Are we being teased about the next expansion?

So there's been a feeling in the air lately that some of the blues have been in a bit of a teasing mood. Sure, that's not neccessarily new, but what is interesting is what exactly they may be teasing us about. For example, here's a recent post in which one Sulmus of Aerie Peak asks for the Greymane Wall to be opened. Zarhym soon jumps in to say that they would be "out of their mind" to open the wall... then follows up with random ellipses. To top it all off, Bornakk and Crygil jump in with silly punctuation of their own.
Now when Alex and I were discussing this the other day, Alex insisted that they were basically admitting that the Greymane wall would be opened, likely in conjunction with the next expansion. He says it's already in the planning stages, and the blues are just waving the knowledge tantalizingly out of sight because they're not allowed to officially announce it yet. Now, at first I wasn't really on board with it, but then I noticed another post Zarhym commented in.
Imani of Aerie Peak posted a thread with the aim of advocating for more Old World content along the style of the Un'goro detour or Stormwind Harbor in Wrath. With the Maelstrom, she said, Blizzard should focus on fleshing out different areas of the old world, such as Gilneas, Azshara, and Grim Batol, weaving them in with new expansion content to give a sense of continuity. It's certainly a good idea to begin with, but what caught my eye is that Zarhym himself commented that it was a good post, thus surreptitiously tagging the thread with the air of officiality via blue text and providing a tacit endorsement of the idea.
Now of course, Zarhym's not a member of the dev team proper, and he could just simply be saying he thinks it's a cool idea (because it is), but considering his other post, I can't help but wonder if Alex had a point. Maybe these are ways to say, "Yeah, we're headed to the Maelstrom and filling out Azeroth for the next expansion, but we can't tell you that officially, so here, have some oblique references and teasing!"
It could all be wishful thinking, sure. Maybe the blues are just having some fun and commenting on some cool ideas, but still, I'm thinking I'd put good odds on a Maelstrom-related announcement at the next BlizzCon. Time will tell, but I'm starting to feel sort of optimistic.

Meh, it's a discussion about something other than how underpowered mages are or how rogues need nerfed. As far as I'm concerned, that makes it one of the best topics about World of Warcraft ever made on any site.

This list has been posted in late 2007. It nailed down deathknights and all the zones by the letter. I wouldn't be surprised if this actually holds true, even if it (back then) sounded simply like someone needed attention. Also, it frequently got deleted whenever postet in the official forums, which (kind of) gives it credibility.

And by late 2007, a lot of that information was readily available from a whole lot of different sources. I think someone's pulling your leg.

Also, I've seen this "list" before and it's different every time someone posts it somewhere. Blizzard may have had an idea to go to Northrend while they were working on TBC, but they sure as hell didn't have it worked out down to the zone. The way Northrend is structured is a hell of a lot different from Outlands, and that's not a coincidence. They learned from TBC and now have two entry level zones and a fairly free-flowing progression. Do you think entire servers would have been pouring into Hellfire on launch day if they'd already had Northrend planned out that much? Hell no.
Also, I've been a part of every beta, and I sure as hell didn't find any list of possible expansions in MY files in '04. This guy is full of shit, and so is his list.

Whether or not these old-world areas are involved in the next expansion, we're certainly being teased with the possibility.
engine Apr 6th 2009 7:25PM
I think you're reading a lot into this. -_-;
And does anyone honstly think they're already deep enough into a new expansion to know what new playable races they'll have? We haven't even had a content patch for Wrath yet, I think we're getting a little ahead of our selves.
Well, you're getting ahead of yourself. I'm right on target. /flex

They still need to come up with a Hero Class for the new expansion.
I'm going to regurgitate what I just said on the forums and say Pirates, for the Maelstrom.
All-race-applicable, Leather Class, a Beer bar for resources.
Perfect.

An Archdruid class would go well with an Emerald Dream expansion. Emerald Dream would also go hand-in-hand with adding more content to Aszhara, Moonglade, and Mt. Hyjal (not the CoT raid but the actual zone).
Admittedly I have no idea how Gilneas would be connected... that actually would have been more suited to the theme of the current expansion. If they're going to do anything with Gilneas, I'd expect to see it in a 3.x patch BEFORE the next expansion.

Brewmaster.
Hybrid DPS, Tank.
Cloth armor.
Three specs: Drunken, Discipline, and Martial.
Class-specific profession: (like poisons or runeforging) Brewing.
Different brews give you different buffs, much like DK runeforging, rogue poison or shammy weapon enhancements.

Maelstrom:
New race: Goblins. You decide at character creation what faction to align with, but both Horde and Alliance goblins could share the same leveling areas. They'd have ogre mounts, which would be awesome.
New hero class: Tinker. Combines aspects of the Goblin Tinker and Goblin Alchemist hero classes from WC3, so it'd be a DPS/healer hybrid. Probably only available to goblins and gnomes, but maybe one other Horde race.

Can't do the emerald dream without unlocking most of the current world as it is, can you? The emerald dream is the ultimate peak, azeroth unchanged by *Anything* you can't go to gilneas in the emerald dream, phase out, and just be on the other side of the wall now can you
Gary Apr 6th 2009 7:52PM
Chances are that it's going to be the Emerald Dream, because Richard A Knaak is writting a tie-in book about it next year.
Makes sense to release an Emerald Dream book at the same time as an E.D. expansion. Sure Christie Golden's doing the same with her Arthas book.

Mendorian, that post is all well and great, except wasn't Wrath of the Lich King announced at Blizzcon 2007? Which was in August, I remember because the announcement came shortly before my birthday.
That post was made after Wrath's annoucement, so yeah...I'd say the Outland and Northrend areas would have already been revealed. Someone had a little too much time on their hands to think up all of that.
Braundo Apr 6th 2009 7:41PM
I hope they at least add Kul Tiras and Tol Barad to the map again, if not make them accessible to players. They've just vanished!

Along with "What Republican will be running against Barack Obama in 2012?", file this question in a drawer of questions I don't want to think about for a long time.

"Which" Republican.
ObiChad Apr 6th 2009 7:49PM
I kinda got the feeling they were hinting at this as well, but it's also feasible a few of them have been having too much booze at work.
Regarding Maelstrom vs Emerald Dream, would it be feasible to do both at once? Essentially have the expansion focus on the night elves and the split they took around the time of the Sundering?
Mr. Crow Apr 6th 2009 7:53PM
I think there's a lot of evidence to support that the Maelstrom will be next on the list of Special Things To Do. The very very old developer map from the original Collector's DVD (http://www.wowwiki.com/Image:Goblin_area_situated_on_the_map.jpg) shows a numerical progression that matches (roughly) with how we've been advancing through a lot of the content. Note on that picture, that Undermine and Naz'jatar (under the Maelstrom) are the last numbers listed.
What's interesting to me is the fact that Outland isn't referenced on this map at all, and elements such as the Azuremyst Isles and Quel'Danas are missing. Looking at the history of WoW's development as a whole, it's interesting that Naxxramas was the ultimate content planned in the classic game, and hints heavily at progressing to Northrend to take down the Lich King after defeating Kel'Thuzad. However, the Burning Crusade came out instead, introducing new landmasses that didn't exist and sidetracking us away from Northrend for 10 levels.
Anyhow, back to point: the Maelstrom is one of the few places that existing lore deals with that hasn't yet been addressed completely. Queen Azshara and the Naga (with the exception of Vashj's naga working with the Illidari) have operated independently of pretty much everything else for a good chunk of time now. Gilneas, Kul Tiras, Zandalar and the goblin homeland of Undermine are also on this list.
It's not a matter of "will we see the Maelstrom in the next expansion?" It's a matter of "What will we see WITH the Maelstrom in the next expansion?"
And the big question to ask after we know the locales for the third expansion? "Where the hell do we go NOW?"
K-OSS Apr 6th 2009 9:07PM
However, the numbers for the Undermine and Nazjatar are not following Northrend, therefore this white board drawing clearly indicates that the next expansion will introduce the new continent of Kalimdor (no. 5, following Northrend's no. 4).
I wouldn't be surprised if this expansion also included new playable races like Orcs and Trolls, maybe Night Elves, but that may be pushing it.
Though I do hope to see the Undermine someday. Horde and Alliance be damned, my sword is for goblins!

On an unrelated note, if 3.1 were really hitting tomorrow, would we see the devs on the forums?
