The Daily Quest: Dave Arneson rolls a 20

On a personal note, I ran into him around the age of 10 while in a St. Paul, Minnesota comic book store (Schinders, for those of you wondering). I was looking at Magic cards mainly, but he was browsing around and came over and talked with me when he saw I had turned my attention to one of the D&D 2e books. The clerk later told me as I was checking out who he was.
- Mystic Chicanery gives a good step-by-step guide on how to make voice overs for WoW movies.
- Teeth And Claws has a nice discussion looking at a feral raiding spec for patch 3.1.
- Derevka of Tales of a Priest has a very good rundown of the Acutioneer add-on. We've covered it a few times as well.
- Our own Matticus has thoughts... about Val'Anyr and "stuff."

If he rolled a 20, wouldn't he have saved?
Just sayin.

Yep, 20 is auto-success and 1 is auto-failure.
Sad to see another legend of gaming fade away.

In this case, however, Providence asked him to make a CON check.
And everyone knows that God smiles upon 2nd Edition.

RIP. I hope you and Gary make beautiful tabletops together in the beyond.
Hachel Apr 9th 2009 9:41PM
He was not Gary's biggest fan after the whole trying to take credit for his work. He actually had to go to court just to prove he co-created D&D. So I would think he is working on a his solo project he always told us about :)
I knew him for about 2.5 years when I was going to Fullsail. Funny guy. His class was pointless but great anyways.

likewise! i met him during my (failed) bout at the game design class in fullsail. we mostly just played tabletop games but it was a fun class.
Windfury Apr 9th 2009 10:38PM
Yes, I met him at Full Sail as well, and it was a wonderfully entertaining class, loved to hear him talk about designing games as well.
Not to mention his class was a nice break from the hectic work.
RIP Dave, and Thanks very much.

I saw the news of this on AotS on G4 via their The Feed ticker. I'm very sad that this happened. To you, Dave and Gary, thank you for being pioneers and heroes to the sci-fi and fantasy community. We will miss you very much.

A sad day indeed, they will be mist. MAD props to him and Gary Gygax, without their amazing creative minds, rpg's may never of came to be. Thank you both for sharing your amazing gift and ideas with us all.

Damn, Shinder's was awesome and ghetto. Too bad the owner was a criminal and the place folded. Shinder's, Phoenix Games and others show that hobby stores never last unless they are so deeply corporate that they aren't fun at all.

I'm so glad the FLGS here has lasted 2+ decades. Family owned FTW!
Gessilea Apr 10th 2009 12:07AM
I worked for Shinder's until a few months before it went under, and while it wasn't a surprise at all given all the shenanigans that were going on, it's still a shame to see the comic and gaming shops going under. I wonder how long Dreamhaven is going to last in their new location - going past their old store makes me sad.
Adam Holisky Apr 10th 2009 12:11AM
Schinders definitely was a creepy ass store at times, but it also had a very nice and laid back feel to it.
My birthdays at a young age would always consist of going out to McDonalds for lunch and then Schinders to buy a few comics.
Fatting Food + Comic Book Store = WoW?
Fooliecoolie Apr 10th 2009 12:43AM
Damn all the money I spent at Schinders when I was a kid and teen. I have to have spent over $1000 on D&D, Battletech, Renegade Legion, Gurps, Car Wars, Paranoia, etc... But now my hangouts are Dragon's Lair, Wonko's Toys and Games, and Vulcan Video if I am not waiting to get into the Alamo Drafthouse

Chris Apr 10th 2009 12:04PM
"blizz should make two in game npc's for these guys"
or better yet, make them Elders for the holiday. That's a quest I'd be sure to do.
