The OverAchiever: Insane in the Membrane

Most of you are excited for 3.1 so you can start raiding Ulduar, or take advantage of the new class changes. But I know what some of you are on pins and needles for. It's the new title The Insane.
Insane In The Membrane is exactly what it sounds like -- an achievement for people who are completely nuts. To earn this title you must be willing to spend a lot of time destroying and raising obscure factions in Azeroth. I mean a lot of time. It requires that attain the following:
Honored with Bloodsail Buccaneers
Exalted with Everlook
Exalted with Ratchet
Exalted with Booty Bay
Exalted with Gadgetzan
Exalted with Ravenholdt
Exalted with Darkmoon Faire
Exalted with Shen'dralar
Yep.
If you want to get started on this brain-breaking journey, just follow the jump.
The first thing you should do is get your Bloodsail Buccaneers faction to honored. To do this, you have to kill a lot of Booty Bay Bruisers. But doing this tanks your 4 goblin factions (Everlook, Ratchet, Booty Bay and Gadgetzan). That's why you do this first. Once your Bloodsail rep is at Honored, you can go to Dire Maul: North and do Free Knot over and over and over.
Free Knot is a quest inside of Dire Maul that requires you to loot a Gordok Shackle Key, which you then turn in for reputation and receive a chest of leatherworking and tailoring goods. You can get the key from any random mob in North, but specifically 4 NPCs have a higher chance to drop it than normal: Guard Mol'dar, who is down the ramp right in front of you when you zone in; Guard Fengus, who is found near his chest in the next big room; Guard Slip'kik, who is right near Knot down in the inner part of Dire Maul North; and the Gordok Bushwhacker, who spawns after you loot the Ogre Tannin, on the platform above Knot.
At 375 reputation per turn in, it takes about 243 turn ins, as a non-human, to get Exalted with the four goblin factions. So learn to love this place! You'll be here a lot. Unfortunately, you're not guaranteed a key every run. A helpful way to slightly speed this up is to turn in the Ogre Tannin in Dire Maul. To get this you need the following:
Bolt of Runecloth x4
Rugged Leather x8
Rune Thread x2
Ogre Tannin x1
You get the Tannin from the basket above Knot and you turn the items in to Knot, so turn this in as many times as you have materials to before releasing him with your key.
So you're Honored with Bloodsail and Exalted with The Steamwheedle Cartel? Well, you're only about halfway done. The Insane requires your Shen'dralar reputation to be exalted as well. Shen'Dralar faction is only raisable through turning in 3 Librams in Dire Maul to the appropriate NPCs -- Libram of Focus, Libram of Protection, and Libram of Rapidity. From Neutral to Exalted, you need to turn in 86 of these in any combination.
I would suggest turning in as many Librams of Focus as you can as they are the easiest to make of the 3.
Libram of Focus
Pristine Black Diamond
Large Brilliant Shard (4)
Skin of Shadow (2)
You can farm all of the materials for this one in Scholomance. That's how the pros do it. (86 times.)
If you're still going on this because you really want to be Legolulz or Xxarthasxx The Insane, though, you're still not done. Not by a long shot.
Ravenholdt would be my suggestion next. This faction is actually fairly easy to level in comparison to the others, but it's almost definitely the most boring.
First thing to do is to go to Hillsbrad Foothills and wander over to Durnholde Keep. Syndicate NPCs give 5 Ravenholdt faction per kill. You can go from neutral to 11999/12000 honored just through kills. That means you're killing 4200 of these little fellas if you're 0/3000 neutral. After you've maxed out honored the only way to get faction with Ravenholdt is to turn in 5 Heavy Junkboxes at 75 reputation per turn in. Either level a rogue or make friends with one or be prepared to spend a lot of gold to get the 1470 that you need to get through revered and in to exalted. But if you're truly Insane, the thought of leveling a rogue to get your main a title doesn't faze you all that much. The junkboxes come from any level 50ish mob and require 250 pick pocketing to start getting. It will make you weep at how painfully boring it is to farm, but you want to be THE INSANE. Keep going.
Okay, so. You've farmed the goblins, freed the hell out of Knot, and you've developed carpal tunnel from turning in junk boxes and librams. You aren't done though.
The last step in Insane in the Membrane is to level your Darkmoon Faire faction to exalted. In 3.0 with Inscription this is a lot easier than it has ever been. The Rogues Deck that you can make with Inscription rewards 25 reputation per turn in and you can do it multiple times and in any location. You summon a turn in NPC with the deck and she stays up for about 2 minutes before despawning. You can turn in as many decks to that same NPC as you possibly can in that time. At 25 reputation per turn in, it'll take you 1680 turn ins to go from neutral to exalted. That's a lot of low level herbs used to make cards.
So you've done it. You've earned the title The Insane! You will be envied by people working on the achievement, asked how you got it by people who are unaware of the achievement, and scorned by people who know about it but aren't willing to do it. But it was all worth it. You have an awesome title!
According to Blizzard, being Insane means you have a lot of gold, a lot of patience and a lot of time. By the time you complete this achievement you won't even need a title to remind yourself how crazy you are. You'll have doctors in white coats willing to do it for you.

"hey could add any achievement (grind 900,000 mobs, jump a million times, log 730 days /played) and a handful of troubled people will make it their misguided goal to "achieve"
They already had that. They gave you a frostsaber.

This is definitely one of those titles that is not for me. I enjoy instances and raids. Questing and constant rep grinding is a painful process for me. When I finally started an alt, I decided I'd only level through 5 mans. So far, so good.

Everyone who does this must realize this is time you'll regret spending badly when on your deathbed.

Pointless grinding for useless rep for obsolete factions for a frankly stupid title.
/pity anyone I see with this.

@ insane
plenty of people maintain lives and enjoy this game much more than 5 hours a week.
I have a awsome GF who like me loves playing video games, we play WoW together, we still go out, we both are in school (her fulltie me part time) , and all the while i maintain a fulltime job (her a part time one)
you're just jealous of purple pixels ;) j/k even casuals full clear naxx in under 3 hours these days with pugs

You can also get Ogre Tannin out of Knot's stash that he leaves for you once you free him. Often, I get two tannins out of it.

I call fail on suggesting you do free knot as the first thing to do to up your steamwheedle rep.
In actuality, there is another faster way to get your rep for steamwheedle to at least honored. Killing pirates outside of Rachet earns 5 rep per, and 25 for the head pirate (can't remember his name). I was grinding these before the reputation level penalty was removed, and at that time was only getting 800 rep per hour. After the level penalty was removed, I was getting 4000 rep per hour, which is far above the 1500-2000 rep per hour you'll get in Dire Maul North. You can do this until honored, and that will save you a LOT of runs in Dire Maul. All of this rep is for ratchet, but you also get 50% of it going towards the other 3 reps, so this method is still faster than Dire Maul runs, and you don't lose your Bloodsail rep.
Of course, now that I've mentioned this you may have competition, so either group up, or tee-hee, ELIMINATE them.
Oh, and if your alliance, the horde have a nice escort quest that takes the NPC right through that area, so if you see them doing the escort, feel free to kill them.
One other thing, I was NOT looting, looting those mobs simply wasted too much time. Sad tho, I'm sure I wasted a lot of gold in cloth drops.

I suppose I should add that there is no pick-pocket skill, only lock picking. You also don't have to open the boxes so you don't need any skill in lock picking either.
Yorki Apr 9th 2009 5:42PM
Pls look up rogue skills, I believe its level 4, costs 90 copper, Reddish bag with green tie.
Evi Apr 9th 2009 4:29PM
I absolutely do not have the patience to acquire this title. Good luck to those who do!
Draelan Apr 9th 2009 4:32PM
I have a question... do you really need Bloodsail and Goblin rep at honored/exalted at the same time? Or can you, say, level one to honored/exalted, get credit for it, then level the other in ways that would destroy your rep with the opposing faction?
And please, I'd like actual confirmation, not speculation.
AltairAntares Apr 9th 2009 5:40PM
Yeah, it's confirmed, you need to have them at the required state at the same time.
Autrui Apr 9th 2009 5:44PM
Yes, it's been confirmed. There is no partial tracking: you must be honored with Bloodsail and exalted with Steamwheedle at the same time.
Here's a video:

I didn't make it, but we should thank the dude who did, despite how much I hate the truth the video presents...
Draelan Apr 9th 2009 5:54PM
Damn. Looks like I'll have to destroy my Goblin rep to get Bloodsail up to snuff, then work Goblins back up again. *sigh* I think that's going to be the worst part. Though Shen'dralar isn't looking too great, either.
It may take a while, but I'll get it eventually. thanks for the info!
ScytheNoire Apr 9th 2009 7:16PM
I thought about it, because it would be really cool title to have. Then I read about the various reps required and have come to the conclusion that I'm not that insane.
Maybe they can have a moderately disturbed title.
Gimia Apr 9th 2009 7:33PM
Freeing Knot is 350 rep per, not 375. I've been doing this for quite awhile and know that's what it is. If you can do the 5 instances per hour limit that's 1400 rep per hour which is about 58 hours of grinding from 0 hated to exalted.
Gimia Apr 9th 2009 7:36PM
Oh also forgot. For the Shen'dralar rep I found it much easier to stick with protection librams if you could help it. The abom stichings were quite easy to get considering the number of times I've done baron runs (and still havn't gotten it) from the guys outside the slaughterhouse and Ramstein.
PeeWee Apr 9th 2009 7:46PM
Would almost be cooler to have a character with as FEW achievements as possible.
Amaxe Apr 14th 2009 2:27PM
Would you get an achievement for that? ;)
