The OverAchiever: Insane in the Membrane

Most of you are excited for 3.1 so you can start raiding Ulduar, or take advantage of the new class changes. But I know what some of you are on pins and needles for. It's the new title The Insane.
Insane In The Membrane is exactly what it sounds like -- an achievement for people who are completely nuts. To earn this title you must be willing to spend a lot of time destroying and raising obscure factions in Azeroth. I mean a lot of time. It requires that attain the following:
Honored with Bloodsail Buccaneers
Exalted with Everlook
Exalted with Ratchet
Exalted with Booty Bay
Exalted with Gadgetzan
Exalted with Ravenholdt
Exalted with Darkmoon Faire
Exalted with Shen'dralar
Yep.
If you want to get started on this brain-breaking journey, just follow the jump.
The first thing you should do is get your Bloodsail Buccaneers faction to honored. To do this, you have to kill a lot of Booty Bay Bruisers. But doing this tanks your 4 goblin factions (Everlook, Ratchet, Booty Bay and Gadgetzan). That's why you do this first. Once your Bloodsail rep is at Honored, you can go to Dire Maul: North and do Free Knot over and over and over.
Free Knot is a quest inside of Dire Maul that requires you to loot a Gordok Shackle Key, which you then turn in for reputation and receive a chest of leatherworking and tailoring goods. You can get the key from any random mob in North, but specifically 4 NPCs have a higher chance to drop it than normal: Guard Mol'dar, who is down the ramp right in front of you when you zone in; Guard Fengus, who is found near his chest in the next big room; Guard Slip'kik, who is right near Knot down in the inner part of Dire Maul North; and the Gordok Bushwhacker, who spawns after you loot the Ogre Tannin, on the platform above Knot.
At 375 reputation per turn in, it takes about 243 turn ins, as a non-human, to get Exalted with the four goblin factions. So learn to love this place! You'll be here a lot. Unfortunately, you're not guaranteed a key every run. A helpful way to slightly speed this up is to turn in the Ogre Tannin in Dire Maul. To get this you need the following:
Bolt of Runecloth x4
Rugged Leather x8
Rune Thread x2
Ogre Tannin x1
You get the Tannin from the basket above Knot and you turn the items in to Knot, so turn this in as many times as you have materials to before releasing him with your key.
So you're Honored with Bloodsail and Exalted with The Steamwheedle Cartel? Well, you're only about halfway done. The Insane requires your Shen'dralar reputation to be exalted as well. Shen'Dralar faction is only raisable through turning in 3 Librams in Dire Maul to the appropriate NPCs -- Libram of Focus, Libram of Protection, and Libram of Rapidity. From Neutral to Exalted, you need to turn in 86 of these in any combination.
I would suggest turning in as many Librams of Focus as you can as they are the easiest to make of the 3.
Libram of Focus
Pristine Black Diamond
Large Brilliant Shard (4)
Skin of Shadow (2)
You can farm all of the materials for this one in Scholomance. That's how the pros do it. (86 times.)
If you're still going on this because you really want to be Legolulz or Xxarthasxx The Insane, though, you're still not done. Not by a long shot.
Ravenholdt would be my suggestion next. This faction is actually fairly easy to level in comparison to the others, but it's almost definitely the most boring.
First thing to do is to go to Hillsbrad Foothills and wander over to Durnholde Keep. Syndicate NPCs give 5 Ravenholdt faction per kill. You can go from neutral to 11999/12000 honored just through kills. That means you're killing 4200 of these little fellas if you're 0/3000 neutral. After you've maxed out honored the only way to get faction with Ravenholdt is to turn in 5 Heavy Junkboxes at 75 reputation per turn in. Either level a rogue or make friends with one or be prepared to spend a lot of gold to get the 1470 that you need to get through revered and in to exalted. But if you're truly Insane, the thought of leveling a rogue to get your main a title doesn't faze you all that much. The junkboxes come from any level 50ish mob and require 250 pick pocketing to start getting. It will make you weep at how painfully boring it is to farm, but you want to be THE INSANE. Keep going.
Okay, so. You've farmed the goblins, freed the hell out of Knot, and you've developed carpal tunnel from turning in junk boxes and librams. You aren't done though.
The last step in Insane in the Membrane is to level your Darkmoon Faire faction to exalted. In 3.0 with Inscription this is a lot easier than it has ever been. The Rogues Deck that you can make with Inscription rewards 25 reputation per turn in and you can do it multiple times and in any location. You summon a turn in NPC with the deck and she stays up for about 2 minutes before despawning. You can turn in as many decks to that same NPC as you possibly can in that time. At 25 reputation per turn in, it'll take you 1680 turn ins to go from neutral to exalted. That's a lot of low level herbs used to make cards.
So you've done it. You've earned the title The Insane! You will be envied by people working on the achievement, asked how you got it by people who are unaware of the achievement, and scorned by people who know about it but aren't willing to do it. But it was all worth it. You have an awesome title!
According to Blizzard, being Insane means you have a lot of gold, a lot of patience and a lot of time. By the time you complete this achievement you won't even need a title to remind yourself how crazy you are. You'll have doctors in white coats willing to do it for you.

@Dizaster
Interesting, thanks for the info. After reading about the mob you mentioned:
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=9179
There should be an even more insane rep reward for exalted with Bloodsail. That, is utterly nuts.
Kerberos Apr 9th 2009 7:46PM
The quest for the Hat gives 500 rep and is available at friendly.
Jazzrik in the Badlands give rep only through revered, you will stop at 20999 and not get rep the rep to put you over to exalted. The only way to get to exalted is to save the hat quest until after you're done with the 4101 Jazzrik kills needed to get within 500 rep before exalted.

Congrats to all who get this title. This is a truly unique and exceptional title :D
I wish I had the time to do this. Blizzard is throwing the soloists a very coveted title.

Gratz to all those getting the titles.
Still.. I can't help but think Blizz really shouldn't reward people to spend sooo much time on the game. I know this isn't different from the raiders or PVPers or what not, but I do think there should be less rewards for doing this type of grind-style play.
It doesn't really help when you already spend so much time in-game, then they come out with 'if only you spend another hundred or a thousand hours, you get this cool mount/title/whatever'. I fully appreciate that's how the game runs (been playing for 2+ years), though.
Just my two cents. But again gratz to those getting the titles, that's alot of work.

Of course they are going to reward people for spending a lot of time in the game. Blizz could care less if your girlfriend breaks up with you, you lose your job, etc. They just want your money. Implementing achievements was a very smart move. A lot of people won't suspend their account and will keep following those carrots on a stick. If they put in an achievement for jumping continuously for 5 hours that rewarded a bunny hat... you know thousands of people would be hopping all day long.
Rob Apr 9th 2009 4:10PM
lol, yeah I know they'll be bunny jumping. I guess as i find myself in the twilight of this game, pretty burned out, i am wondering if blizz should have some ethical responsibility to make sure people who don't want to stay dependant have a way out. Blizz is just as bad as big tobacco IMO. Granted I acknowledge my opinion is a very small minority.
Its kinda like big tobacco saying 'we didn't know it was addictive'. Of course blizz knows; they know that the majority of the gamers spend an unhealthy amount of time playing. They like it that way, and it doesn't support the business model for them to say 'dont play this game'. Eventually you just gotta stand up and say, screw you blizz, i'm out.

Eh, I'm grateful for something I can do solo that has grabbed my interest... I've been feeling antisocial lately.
Maevet Apr 9th 2009 2:56PM
Been working on this with my DK for RP reasons and because the guild I'm in & all my friends already think I'm effing nuts.
I do how ever hate all the coverage this achivement is getting as it's made libram & pristine black diamond prices sky rocket on SWC. I used to be able to grab PBD's for 5-10g a pop, now they're 35-50g. Besides that fact, the Shen'dralar has actually been the easiest for me to grind so far.
An yeah I started a rogue to farm the boxes since my friend can old stand to farming them for short bursts..
elstor Apr 9th 2009 2:56PM
Unless they changed it, last time I checked you needed a Consortium Tabard (So exalted with Consortium then) too. May have been removed.
Dizaster Apr 9th 2009 3:02PM
Where did you hear this?
Someone went on the PTR the day they announced this and got the title... Granted, they had Consortium exalted as well, but I never heard that.
I heard some people saying Thorium Brotherhood should have been part of it, which I don't agree. TB is way too easy to be included.
Sikaros Apr 9th 2009 3:03PM
needz a life achievement lol

A small tip for those working at the Bloodsail and Steamwheedle rep grinds:
Once you've killed enough Booty Bay Bruisers, there are various cloth turn-in NPCs near their respective locations. Each cloth turn-in you do for them can get you back up to neutral, but has a slight spillover that will give you rep for the other Steamwheedle factions.
Example:
Turn in cloth to get neutral with Ratchet. Spillover grants rep to Booty Bay, Everlook, and Gadgetzan too.
Turn in cloth to Booty Bay. Your Ratchet turn-ins made you closer to neutral, but every Booty Bay turn in also increases Ratchet rep, even past friendly.
It's a better way to do it if you don't want to grind out that quest as many times.
Dizaster Apr 9th 2009 3:06PM
This ruins your Bloodsail rep, which you need at honored while being Exalted with the rest.
Phocks Apr 9th 2009 3:30PM
Dizaster is right, it decreases your Bloodsail rep by 500, and increases the city's rep by 500 with a 250 spillover to the other Steamwheedle factions.
But, by the time you hit Honored with the Bloodsail, you'll be at Hated with Steamwheedle (0/36000). So, if you feel particularly grindy, you can increase your Bloodsail rep to max, get their title, and then only bring your Bloodsail rep down to Honored through the cloth turn-ins.
It's a different alternative (possibly a quicker one if you have quite a bit of gold to buy cloth), and it'll net you a pirate hat and a 2nd title as well.
Kryxx Apr 9th 2009 3:09PM
For shame, you used that same Cyprus Hill pic just a few weeks ago.
Zerounit Apr 9th 2009 8:17PM
Technically that one had a gnome head shopped in.
chad Apr 9th 2009 3:10PM
I'd recommend doing cloth turnins for Everlook, Ratchet, Booty Bay, and Gadget. That will get you to Neutral for each. Once done, you'll need to complete Free Knot a paltry 104 times as a non-human
smiley Apr 9th 2009 3:35PM
except that any of the cloth turn ins tank your bloodsail rep >_<
and who would want to dissapoint bloodsail... they are afterall I am thier admiral, they are my fleet!
Michael Apr 9th 2009 3:13PM
I think this is abusive and possibly criminal treatment from the game developers. This seems to be aimed at players with addictive personality disorders and OCD type disorders who will surely feel compelled to complete this to their own personal loss. They could add any achievement (grind 900,000 mobs, jump a million times, log 730 days /played) and a handful of troubled people will make it their misguided goal to "achieve". Blizzard keeps their money, but for some this isn't a reward, it's a sick joke of a carrot from the devs for demented players, hence "The Insane".
insane is an understatement Apr 9th 2009 3:45PM
They need to make a title called:
"has a real life"
that you can only get by playing less than 5 hours a week. If you ever go over that, you lose it.
