fairly rough and tumble, and not everyone likes that. That's fine! It's really cool that people can find somewhere that's comfortable for them, without needing to leave our overall community since it's a great collective.
It's unfortunate that there's no support for those sorts of things within the game mechanics, but we deal. We share a guild website, we share a custom channel, we share a Vent server. We get by, but it would still be nice to see official support for guild alliances.
blarg_master asked...
"What is Blizzard's stance on gambling in-game right now? I heard that they posted it was cool as long as it was not spam or a scam on the general forums. What's the shtick?"
I asked this question two or three times this past week to various GMs (accompanying other, legitimate tickets) to see what sort of answer I would get, and they've all been pretty dodgy about it. None of them seemed like they really wanted to say flat out that casinos were legal again, but they did say they weren't illegal. Take that as you will.
One thing that was made very clear is that if these casinos are being spammy, you absolutely can (and should) report them for spam. The casino itself seems to be okay now, but the GMs are just eager to chomp them back down via spamming or scamming rather than gambling.

So there is a strange building that I found in Sholazar Basin right next to the portal to Un'goro Crater. I'm just wondering what it's for or what it might be for in the future. I think it would be a cool place to put a new dungeon or something but I can't think of any plot lines relevant. Maybe its just another one of those random Titan made buildings that is there for looks?

Casinos don't generally work in WoW. In real life the games are colorful and varied to make the expected payout of the game seem to be in your favor. In most all generic casino spams in WoW, you give someone gold and they roll a number. In a pure RNG game such as that most everyone can instantly see the expected payout (which in most cases is around 40silver per 1gold).

How long is the armory going to be in Beta? It has been around almost as long as I've been playing the game
eric_barbaric Mar 30th 2009 2:53PM
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Blizzard needs to make a neutral "Las Vegas" style city, complete with casinos (with actual games instead of some virtual dice roll), "boxing" and show arenas (who wouldn't like to see a blood-elf burlesque show), and brothels. Who's with me?
uncaringbear Mar 30th 2009 7:07PM
Doesn't that place already exist? I think the name of the town is Goldshire.
eric_barbaric Mar 31st 2009 8:54AM
What? Goldshire?! Not even close. First, it's not neutral, second....well...everything else I mentioned ISN'T EVEN REMOTELY THERE IN GOLDSHIRE!!!
Elthy-san Mar 30th 2009 3:06PM
I don't think the casinos are that bad.
I ran in to one earlier today with a 13k bankroll and the following rules:
1. Pay your gold.
2. /roll
3. Roll above fifty, double your money.
4. Roll above 90, triple your money.
:D
Hendrata Mar 31st 2009 9:46AM
Whoever sets up that rule fails at basic math. In the long run, the casino is gonna lose and you (the user/gamer/gambler) gains money.

My hometown is down river from Fargo, so I have all of that to look forward to. I hope Adam keeps fighting the flood waters and comes back, even if he might be a bit soggier than when he began.
Irshalthra Mar 30th 2009 3:50PM
Adam time to get back!!! Flood waters are receding and life will be normal real soon. Oh no, don't worry about the clean up nor the HUGE snowstorm on you now (add insult to injury eh). Just get back to wow - we need you.
Sounded real fun, so when will the 100 year floods stop coming every 15 years or so? I am from South of there originally - Wahpeton - I know what you're going through.

When the new Arena season arrives, will the arena points I have currently be reset?
Caspian Mar 30th 2009 4:33PM
Question.
I have a friend playing on the other server and i'd like to chat with him in-game. Is this possible? Is there an add-on for this?

I would say just use xfire

the casinos running on staghelm horde are profitable bets for us. i think the EV was 0.07g per bet in our favor. nice casinos.

Hello WoWInsider team!
As a pretty new reader of Wow Insider, I would drop in my first reply and hope I can get my question answered.
I noticed that with every new PTR build that is being put up, for some reason MMO-Champion seems to have the (unofficial) changes listed before at least the European PTR client (and I think even the US client) is download-able. How does this work? Does MMO have an inside scoop in the build client before. or how is this method of data mining working? Can you shed any light on this?
Kind Regards,
Roger

My question is about the Syndicate faction. I know you can raise rep with them by killing Ravenholdt members. Is there anything that can ever come from that other than them not attacking you on sight? If you reach neutral or higher will any of them speak to you? Quests? Vendors? It seems to be the biggest waste of a faction I've ever seen anywhere in the game if NOTHING ever comes out of it.
Sean Mar 30th 2009 5:48PM
Now that Maryland has passed legislation to allow casinos to be established, (at least I'm pretty sure that's what happened,) do you think Blizzard will take the restrictions off of Marylanders from participating in arena tournaments and the various contests they host? I'm not sure how these things work but I'd like to know.
Neena Mar 30th 2009 6:00PM
The whole thing is definitely one of those "everything old is new again" things.
I remember when Blizzard banned the dice games when they cropped up about 3 1/2 years ago or so.
But because the game is full of newer GMs (not to mention players -- my impression is that very few current players have been playing since vanilla), it seems that ban has fallen by the wayside.
Ugh. Thank God for the report spam-ignore feature.

Hey, I'm pretty new to WoW having dinged my first 80 about two months ago. I've done heroics and have started doing 10 man OS and 10 man Arch with my guild, however, in order to do the higher level raids my guild does (25mans, 10 man naxx) My guild requires "ventrilo".
I have no idea what this is other than that it lets me talk to my guildies in realt time like an xbox360 mic w/ xbox live. If anyone can give me any pointers like where i download the software, what mic i need, is there any problems etc etc, i would greatly appreciate it.
Balius Mar 31st 2009 12:35PM
Try looking up Ventrilo on Google, and all your questions can be answered by the first link.
