Tom Chilton on what's coming in patch 3.1
Our old friend Jessica Citizen has an interview up with Blizzard's Lead Game Designer on World of Warcraft, Mr. Tom Chilton. When Jeff Kaplan shipped off to other pastures in Blizzard to work on the new MMO, Chilton says he took over Kaplan's meetings, so right now, he is the flag leading the big ship of WoW. In the interview, he talks a bit about dual specs -- the system was originally planned to go in with the Lich King expansion, but it had to be pushed back to 3.1. And Chilton says he's already expecting to answer questions about triple specs at this year's BlizzCon, but of course, there's a balance there, as there has to be some choice on the part of the player as to what they decide to specialize in.He also talks about the Argent Tournament and Ulduar -- the Tournament, he says, will be a boon to solo players and players who enjoy daily questing, with the jousting minigame mixing things up a bit. And Ulduar's hard modes, as we've heard before, will bring raiding back to the difficulty that players expect. Chilton fesses up to an error that GC hinted at yesterday -- Blizzard nerfed PvP items at the same time that they made raiding more accessible, and the result is that people flocked to PvE while ignoring most of the PvP options. "We kind of over-solved the problem," he says.
In the end, he calls 3.1 "the most ambitious content patch we've ever done for World of Warcraft." We'll have to see -- given that Noblegarden should show up with the new patch, it ought to be implemented by at least April 26th.

3.1, as awesome as it will be, will be a NIGHTMARE.
Ulduar, Arena Season 6, Noblegarden, Children's Week, Argent Tournament.
So much to do.

So far from the actual tune on the forums "there is nothing to do" :]

That pic of Tom Chilton is win. lol

Staying away from the computer on patch day will probably save you the headache of crash day.
Bryonia Apr 8th 2009 10:10PM
Crash week, you mean. If not longer.

"We kind of over-solved the problem,"
Rephrased: In an attempt to fix a loose bolt, we accidently overtorqued it and twisted off the head. We now have a bigger problem than the one we started with. My bad, guys.

Holy crap, designers make mistakes. HOW DARE THEY?!
MechChef Apr 8th 2009 3:45PM
Mistakes are forgiven. But when an obvious screwup lingers on like a festering wound, I can't overlook that. That's apathy and incompetence.

You guys are a tad critical I think. Give the guy a break. I'm looking forward to 3.1 tremendously. Sure I've had my issues with WoW and getting it to work right after hours of downtime trying to solve an issue and installing using the online instal client, but lets face it. WoW is awesome, has been awesome, and if you don't think so, Stop playing.
I dare you.

You think we will see 3.1 on 4/14 or 4/21?

Nekked PvP/PvE seems the logical progression.

Jousting minigame? Sounds interesting...

"We kind of over solved the problem" No kidding. Most people I talk to have similar priorities to me (echo chamber? Maybe). They want to PvE. There was this huge bump in people doing PvP for what was perceived, rightly or wrongly, as an easy way to gear up for PvE. You did a few arena weeks and got the tier piece you needed. You didn't have to run the same lockout instance over three hours for maybe (MAYBE!) the token you wanted. Then you have to roll against every other member of your class and two others for it. That's only if if drops.
Basically, If you need legs, you do some arena and you get legs. No muss no fuss. And your warrior friend gets legs as well, without any "I stole the tank's off-set token" drama.
It is easy to get PvE gear from PvE and people are suddenly not wanting to play cooke-cutter FotM 2 GCD PvP? No kidding? Man, Arenas are a waste of time, and balancing PvE to feed them was a mistake.
Sure, I love a giant pink crown over my head for Hand of Protection, don't you?

Good summary. I honestly don't want PVP gear for PVE. Though I do admit I did use PVP swords for PVE. (nothing else though was good for my combat rogue) All I really want is to be able to do BG's for a lower-tier gear set without stepping into godawful arenas. Merely to be less squishy in BG's and WG.

My group is on a RP/PvP server because we like to PvP. But I've never liked the arenas and am very disappointed that it has become the entire focus of what PvP is supposed to be. I have no problem with folks who like that kind of thing. But I have no interest in tiny battlefields and egos. Give me a large battle and tactics any day. It also irks me that I'm at an increasing disadvantage no matter how much fighting I do in the BGs or defending my faction's cities as my PvP gear is tied to the arenas I'll never enter.
Back in Classic, I would cringe when we responded to a town raid and found a guild decked out in tiered gear. My group didn't get in to raid progression and a group of raiders would tear us to pieces on the battlefield (unless we had larger numbers and made good decisions).
TBC came out and we took to the PvE side with a vengeance – we weren't going to be out-geared again. PvP gear came in to play. That was great for us. But then starts the “honor farming.” It's not that I minded farmers so much as I despised those who came in to BGs to bot / idle their way to loot. Come and fight even if PvP isn't your thing. But sitting around taking up a slot that could be filled with someone at least TRYING to do something positive in the battle is a waste.
WotLK is almost there. We're doing a lot more PvE content than we used to because we're both in the habit and it's easier to do. And I really enjoy Wintergrasp – I wish there was more like that. Now if I could just get a decent weapon for recognition of my victories on the battlefield, I'd be set.

hey- i think they solved the problem just fine. I haven't done a single arena match since WotLK dropped, and I don;t miss it a bit. Not being forced into crappy PvP in order to get better goods than one can get by raiding is a beautiful thing!

I can't wait to see how many times the game will go down due to bugs galore once 3.1 is released.
crsh Apr 8th 2009 2:27PM
Wake me up when they come to their senses and fire Tom Chilton.
james Apr 8th 2009 2:46PM
Now I have a face to the name that is slowly killing WoW.

Is it just me or do they call every large content patch 'the most ambitious/massive/awesome/innovative patch we've ever done!'
