Public Service Announcement: WIM's modem sounds are a joke
We're going to cover all the April Fools jokes from around the WoW community tomorrow (after they're over so we're sure we don't miss too many), but I wanted to take a moment to give a PSA about the WoW Instant Messenger add-on.When you log into the game today, and if you're updated to the latest version, you'll hear a modem sound ring across your speakers. This is a joke, this is only a joke, and you have no need to be alarmed.
We've gotten many tips in about this, mainly people thinking that it's the Confiker virus which was supposed to start today. Well, it's not. And from the look of things Confiker is bust too (at least for now). So you're safe and okay, and can be angry that you've been had by an add-on author. Or just laugh about it, which is what I've done.
The author has even come out and said this is a joke, and is offering an apology to anyone upset by this.

Actually, it's Conficker.

I admit, it's a funny joke. But I hope that this is the only developer that implements useless stuff into his addon. Adding a sound file could decrease loading speed.

Hahah ... funny stuff ... I heard my laptop do it twice last night, happened both times I changed characters. I thought that my new laptops internal modem was on the fritz .... nice one !!! Funny:P

This was the best April Fools joke I came across yesterday.
I heard it first during a raid, late after midnight. I had the radio on and nearly called the station because I thought they were the ones that were broadcasting the sound.
When I woke up in the morning and still heard the sounds, I freaked out too.
I did so many searches trying to relate the sounds to the Conficker before I finally narrowed it down to WoW.
I actually thought it was another Blizzard joke until I scanned my addons folder for sound files.
Definitely will be saving this one for later use.

Sounds like Spanish(or something) for First. I don't mind you firsters, but I guess others will downrank you now.

*chuckle* that's not a first post. Conficker is the supposed big scary virus that was suppose to reign terror yesterday.
RogueJedi86 Apr 2nd 2009 3:31PM
Great, everyone's downvoting my comment because they don't see the First post that I had replied to and commented on it being a cleverly disguised first. They deleted that First post, and now all they see is mine, so people assume I was the one making a first post.
RogueJedi86 Apr 2nd 2009 3:33PM
For the record, when I made my reply, the first post was a post saying "Premiero". When it got deleted, my post got shuffled down to lower in the comment list; apparently because my reply was to the first, but chronologically after other posts on timestamps.

Lunar Sphere popped up a WoW addon error screen this morning. I was irritated because I thought it was yet another addon that will now get de-activated and eventually deleted due to the recent addon developer/WoW policy business. After I hit "Ok" a few seconds later another window popped up saying "April Fools!"

You know what would be funny. All guilds who go to either do or attempt 3d should be allowed to drop it, but then everything comes back to life and they get an April Fools acheivement.
Now that would be hilarious.
Virex Apr 1st 2009 5:43PM
Yeah the lunarsphere one got me... I had a good laugh though...
Chardonney Apr 1st 2009 5:51PM
Ya, WIM got me good! My guild thought I was nuts when I tried explaing the modem tones when I logged in! LOL
Eric Apr 1st 2009 5:52PM
You downed WIM's servers
Nintendwarf Apr 1st 2009 5:58PM
I was wondering where that sound was coming from.
Doriginal Apr 1st 2009 6:26PM
OMG! I was up late last night playing the game and everyone was asleep and my house was quiet. All of the sudden I hear a dial up modem sound coming through my surround sound.
I was freaked out to say the least, I stood up, looked at my cable modem, checked my speakers, looked outside for spies, ran a spyware/virus scan etc. I could not figure it out so I just turned my sound down all the way. If I had been smoking at the time, I would have been even more paranoid lol.
This was an excellent gag from WIM. Waay better than any of Blizzards gags from past April fools. Great Job lol!
Gulbrandt Apr 1st 2009 6:48PM
Haha! So *that's* where that sound is coming from.
I thought, "What the...?! I don't even have a modem..??"
Extra geek points for thinking, "Huh, the last modem sound I'm really familiar with is V.90, not V.92."

"mainly people thinking that it's the Confiker virus which was supposed to start today. "
Yes, because the intent of one of the largest viruses was to steal your WoW loots. Honestly, people who thought this probably DO have the Conficker virus...only out of complete idiocy.
