Five tips for inventory management
So I've been leveling an alt lately (yes, despite the fact that it makes my skin crawl a little bit, I've been leveling a Paladin so I can tank and heal with dual specs when they show up), and my biggest problem isn't the XP, since Blizzard has nerfed the leveling time so much. It's not the quests, either -- between Questhelper and having done the 1-60 jig five or six times before, I'm all set for quests now. Nope, it's managing my inventory -- I'm questing so quickly that the biggest problem I have is just keeping bag space open.So here's a few tips I've picked up along the way. Even if you're not leveling, maybe some of these will help. And I'm sure there are plenty of great ways to make sure your bags are clear that I haven't discovered yet (I know for a fact that there are plenty of addons out there that I haven't had an interest in yet) -- feel free to share your own tips in the comments below.
1. Sell the junk (even if you think it's not junk). The quickest way to clear out some inventory is to run to a vendor and just start selling. It can be a tough decision sometimes in both ways: I tend to want to keep things because I have a base packrat tendency as it is, and I always know there's a use somewhere for even the cheapest junk: maybe some Shaman will want that Fish Oil! But the fact is that you have to be kind of ruthless when clearing out the bags -- sell the grays (there are addons that will help with this, though I haven't used any), sell the whites unless you know there's a market for them, and I often even sell the greens -- while die-hard AHers will say you can always make more than vendor for AH on green items, I'm just not patient enough to keep posting (along with the fee that goes with it) until the items sell for a gold or two more than they would for a vendor. Yes, maybe that's why I've never been able to buy a Traveler's Tundra mount, but especially in these days of level 80 dailies and the gold you can earn from them, the bag space is worth more to me than the pennies I'd earn otherwise. If you really can't bear to sell things to a vendor, then...
2. Get a bank alt, and use it for everything. Bank alts are awesome for freeing up bag space. My Paladin is a Miner and an Engineer, and all the ore and Engie doodads that I collect go straight back to my bank alt until I need them again. Given that mail between alts is almost instant and super cheap, there's no reason you can't have a dedicated alt standing by the mailbox in Ironforge or Org with a bank of its own running all of your main's equipment. If you really want to go all out, you can use a character that's already at a relatively high level, and powerlevel their enchanting high enough that they can disenchant all of those greens and make some real money. Just make sure to deck them out nice so everyone knows what they're there for.
3. Gear up right. The number one investment you can make in your character, no matter what class or spec or level you are, is more bag space. Buying bigger bags is always worth it -- if you can fill up that one extra bag slot with something you can see for a few g on the Auction House, your bag will pay for itself within a few hours of leveling or grinding. And don't forget profession bags -- while they have some weird requirements (why don't jewels fit into my Mammoth Mining Bag again?), they're almost always worth it, especially while leveling or grinding for a profession (and when you're done with them, put them in your bank and have them hold profession stuff there). We're also lucky, because we're playing in the time of the Gnomish Army Knife -- if you can afford one or if you have an alt or guildie who's willing to make one for you, pick it up early and use it often. On my Miner/Engineer, that thing saves five slots of my bag space.
4. Organize! Everyone has their bags set up different. Unfortunately, Blizzard still hasn't implemented my bag naming idea yet, but you know you how you like your inventory set up -- I like to keep oft-used permanent items like tools and food in my backpack, extra and off-spec gear in my second bag, crafting mats in my third, and empty space out from there. Everyone has their own scheme for organizing, but as long as you have a scheme that works, stick to it, and you'll be able to not only find things when you need them (I keep my potions on the action bars, but occassionally I'll forget to drag the healthstone over and have to dive into my bags to grab it before I'm killed during a raid), but you'll know when things are out of place that need to go elsewhere.
5. Regular maintenance is better than emergency cleaning. This is one I'm still bad on -- in fact, I know I've forgotten to fly back and train up for the past few even levels I've hit. If you stop by a vendor and clean things up every time you're in town, then you'll be better off when you do start picking up lots of junk. Keep an eye out for quest items, especially -- I tend to turn in quests that I picked up a while ago, leaving one weird spot in a strange place in my bag that then gets filled up with vendor trash that I miss over time. Addons like Onebag can help with this as well, but really, the more organized your bags are and the more time you take to make sure they're in order, the less chance you'll end up having full bags when you really need to pick up that quest item.

Upgrade your bags, should be #6.

I believe that's covered under section #3, but for levelling, the best bang for your buck is likely netherweave (16slot) bags, they're rather cheap, and really if you have a friendly tailor, you can gather the mats yourself stupid quick.

#3 seems focused more on getting profession specific bags.
I'm just talking of upgrading the generic bag as far as you can go, and in turn, doing the same for your mules/banks.

While there is some commentary on profession specific bags, if you actually read the first two sentences, you'd see they echo the exact same sentiments you just expressed.
My opinion differs a bit in that I'm only willing to hand down my alts 16slot bags, and maybe profession specific. I've found it quite sufficient in terms of space, even double gatherers still had enough space to hold greys long enough for me to unload at a vendor at a convenient time. Northrend bags I find not to offer the value they would cost me, what with diminishing returns from more space and exponentially increasing price for the bags.

On the topic of add-ons, what's the least resource intensive add-on that shows all of your bags in one and sorts them? I'm currently using Engbags, but it's my most resource intensive add-on, using more MBs than even Pitbull.

I use Bagnon, I really like it and it doesn't seem memory intensive!

I absolutely LOVE arkinventory. Not only does it allow me to see all my bags at once, but I can set up my own organization system within the display window.
Additionally, it also allows you to toggle through different locations (ie, your bank and the guild bank), AND the inventory of other toons, even alts on different realms.
Quickshiv Apr 10th 2009 11:39AM
+1 for ark, when leveling you can filter all of your quest items into 1 spot. No more looking for that darn item for 5 mintues again.
zappo Apr 10th 2009 11:42AM
I tried Bagnon and it hardly used any resources at all so I'd second that. However I found that I tend to organize my bags by classes of stuff in certain bags. That and Bagnon didn't differentiate between specialty bags and regular ones. That made herb bags and engineering toolboxes a HUGE pain to deal with (slots that are mysteriously open but you can't put things in).

ArkInventory is a godsend, particularly if you don't find it hard to "figure out" addons. A lot of people get ArkInv and just end up with one big glob of a bag, not knowing how to separate it out... but these are the same people who find Grid intimidating for the most part. :P
It's for some people and it's not for others. But if you can figure addons out or aren't afraid to ask in Trade if anyone can help you learn how to use it, it's AMAZING.
Also re: vendoring greys, tekJunkSeller is my favorite.
Ailis Apr 10th 2009 12:09PM
@zappo Maybe it's been a while since you used Bagnon and it's a feature they implemented but Bagnon colors the squares of the specialty bags so you can see the difference. For instance, on my Herbalist, her herb bag has green squares. On my Scribe, her Inscription bag has gold squares. Makes it really easy to see and organize.

Tuller's Combuctor is Bagnon with the functionality of ArkInventory. No setup req'd.
Addons that require you to spend 10 minutes working on them to show stuff correctly is not an addon I prefer using. Combuctor is actually the best one out there, IMO.
Ilnara Apr 10th 2009 1:25PM
@zappo ; I use bagnon and my Enchanting bag slots are colored with a green border so I know what slots those are.
Also, Bagnon orders your bag slots based on what bag is where in the Bag Bar, so, if you stick your Prof bags in the last slot, Bagnon will ALWAYS put that bag at the bottom of your bag window no matter how you choose to arrange it's columns, scale etc.
You'll notice that the default backpack is always at the top of the Bagnon window. And items you grab will fill your bagnon bag starting from the top left and going across the top row till its' filled then down to the next row.

best addon in the world: Mr.Plow
it organizes your inventory/bank at the click of a button
HunterFromTheStart Apr 10th 2009 9:13PM
I cannot possibly agree that mr plow is all that useful, at least for hunters. Every time I turned around, Mr Plow was moving my ammo out of the ammo bag. Of course, this was in conjunction with OneBag. I might have to consider trying it without OneBag. Since that disasterous event, I've gone back to baggins. It completely redesigns the bag list, with things such as Junk, food and potions, ammo, and puts them in different compartment windows.

I've found the add-on AutoProfit to be very handy, it adds an icon to all vendor screens that auto-sells all grey items in your bags when you click on it. Very handy for when a grey item gets into my bags in an unexpected square as I'd usually overlook it when selling off crap.
Zamboni Apr 10th 2009 1:07PM
There's a setting in Auctioneer that can do this, too. It sells gray items to the vendor, plus disenchants, mills or prospects any eligible items put in the bag. (It's also a good way to lose some gear if you're not paying attention and click the wrong button.)
Iceflow Apr 10th 2009 11:25AM
I hear ya Mike, I'm also a packrat. I tend to start to send things to alts in case I need them. Sometimes I just have to buckle down and sell which is the hardest thing. I even tend to use up my bank alt. And my bank alts get the best begs quickly. Because I WILL use all of that space.
I use Ark Inventory for organizing my bags (kinda uses your bag name idea). It's super customizable and you can choose to turn it off for certain banks (i.e. guild bank).
And I agree with regular maintenance...which reminds me...time to get my bags together. Great post for a packrat like me!
Katz Apr 10th 2009 6:07PM
Packrats unite!
Get yourself a guild bank for the collectables, buy a few tabs, it's a must for any bank alt anyway IMHO. Now connect your bank alt and levelling alt this way.
As for space WHILE out levelling, yeah, grab cheap 16-slot bags for a few gold each, should provide plenty of space between vendors.

personally i'm a big fan of arkinventory. its a lil setup intensive (depending on how anal you are :P). but being able to sort all items & modify their traditional listings to fit your personal needs into various columns is wonderful. not to mention if you have multiple bankalts you can be on one toon and do an overall search of all toons to find what you're looking for.
