Are we being teased about the next expansion?

So there's been a feeling in the air lately that some of the blues have been in a bit of a teasing mood. Sure, that's not neccessarily new, but what is interesting is what exactly they may be teasing us about. For example, here's a recent post in which one Sulmus of Aerie Peak asks for the Greymane Wall to be opened. Zarhym soon jumps in to say that they would be "out of their mind" to open the wall... then follows up with random ellipses. To top it all off, Bornakk and Crygil jump in with silly punctuation of their own.
Now when Alex and I were discussing this the other day, Alex insisted that they were basically admitting that the Greymane wall would be opened, likely in conjunction with the next expansion. He says it's already in the planning stages, and the blues are just waving the knowledge tantalizingly out of sight because they're not allowed to officially announce it yet. Now, at first I wasn't really on board with it, but then I noticed another post Zarhym commented in.
Imani of Aerie Peak posted a thread with the aim of advocating for more Old World content along the style of the Un'goro detour or Stormwind Harbor in Wrath. With the Maelstrom, she said, Blizzard should focus on fleshing out different areas of the old world, such as Gilneas, Azshara, and Grim Batol, weaving them in with new expansion content to give a sense of continuity. It's certainly a good idea to begin with, but what caught my eye is that Zarhym himself commented that it was a good post, thus surreptitiously tagging the thread with the air of officiality via blue text and providing a tacit endorsement of the idea.
Now of course, Zarhym's not a member of the dev team proper, and he could just simply be saying he thinks it's a cool idea (because it is), but considering his other post, I can't help but wonder if Alex had a point. Maybe these are ways to say, "Yeah, we're headed to the Maelstrom and filling out Azeroth for the next expansion, but we can't tell you that officially, so here, have some oblique references and teasing!"
It could all be wishful thinking, sure. Maybe the blues are just having some fun and commenting on some cool ideas, but still, I'm thinking I'd put good odds on a Maelstrom-related announcement at the next BlizzCon. Time will tell, but I'm starting to feel sort of optimistic.

I think we'll see speculation every Tuesday for months until it finally does drop. Remember the fever pitch for 3.0.8 for example, let alone 3.0. There will probably be lots of "It's this week" speculation until it finally hits.
I hope I'll be employed when it drops though so I can start playing the game again :(

This would explain the increase to water breathing and also the fact that mounts, can now swim in water.
read between the lines and the answer to the next expansions is there. I'm putting 50g on Maelstrom as the next big thing.

I remember back in 2008 someone had up a video on YouTube about the expansion after WotLK. They said that the expansion would be set in the ocean "east" of the Eastern Kingdoms.
Got a laugh out of it, but the Maelstrom kind of interests me as does the Emerald Dream. Oh well, patience is a virtue.

I really want to ride my aquatic mount around the new neutral city, Nazjatar! Well, just an idea. But seriously, an underwater naga city would be awesome, and a Maelstrom expansion would certainly include it.

Now if it's Maelstrom that's going to be the next XP...then they've been dropping hints about it since Vanilla WoW. Where they posted an increase of Murlcos on Azeroth shores due to some disturbance in the Great Sea on WoW website. (I'm not sure if that is still floating around or not currently.)
Also before the announced Wrath expansion...there where number of distraction "leaks" about Maelstrom...to throw us off the LK...
...this has lead to my wild specualtion that they have been working on Maelstrom for a very long time, even before TBC. But I could be wrong....and reading all too much into this as well.

Hmm so water breathing increased, mounts can swim, special sea turtle mount and stormwind now has that HUGE harbor with big arse boats. Yeah, i'd say Mael.

Guess we'll find out at Blizzcon!

Isn't the Maelstrom supposed to cause the end of Azeroth? Wouldn't it make sense to keep it for last then? Say the final boss of the previous expansion causes the Maelstrom to quicken, leaving a small amount of time left to fix it. The true final boss of Azeroth? APOCALYPSE ITSELF.
Sweet, sweet watery death.

"Are we being teased about the next expansion?"
Maybe, but I'm more inclined to believe we're being teased, period.

In before another EPIC world event that is unappreciated by any number of giant babies. "Stop turning teh auctioneers into zombies! I'm trying to sell mah green gems!!1!"
Balius Apr 7th 2009 8:59AM
If the event was optional, I'd agree with you. But when the whole game comes to a stop for some extremely limited PVP, it loses much of the charm.
Imagine how epic an event it would be if an auction window randomly popped up every few minutes and wasn't able to be removed except by killing yourself. That's about what it felt like for those of us who find PVP tedious and boring.
A friend of mine was just starting the game, but got frustrated and quit because she couldn't get any of her quests done. Now one of the things I actually enjoy about the game, playing it with friends, is denied to me because of the zombie event. I feel more than justified in saying that the event was a failure from my perspective.

Thanks for giving a living example to my point.

@Balius
Guess we found the baby ;)
Anyways, I'm all for completely disrupting the game experience for a week or two between expansions. It's not like half the stuff you do actually matters, and it matters even less during those transitions. Next time I say raze all the capitol cities and make us run from zone to zone! Level 80 elites in Goldshire!
Iwanttobeasleep Apr 6th 2009 10:12PM
I, for one, am totally fine with either. Although I am not looking forward to lots of swimming.
Although it does interest me that I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention Azshara in the list of bosses whenever someone says that killing Arthas/Illidan would be the end of the story.
Willian Apr 6th 2009 10:25PM
nah.. we can kill arthas, but we have sargeras, kiljaeden, the whole black dragonflight and deathwing, the elemental plane and the last but no the least: we need to retake gnomeregan. ohh, wut?
Willian Apr 6th 2009 10:18PM
I would love to see moar demons in an outlandish style.
but.. the next exp will be maelstrom. =O
it's time for a real goblin city. :)
Palatel Apr 6th 2009 11:01PM
When will people learn that the Emerald Dream couldn't be a continent because it is geographically EXACTLY THE SAME AS AZEROTH. I really wouldn't want to just run thru a zone that is just an alternative reality (essentially what the dream is) to boring old Loch Modan.
kabshiel Apr 7th 2009 12:09AM
It wouldn't actually have to be the size of actual Azeroth. They could just say that the Nightmare ate up most of the Emerald Dream, Nothing-style.
Gulbrandt Apr 7th 2009 1:52AM
The Emerald Dream is Azeroth as if its sapient races had not existed/developed. I imagine it would resemble Azeroth pre-Sundering. There would be no Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, or Northrend--and thus no Maelstrom--but all one giant continent. The Maelstrom was wrought by high elven hands, in particular Azshara. If there had been no Maelstrom, there would be no need for the Emerald Dream.
Interestingly, while there are four Great Trees in Azeroth (Duskwood (Twilight Grove), Feralas (Dream Bough), Hinterlands (Seradane), Ashenvale (Bough Shadow)), there is a fifth Great Tree in Northrend: Crystalsong Forest (The Great Tree). Unlike the other four, there is no portal and it is not being guarded by green dragons, but all Great Trees are saplings of The World Tree, Nordrassil.
Very interesting, indeed.

They started on the next expansion over a year ago and began the heavy groundwork around December. The room literally has those fingerprint and retina scanners you see in movies.
As for the expansion, a lot of you won't be too surprised.
