The Queue: Strategery

Good afternoon, everybody! I apologize for missing yesterday's edition of The Queue, I sort of forgot about it in my rush to get our April Fool's joke pieced together. The entire team got together to bring that little joke to life. Getting it all put together was like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Fun, but it took awhile! Hopefully you guys enjoyed it. If not, oh well! We had a good time bringing it to life.
I don't think you want to listen to me ramble about that, though. Onto the Q&A!
Ghola asked...
"Why would the Argent Tournament set up camp in Icecrown, at the back end of the glacier? This makes absolutely no sense to me. Crystal Song seems way better: no quests there, plenty of space, and much better weather!"
The Argent Crusade already has a presence in Icecrown, and tournament or not, their goal is to fight the Scourge. Some of Tournament dailies still involve suppressing Scourge activity, and the purpose of the tournament is to rally the major players to Icecrown. Story-wise, it absolutely belongs in Icecrown. Crystalsong definitely needs something going on there, but the Argent Tournament is not what should be there. Although the Argent Tourney does send you on some daily quests down there.
I think they rather enjoy Crystalsong being quiet and serene despite all the little odd things going on in there. Maybe we'll see something else in there later.
Pequod asked...
"What's the consensus on attacking opposite faction players who come to our capital to fish? Both Horde and Alliance have locations where this occurs and it seems there is a daily discussion when someone decides those anglers need to be eliminated."
I suspect the folks who protest the most are themselves fishermen trying to keep things safe when they run off to enemy territory to bag that big fishing achievement. I don't see that as a bad thing but is it truly wrong to attack the enemy when he/she makes themselves available for slaughter? What's your take?"
I leave fishermen alone, personally. I don't expect the other side would extend the same courtesy to me when I go to Orgrimmar, but I do try to leave fishermen alone in Ironforge so they can get their achievement. If they try to go exploring, they're gonna die. If they keep themselves by that little lake in the back of the city? I'll leave them alone.
I don't throw a hissy fit if someone else kills people in Ironforge (I'm Alliance, if you haven't noticed) but it does bother me a little. They're just fishing, you know? There is the whole... the factions are at war thing going on, though. I'm not going to be one of those people that pretends PvP doesn't belong in WoW, because it absolutely does.
I don't kill them while they're fishing, I don't like other people killing them, but I won't crucify someone for doing it.
Solas asked...
"With the ammo stacking change in 3.1 and haste being added to the hunter skill Auto-Shot, what happens to existing quivers and ammo pouches? Do they automatically disappear from inventory? As a Leatherworker, I am especially curious about unsold quivers and pouches I have sitting in the bank. Is there a WoW precedent for this kind of change? Thanks."
They're just going to become oversized bags that you can only put ammo in. They won't be totally useless if you want to carry unholy amounts of ammunition with you all of the time, but for the regular person they're not something you'll keep around. They won't disappear, though. They'll still be around. Just less useful.
Sheppard asked...
"I ve been asking around and getting mixed answers from different people. Does jumping up and down during a boss fight effect your chance to dodge, block, parry, etc?"
As long as you're facing the mob(s) and continuing to do everything you would normally do, then no. It shouldn't have an impact on any of those things. Movement, jumping, all of that stuff has no impact on your avoidance as long as you're still in the right place positionally. If you end up exposing your back to a mob when you're jumping around like a kangaroo, then you might have a problem. Otherwise? You're fine. I bunnyhop constantly when I'm tanking Keristrasza in the Nexus. No problems.

Or you could just do it during the Wrath Gate quest line and not have to worry about it...also that a good time to do the low level instance in Ogri. Just a thought.

I feel kinda bad for the Horde, though. There's just nowhere to hide in Ironforge. When I fished up Old Crafty in Orgrimmar I just hid in the waterfall and wasn't ganked a single time.
rosencratz Apr 3rd 2009 3:50AM
If they didn't want fishermen ganked they shouldn't have given achievements for killing players in home cities imo. :)
Why is opposing faction achievements more important than mine? *Melts fisherface*

About jumping, it can be bad. Jumping in and of itself isn't bad, but the fact that the server doesn't update your position until you land means that something like jumping out of a void zone is a bad idea. You're not actually out of danger until you land.
"Look, I was totally out of that void zone!"
No, you landed your jump outside the void zone. According to the server, you were in the void zone and dead before you landed no matter what your screen says.

Does the mechanic work the same way for the mage spell blink?
Kryxx Apr 2nd 2009 4:19PM
Is there a way to lower spell effect detail even lower than the slider allows? I know the boundaries for certain things can be manipulated using /commands. AOE in 25 mans is a nightmare because of spell effects...
elvendude Apr 2nd 2009 4:22PM
I have a not bad system. It was pretty good a year or two ago. Even so, I still look at my feet when I'm healing some even 10-man fights. (Particularly Loetheb. If I miss a tick on my timer due to my FPS tanking, we all die.)
uncaringbear Apr 3rd 2009 1:13AM
I wish there was a way to simply turn off all the spell effects. As a melee, boss fights can be nightmarish in 25mans, with all the colours and AOE effects exploding around you. My system, while not cutting edge, is not horrible, but I still get lags and stutters in 25mans. The eye candy is excessive and adds minimal value to the game, other than to slow it down.

Every once in a while I'll take my NE Warrior and hang out on top of the AH in Ogrimaar. My half-life is usually measured in seconds, but sometimes they'll leave me alone for as long as five minutes.
I never fight back, and usually just /dance with anyone who attacks me. And every once in a while a Hordie will Mind-Control me to try and protect me from the others. =)
I never get mad at being killed though; I wouldn't be hanging out there if getting ganked bothered me.
Firestride Apr 2nd 2009 5:16PM
Half of you disappears every couple seconds? That's weird. Or maybe you just don't know what half-life means.
NoTomorrow Apr 2nd 2009 5:30PM
@fire
Way to be a dick. He's making a joke, what he means is that half of his health disappears in seconds.
Jeez, some people have no sense of humor.
Jon Do Apr 3rd 2009 8:40AM
How do you get on top of the AH?
afkautoshot Apr 2nd 2009 4:23PM
The best method is remove all clothing before fishing in other faction's capital cities...
That's what I do :-)
Irshalthra Apr 2nd 2009 4:57PM

Here is my question,
Is the same thing as the ammo bags gonna happen to the warlock soul shard bags since they are upping the base number of shards to 32, which is the biggest bag you can get right now for them. Is so, why make a pattern for the bag available only after grinding out Ebon Hand rep?
AyaJulia Apr 2nd 2009 7:11PM
"upping the base number of shards"? You imply that they're increasing your shard capacity, when they're in fact capping it. There's no reason to have a bag bigger than 32; you can't have more than 32 shards after 3.1.
And why -shouldn't- the pattern be a rep grind item? All of the other large bags are. -.-
Balius Apr 2nd 2009 9:51PM
The plan for warlocks is that they will still need the soul bag, but drain soul will have a chance on tick to create a soul shard even if the enemy doesn't die. Also, the soul shards will be unique 32, so your bags won't fill with the items.
rosencratz Apr 3rd 2009 3:58AM
No. The soul shard changes are a bit mysterious at this stage. Before 3.1 GC said that SS changes were coming and there were two forms we could see it in, one was a small change that just tweaked the system and one was a total overhaul that could be very fun, potentially, but complicated to pull off.
We don't know which one we've gotten in 3.1 but it seems like a tweak to me. Whether we'll get further changes is a mystery but it's possible.
As long as it's NOT stacking shards.
Interesting/fun game mechanics > More storage space!
