What's the lore behind the Argent Tournament? Granted, I'm not on the PTR, but right now it seems to be just some random thing Blizzard tossed in to keep people interested. I mean, the Argent Crusade MUST have their hands full with the Lich King, so is it REALLY that prudent to be throwing a big party in the heart of his kingdom?

They're essentially war games. The crusade needs to find more bodies, GOOD fighters to assist them in their mission against the Lich King and the Scourge. It's like... having a gladiatorial pit, and drafting the ones that do really well into your army.

It still seems completely trivial and un-Argent Crusade like. I was under the impression that the Argent Crusade accepted the help of all those willing. And a ton of quests and NPCs all suggest that the Argent Crusade thinks that the fighting between the Horde and the Alliance is bad enough, why would they encourage fighting between cities of the same faction?

Having tooled around a bit on the PTR, particularly with the Argent Tournament, it would seem that the Argent Crusade are using the tournament as a morale boost, and as a way to allow combat between factions that doesn't result in the slaughter of valuable fighters.None of the fighting at the tournie is to the death. There are rules, and there are equalizers involved - everyone is on even footing, and the champions that rise are doing so through their own tenacity, not through outnumbering, outgearing, or ambushing foes. There's also a good chance that the AC are using this as an opportunity to train the forces of the Horde and the Alliance in new forms of combat - some of the dailies involve taking your lance, riding forth to the Court of Bones, and mowing down the Scourge using mounts and lances. It's also a grand way to keep eyes on Icecrown, even as players turn their raiding motivations towards Ulduar, where the Lich King has no (observable) influence. Wonderful move, gameplay-wise. Imagine if the Isle of Quel'Danas had been implemented and constructible before Magister's Terrace or Sunwell were actually released, so that as raiders were still working their way through Hyjal and Black Temple, the average player could be paving the way to greater victories, and advancing the story themselves. The Argent Tournament is sort of like that.Hope that sheds a little Light for you.
