Nielsen: WoW is most played core game by 25-54 females

You can read the report in PDF form over here -- the chart above might be the most interesting piece of information, as it shows that though males still make up a huge part of the PC gaming audience, many of them have now moved on to consoles, and women (especially older women, over 25), during the last month of last year, are making up a huge audience for PC games. Later in the report, you can see what kinds of games women are really playing: Solitare, Freecell, Minesweeper, and all of those other little attention grabbers on every PC. But among those widespread casual games is our own World of Warcraft. And while the 25-52 male audience of 675, 713 for that game still remains larger than the female audience in the same demo, the ladies aren't far behind.
Neilsen also calculated some base stats for WoW, including the fact that 1.8 million unique people played the game, and the average time of gameplay per week was 744 minutes, just over 12 hours (slightly up from last year's average). Additionally, of those who play World of Warcraft, their second most-played game was Solitaire, followed by Warcraft III. Fascinating stuff. Remember that these are statistics, so they are more general trends than anything else, but it's definitely true World of Warcraft and PC gaming in general is no longer only the domain of the male demographic.

Mike...did you *actually* just refer to women over 25 as "older"??????
Quill2006 Apr 10th 2009 12:28AM
Oh my, I'm 25. I'm now officially older! ;) Older than the high school students, I suppose.
Mike, a little lesson on talking about ages, especially in reference to women: "Older" is never a good term. Also not old, ancient, decrepit, wrinkled, or any variation of those.
marla Apr 10th 2009 9:50AM
So, I see I wasn't the only one who noticed that too! 25 is older than what - 17? Jeez, I'm 25 and I'm still called a kid at work.
Mike Schramm Apr 10th 2009 12:00PM
Yes, women over 25 are older than those who are under 25, who in the past have been considered the primary female audience for videogames. I didn't mean it as a slight on anyone obviously.
That said, I'm 28, and I feel old. These crazy kids with their Twitter and their Miley Cyrus! Sometimes I wish we could all go back and just play our NES and drink Ecto-cooler Kool-aid.
Evi Apr 10th 2009 1:49PM
Haha, I was thinking the same thing Ilcyra. Way to make me feel old, jeez.
Khanmora Apr 11th 2009 11:21AM
I'm so glad someone else noticed this, I'm well past 25 but don't you dare call me an "older" woman :P

I'm the girl that's been one of the guys. I led a small ten man raiding guild in BC that was all guys (made it through ZA with a raiding core of 13), and really only raided with other women once wrath came out. I'm used to being treated as just one of the raid team, no different than the guys. They tell the same jokes and use the same language no matter if I'm around or not.
That said, in the guild we merged with, there are a few women that make me realize where the stereotype came from. Out of the six or so of us in the guild, two are like me and the other three are - lets just say horrible. I cringe when they come onto vent, they are stereotypically girlish and clueless (and one is just incompetent). The whole atmosphere of a raid changes when they are around.
I've healed, tanked, and mostly dps. I just want things to die and some nice loot. Stop yapping during the boss kills!
(I've met bad women and bad men. The women are often the more annoying of the two.)
nieboh Apr 10th 2009 1:22AM
I guess I am always hoping that the gender of the player won't matter. If a competent player makes a reasonable suggestion about strategy on vent, the pitch of their voice shouldn't make any difference in how the idea is received.
I think I'm rather fortunate (or just choosy). Ever since I joined my first raiding guild (defeat of Lucifron was a guild first on my first run with them), I've heard women in Teamspeak or Vent. On the whole, they weren't any worse or better than the men. I also think that their ideas were listened to with respect when they ventured to voice them.
But then again..."there are no women on the internet"
slimj091 Apr 10th 2009 1:32AM
i can just see it now a poorly animated canadian game company CEO demanding development start asap on Queef sister's: The video game.
may god help us. the females have begun their overthrowing of society!
gaga Apr 13th 2009 7:32AM
In our guild, there are lots of females! all active raiding warlocks and rogues are female as well as some of the offiers and healers :)
Tekoa Apr 10th 2009 4:16AM
and this matters because?
oh wait, that's right...
it don't.
flashoverride Apr 10th 2009 5:57AM
Of course women play more. because their husbands are, you know, at work. My wife has played for a little over a year - mybe 18 months - and now has 4 lvl 80s and *three times* my play time, and I started playing vanilla wow around 1.6.
Ilcyra Apr 10th 2009 8:14AM
This comment is full of fail. Your sample size=1 (your wife).
It's funny that on a website about a computer game, your idiotic ideas seem to be stuck in the 1950's!
marla Apr 10th 2009 3:23PM
This is also true in my house, although I guess it might seem outdated - and true for alot of the married gaming couples I know. Even the women with full-time jobs (such as myself) somehow find themselves with more time to putz around on games...
kunukia Apr 10th 2009 10:00AM
I am a 58 yo female. I play a lot, have many alts, any class that can be, is played as a female Dwarf, simply to avoid stupid comments and 'flirting'. OK, and because I love the accent and dance of the lady Dwarfs.
My druid spends all her time except when crafting in forms.
That said, my guild is about 50% female. There is certainly no problem in guild with sexism.
Haggie Apr 10th 2009 11:07AM
All six of the women that play online games, play WoW. And four of those "women" are dudes acting like women online...
cyndora Apr 10th 2009 11:36AM
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only female who was a little taken aback to find that over 25 is "older". :( QQ
Otherwise, interesting stuff. In our guild (all content cleared except 25-man Sarth3D) there are maybe 8 female players. And interestingly, I think 6 of them are healers primarily (as am I).
I have had a few experiences with inappropriate references or sexism, but generally, limited to PUGs and idiots, so I barely recall the incidents. I do try to stay away from the typical behaviors of a so-called "guild princess" though, which I think helps my guildies remember that I'm a player first, and a girl 2nd.
Asylan Apr 10th 2009 11:43AM
Yeah I'm 26, and I'm NOT old. Thanks, WoWInsider for that. I've been playing regularly since pre BC, but basically hit 60 right when it came out.
I'm getting tired of this social stigma that women don't like games, especially nerdier games like MMOs. We LOVE games. Give us a break, we played CS source, we played CS 1.0 even, we've been playing WoW, and it's not just because of our boyfriends.
Hell, I played DND before I started this game. And yes, it was always a huge thing when you went to your DND game with a ton of guys and they treated you almost as if you were a phenom, this diamond in the rough or something. I love these games, and will probably play them until I'm dragged away kicking and screaming "Get out of the fire!!"
Baluki Apr 10th 2009 1:19PM
I'm offended by the statement "moved on to consoles". Perhaps you meant "moved back to consoles". Gaming on a computer is definitely a step up from gaming on a console. :)
bipp Apr 11th 2009 12:49PM
/woot! I made the cut! And I thought I was rare.
54 yr. old woman!!!
