Another wish-list for Engineers
Earlier this week, we discussed the state of the Engineering profession. Most notably it seems that while Blizzard is currently happy with Engineering and has no near-future plans to make any hefty changes, many Engies in the community are as frustrated as ever. The profession is probably the most imaginative of them all, and really lends itself to fantasy brainstorming. This type of wish-list formation is a common topic on Engineering forums and blogs, and even here at WoW Insider.
If you've been following any of these posts, or would like to start, check out Kagura's Engineering Idea Bank for WoW Engineers. It specifically addresses some of the demands/issues made in the forum post that sparked our examination earlier in the week. While I did conclude that Engineering does seem to be on par with most other professions, there is no reason that we can't dream.

Played wow four years, took up engineering 4 mins ago. Nothing can go wrong right?
Ametrine Apr 5th 2009 12:14PM
The thread you reported on earlier?

It's more than doubled in size since then.
While Blizzard may be happy with the current state of Engineering - they're clearly alone in that opinion.

Just gave a quick glance at the linked list. I especially like the idea of engineers being able to make portable anvils/forges.
Lemons Apr 6th 2009 3:20AM
You engineers won't rest until you can make complete portable towns..
sickbox Apr 6th 2009 4:01AM
How could an engineer rest at a time like this anyway? We should probably be able to create mounts for our engineering pets too... or something else far fetched.
Rylka Apr 6th 2009 8:18AM
Actually, I'm a tailor/enchanter. It just seemed to me that the trend in WOW seems to be away from professions being tied down to hard locations.
To quote Kagura from the linked engineering brainstorming list:

I really like how a lot of tools now have been consolidated into one or two item slots. It's pretty cool! These tools include a Bladed Pickaxe, Hammer Pick, and the Gnomish Army Knife.
But how about utilities that are normally stationary-- in other words, stuff like Anvils and Forges?
There are a few of stationary objects that are in the game that are currently utilized, or used to be utilized, for crafting purposes. These include ...
* Alchemist: Alchemy Lab (depreciated support as of 3.0.8)
* Blacksmiths and Engineers: Forge, Anvil
* Inscription: Lexicon of Power (depreciated support in 3.1 Ulduar)
* Tailoring: Mana Loom (depreciated due to higher level gear)
* Cooking: Camp Fire
There are also some specialty objects such as the Enchanted Anvil in Dalaran, The Black Anvil and The Black Forge in Blackrock Depths, and various different locations in Dragonblight where Tailors go to make their specialized cloths.
The only stationary crafting objects left that appear of any use are the Anvil and Forge. It does make some kind of sense-- how weird would it look if a Blacksmith could smelt and forge pieces of metal without the use of an Anvil and Forge?
However, some people have suggested that Engineers should be able to create a portable Anvil and Forge should the occasion arise. The benefits of a portable smithing station would be wonderful! These would include shorter trips between crafting and the Auction House, as well as the creation of Engineering supplies when needed.
/end quote
Of course we can already make campfires wherever we want without mats thanks to gnomish army knives, and come 3.1 we won't even need those anymore.
If engineers can create vendors, repairbots, and the like, portable forges/anvils doesn't seem that far fetched.
Spazmoosifer Apr 6th 2009 1:31PM
Even though I am a Tailor/Enchanter, I think that the portable anvil would be a great idea. The only stipulation that I would make is that it should act like the portable mailbox, where it has a long cooldown (8hrs?).
That would make the portable anvil useful, when you need to make something really quick (middle of naxx for some reason) while not eliminating the need for the anvils in the towns.

ilvl213 goggles is all i ask for at this point. Definitly dont have to be best in slot, just goggles, any goggles. Can even be a drop in ulduar, just like sunwell.
Ive been an engineer since day 1, and am my realm first 450 engineer, and even though im not an RPer, i just cant bring myself to wear anything besides my Weakness Spectralizers (as good as the rogue t7 helm looks.). I havnt seen my toons eyes since he was able to wear Flying Tiger Goggles.
Glad the tinkers are geting some stats though, any is better than zero, but parachute > 22 agi.
Snaps Apr 5th 2009 12:23PM
Yeah, make that almost tripled.
Please read page 50 of our thread. It's one of the most important.

-----
Here's the most technological instance since Gnomer itself and this is all that we get. Let's not even talk about how non-engineers get a helicopter mount now too.
No reagents for scrapbot. FIXED!
No new goggles.
No clear superiority in our bop bonuses versus standard enchants.(tinkers).
No new reputation patterns.
No new/upgraded gadgets (MC hat, netomatic, world enlarger).
No fix for specialty switching.
No real difference between specialties at 80.
No new teleporter.
No new flares. (easily most important of all)
No disorient on grenades.
No new seaforium.
No engineer assistance on motorcycle.
No use for Indestructible Frame or Neo-Dynamic Gear Assembly.
No new pet/mechanical dragonling.
No connection to siege vehicles (repair or bonus damage).
No point.
How many of those points do you think will go unanswered in the patch or even the whole of the expansion? I'd wager an overwhelming percentage. I've been an engineer for almost four years now. I'm too wrapped up in it, I can't abandon the rare and no longer gainable recipes, to drop it at this point.
Make us competitive, make us useful, just make us no longer a joke. Please.
Vaglas Apr 5th 2009 12:30PM
How about they add a new pet called "QuestGlider" that latches itself to your toon's head and plays the game for you
redielin Apr 5th 2009 12:31PM
What I would like to see from engineering is for it to stop being usable in arenas.
I'm a Discipline Priest. It feels like I am forced into engineering if I want to be competitive. I suppose I don't mind the tinkers, those are fine, and would be very nice if I were actually an engineer.
I've put a lot of work into my current professions, and it feels like I have to go to engineering if I want to be able to play a priest in arenas, especially for the GLG and the Nitro boosts.
Other professions give some pretty good benefits in terms of stats, trinkets, and gear. But they don't really significantly change your ability options.
I feel like my class is being balanced around a profession I don't want to take in pvp.
Tolden Apr 5th 2009 12:34PM
Well, you're in luck since the GLG damage was nerfed by 42% with a passive 1.83% crit tossed on it.
redielin Apr 5th 2009 12:38PM
Would you prefer things like the GLG still usable in arenas, but nerfed, or would you prefer to have the old GLG, but just can't use the on-use effect in arenas?
Ametrine Apr 5th 2009 1:25PM
The latter. Engineering has been nerfed far to much already from BC onwards, and of the few Engineers who do PVP, most of them only did so to get that trinket so they could abuse the high burst output in 2v2 fights.
Tolden Apr 5th 2009 7:25PM
@Kakistocracy;
You are a moron. Turn your helm graphic off it's such a huge deal for you. The point is that almost everything beats our bop goggles statwise including BOE items from blacksmithing.
I salute your jackassishness because there are so few people that could reach your level of douchebaggery.
Kakistocracy Apr 6th 2009 12:10AM
Tolden, would you kindly explain what you think you are arguing with me about? I said, "the major benefit from engineering is a cosmetic one, at the cost of stats."
And you call me a moron, adding, "The point is that almost everything beats our bop goggles statwise".
Now I don't know about you, but it sounds like I said that the stats are worse than the alternatives, and you said pretty much the same thing, so I'd like to know why you're trying to pick a fight, I mean really, what is this, third grade?
Also, doesn't replying to the wrong comment make your moron comment appear a bit misdirected?
Rilgon Apr 5th 2009 12:40PM
"While I did conclude that Engineering does seem to be on par with most other professions"
May I ask how you came to this conclusion without being paid off by Blizzard, being clinically insane, or being under the effects of hallucinogens?
Kakistocracy Apr 5th 2009 2:03PM
Maybe by playing something other than an engineer...
I guess if you're not really looking for anything from your profession other than a big hole into which you can throw money, leveling it is great. Currently, my mage gets the benefit of wearing the goggles rather than the awful hoods (with better states) that for reasons unknown change what my face looks like.
Tolden Apr 5th 2009 2:15PM
"Awful hoods" meaning blue or green items?
Any hat in even just Naxx10 will replace any of the goggles.
Kakistocracy Apr 5th 2009 3:58PM
Tolden, I know seven lines are a lot to read, but it shouldn't have been that hard to figure out what I was saying...
By "awful hoods" I am referring to ones like
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40339. Now here's the tricky part, so see if you can follow along, When I say that the "awful hoods" have better stats than the goggles, I mean that they have better stats than the goggles, a tough distinction, I know, but so read over it a couple times. Then I went on to explain that I was calling the a fore mentioned head wear awful, only on account of the bizarre way it distorts the faces, changing eye appearance and replacing beards with goatees, as if to say, the major benefit from engineering is a cosmetic one, at the cost of stats.
now that wasn't so hard, was it?
