I think that having an interest in WoW outside of just the game can make it less "nerdy." If your foolish roommates were being rational about it, what would they consider to be less "nerdy" - that you did a mindless grind in WoW for hours? Or that you instead read a book about it, thereby increasing your knowledge about the game-lore (which I'd say is just as acceptable as any other fantasy-universe) as well as an author's writing-style and your vocabulary?
