Breakfast Topic: Does the guild recruitment channel work?
Many guilds recruit rather religiously, often having a couple people assigned to constantly ensure there's an adequate number of people to run dungeons, raids, and PvP teams. There are essentially four ways that people recruit. The first way is through the official forums, both via the individual realm forums and the multi-realm guild recruitment forum. Often times this means making a detailed and professional looking post and ensuring that it's bumped to first page of the forum several times a day.
The second way is through unofficial sites and forums. The process is similar to recruiting on the official forums, but recruitment generally is more directed towards the site's (and ideally the guild's) audience. For instance the guild recruitment forums on MMO-Champion are a great place to find hard core raiding guilds. Our Guildwatch column is another great tool.
The third way is through direct friend to friend recruitment. "I know a great Mage, even though she often likes to steal aggro and tank for a bit," I say to my recruitment officers. They go and grab the mage based on my recommendation. Whole guilds can be staffed like that.
Finally, the fourth way to recruit people is via the guild recruitment channel in-game. This is the channel where people spam their short recruitment messages in order to get people's attention in hopes they'll initiate further conversation or go to the guild's website.
I've used the guild recruitment channel once when it first came out and got absolutely no results. After that I've never used it again. I've seen some friends recently use it for their guild, and they too are not getting any good results. After some discussion with them it got me thinking about this on wider terms. It could be that the server they're on doesn't respond well to the channel, or it could be the channel is just a waste of virtual space.
The readership here at WoW Insider is very diverse. We've got the most casuals of the casuals and the hardest of the hard cores here reading and participating in the site every day. So I want to ask all of you, o' dear readers, does the guild recruitment channel work?

I think the general opinion among the WoW population is that guilds that advertise in-game don't work out in the long run. You are expected to make a topic on the realm forums and advertise your guild there and/or make a topic on the Guild Recruitment forums along with the various fan site forums.
That being said, I don't think I have ever read a single line of text in the Guild Recruitment channel in-game. People generally just use trade chat because it is more accessible to everyone and I think they hope to catch the eye of someone who is already in a guild.

Agreed Knob
It has a purpose , but I guess people figure that general and trade chat are more accessible to people.

well, true, but my guild ha lasted through this expansion, we occasionally spam info in trade, but i know the spammers ignore you, until you go to the guild website. most of our recruitment is done through picking up people that pug with us, especcially if they get loot. we did make a post on the realm forums at one point, but some disgruntled old guildies from our old server came and trolled it, and we just stayed away from the forums, besides, the forums are only for drama

This brings up my question, will a decent player look favorably on a guild that spams trade channel?
For me, the answer is definitely not. It seems like a complete waste of both parties. Good players aren't likely to take your guild seriously. Why would I want to play with a bunch of people who make the trade channel so annoying? And think about the players you're getting from the trade channel. They're just hoping into whatever guild is open. Do you think they'll be a valuable resource? Will they stick around, or jump on the next spam-ship that passes by?
Here's an idea. Try playing the game and meeting people. Your best human (and non-human) resources are made by interaction.

Most people on the servers I play on, use trade for recruiting and chat (and goldselling or scamming) so NO it doesn't work

The problem with guild recruitment channel is few people stay guildless. You default to the channel only if you are guildless; otherwise, you have to manually enter yourself. So, even if you are currently looking for a new guild, all you are seeing is the guild spam in trade and not guild recruitment. A small solution would be to make guild recruitment default to everyone and you'd have to manually remove yourself. I'm still all for some kind of in game message boards. >.

Seeing as how it all spills into trade channel anyways I'm gonna say no. /2 > All apparently.
Leandar Apr 8th 2009 8:05AM
Not on my realm anyway. All the guilds just spam /2 where everyone even with guilds can see.
VSUReaper Apr 8th 2009 12:10PM
Same thing on my realm. I have been guildless for several weeks now, and the only invites I get are from the leveling guilds that want to boast that they have a few level 80's in thier ranks.
As for the Realm forums, mine is a joke. All that happens there is we just flame each other for trolling. The second someone puts up a serious post (trading kills for Halaa tokens) it gets trolled by everyone and their granny.
I think that the best way to recruit is to spam a macro saying that a guild is recruiting, for more info go to the website. Actually recruiting via trade chat is kinda fail, especially when an entire recruitment macro pushes all the other chat off the screen.
Boocat Apr 8th 2009 8:06AM
Everyone uses the Trade Channel
Fenrix Apr 8th 2009 6:11PM
Except for everyone who leaves it and general by default, because the signal to noise ratio is no good.
Steelhand Apr 8th 2009 8:07AM
I've managed to get a couple people from GuildRecruitment. I refuse to spam trade chat, so those were about the only people I got from a random in game ad too.
AltairAntares Apr 8th 2009 8:09AM
I've never seen it used.

My guild has never used the Guild Recruitment channel (except at the very, very beginning when the guild was only a few close friends who had re-rolled on a new server), or even needed to make a post on the realm forums. We just get loads of guild members coming to the recruitment officer and telling him they have an awesome friend who wants to join.
So, from my limited perspective: the Guild Recruitment channel can work initially, if you're lucky with who replies. After that though, it's pretty useless.

In the darker days of my privious guild I spent a large amount of my wow time sitting in Shattrath recruting, most of the peeps you'll find that way are the sort that wont stick around long.
Actually, sitting in Shatt you get to know all the other Guidl recrutment officers sitting in Shatt, we ended up spending most of the recrutment promoting each other's guild more than our own. Infact, I would say the Guild recrutment chanel would be better used as a Guild relations channel, that's certainly what I used it for.
These days the guild is a much tighter bunch of people, and no longer recrute at all, why recrute members when you can recrute entire guilds in alliences?
Hiwa Apr 8th 2009 8:12AM
You mean standing by the bank in SW and yelling "join my new guild were nice healpfull friendly and have a cool looking tabard!" isn't considered real guild recruitment?
Catiya of Feathermoon Apr 8th 2009 8:14AM
Oh, don't forget the bank tab!
-_-
Elloën Apr 8th 2009 8:19AM
from /4 nothing and i mean nothing...
though i 'spammed' /1 several times and got: 72(!) members out off it... serious they where the first in my guild.
this was for : the spirit blade (disbanded last week - since i dont have the time anymore) and on the Ravenholdt server.
Anaughtybear Apr 8th 2009 8:19AM
I remember hearing about this once a long time ago. I didn't know it was real.

There is now a fifth more efficient way to recruit people:
