Phat Loot Phriday: Jaina's Signet Ring

Name: Jaina's Signet Ring (Wowhead, Thottbot, Wowwiki)
Type: Uncommon Ring
Damage/Speed: N/A
Attributes:
- +3 Strength, +7 Stamina
- This ring is actually more notable for what it isn't than what it is. It's more or less the final reward in the Missing Diplomat questline, which spans ten Alliance levels from 28 to 38. And yet, after traversing half the world and uncovering a gigantic mystery, all you get is some XP, a nice chunk of reputation, and this little ring. Unfortunately, most players are of the opinion (with good reason, if you ask me), that a piddly little ring like this probably isn't worth all of the trouble. This is probably one of the quests Jeff Kaplan would probably say wasn't quite done correctly.
- But it is a fun quest, and it does have some nice significance to the lore: it basically covers the backstory of why the King of Stormwind was (previously) missing from the game. And it brings you into direct contact with none other than Jaina Proudmoore, a fan favorite character who's got quite a backstory with our current Dark Lord (and who we'll probably be seeing more of soon). Which begs the question: why is Jaina's ring, a signet ring of a legendary Mage, equipped with Strength and Stamina? Maybe that's why she's giving it away to you.
- This actually used to be the last reward in the Missing Diplomat quest, but actually, with the Dustwallow revamp a few patches ago (which I'm playing right now and which you should check out if you ever level a character from 30-40 again), there is more to the story. After this quest, you move on to another chain, which eventually reveals exactly who the Missing Diplomat was and how exactly he went missing. That culminates in a better final scene with Jaina, and a few much nicer rewards.
- But those of us who leveled up before the revamp will always remember Jaina's Signet Ring, one of the biggest let-downs in quest rewards so far. If you happen to come upon it with your alt, you might as well keep it around as a reminder for Blizzard on how do to quests incorrectly.
Getting Rid of It: Rings are still somewhat hard to come by at this level, so if you don't have one on already, you might as well equip it. But if you're a caster and you already have two rings, you can sell it back to vendors for 46s 30c. And it'll disenchant into a Vision Dust or a Greater Mystic Essence.

You're crazy! This quest was not a letdown, it's one of my favorite questlines from classic WoW. It's worth a ton of experience, the lore is excellent and you get a lot of gold from it. I've done it on every single alliance character I've levelled up because it's so good.

He said that the reward as a letdown, not the questline.

The quest was fun, but my big question was why is a mage giving me a ring with strength and stamina?
Its another example of Blizzard really not knowing anything about their game actually works I think.

Probably re-gifting a present she got from a lover whose class is more appropriate for that ring (like, y'know, an enhancement shaman....).

You never know what stats Farseers need now do you?

Her father was an admiral. Maybe the admiral class uses strength and stamina. Otherwise, Jaina's a noob mage. Of course, given how she acts in EVERY single Warcraft encounter, WC3 and WoW, I would say she is.

Re-read the article. He was saying that the loot (the ring in this case) was a let down, not the questline itself. He even says it's worth doing simply because of the lore. Learn to read before you judge, eh?

actually.. this used to be a very nice ring back in the days of vanilla WoW
now...not so much

Exactly. A lot of people forget that gear used to be phased in as you leveled. If I remember right, this was the first ring reward I ever got. Like the Argent Dawn Trinket was the first trinket ever received.
JewelCrafters and PvP twink trinkets etc didn't always exist.
At the time, you took any and every ring you could get even if it was 'meant' for your class.

You'd think Jaina would have enough bling bling stored away that she could offer up a better reward. She's just being stingy.
Kaeona Apr 3rd 2009 6:59PM
Shhhhhhh!
She just didn't have time to find something better. She's trying to think!
After all, all she wanted to do was to study.

Hahahaha well done!

I believe the last quest, gave the ring, and a 1gold reward, and if I remember correctly, that was the first quest i completed that gave me gold, and not silver!

I remember this quest. When I finally completed it on my first toon, as soon as I saw Jaina I took a screenshot. Thought something epic was going to happen.
Then I got the ring. I scrunched my face, but equipped it anyway. Felt nice to wear, if only because of the source.
But it is pretty awful. =P

I love this quest chain lol, it's so long ! There is so much xp involved and so much gold i don't even remember the ring. Done it many times on different toons, but i specifically remember being in awe at the 1g 50s reward.

Well if you want to consider the stats on the ring from a lore stand point one possibility could be that since its a Signet Ring it could be for her family, Proodmoore. Since a signet ring was usually a ring with a families crest engraved on it. Usually it was pressed into wax on a sealed letter to indicate authenticity and importance. Her dad, and I assume brother though little info on him exists, are fighter-y types the stats could make sense from that standpoint.

If I remember right... this ring originally also had a clickable divine shield type effect. (with a fairly long cooldown) It was removed, though, due to it being a bit too powerful. :) It may have been in beta... I forget.

It is a let down and definitely obsoleted by Jewelcrafting. Sadly like many things in classic WoW, blizzard will never revise it.
