Why we should expect an expansion announcement at Blizzcon

We're almost six months into Wrath's lifespan. Patch 3.1 is just around the corner, and before too long we'll be talking about 3.2. I anticipate 3.2 will come out quicker than most content patches and that 3.3 will be on its way soon after. After that, I'm willing to put good money on an expansion following it. We've had a lot of hints and solid information ready to back up a Q4 2009 expansion release, and even hints about what the content in it would be.
Here's what we know.
- There's a Blizzcon this year.
There hasn't been a Blizzard-run event in the past four years without a product announcement. Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 are both already announced. The next-gen MMO is way too far off to warrant any kind of announcement. Yes, there may be a mystery fifth project, but an expansion announcement is far more likely at this point.
Those who're ready to argue with me and say "well they could be using Blizzcon to announce a beta for SC2 or D3 or announcing their release dates", remember that they didn't do this for Wrath or BC.
- There's probably no raid coming in 3.2.
All reports indicate a new Battleground coming in 3.2, along with an instance related to the Argent Tournament. If there's a raid coming in 3.2, they've been incredibly mum about it, especially given how open they were regarding raid progression in BC. I'm inclined to believe that this means that Icecrown is the next and likely only big raid coming in Wrath after Ulduar. Yes, I know that Jeff Kaplan said there was going to be a mystery raid in 3.2 at Blizzcon. I have my reasons for doubting it, but there's still time for me to be proven wrong.
What this means is that the raiding lifespan of WOTLK is likely shorter than BC's or vanilla's. This indicates a quicker expansion successor.
- Dev and Community are being very open with us regarding content additions, changes, and features.
Ghostcrawler is leading the vanguard of better communication regarding changes coming down the pipe, class theorycrafting dialogue, and new content. But what does this have to do with the expansion? Read below.
- CMs and devs are teasing the hell out of us.
So far CMs and devs have dropped believable hints about the following:
• Use of phasing in the old world
• Opening Greymane Wall
• Bringing zones that exist but don't exist to the forefront (Gilneas, Kul Tiras, etc)
Gilneas and Kul Tiras are both nations with strong ties to the sea, and both are currently inaccessible to players. Near them is the troll nation of Zul'Dare and the isle of Crestfall. Near the Maelstrom in the ocean's center are a large number of islands, like Kezan, Tel'Abim, Hiji, Zandalar and the Broken Isles. This is a ton of possible content should they go the South Seas route with the expansion. And what better neutral city than the bustling home of the goblin trade princes, Undermine?
On a different side of things, there's the ever-present Emerald Dream theory.
Chris Metzen says that Malfurion Stormrage is not only getting his own novel but will soon become an important character in the game again. This points heavily to use of the Emerald Dream, since that's, you know, where he
currently is.
The Dream isn't just a "new continent," though.
- The Emerald Dream, in lore, contains prototypes of Azeroth.
This is actually a really great piece of information. It opens up a lot of cool ideas for where we'll go and what we'll do when the expansion lands.
Remember that the Dream isn't affected by what happened to real Azeroth, so, for example, the Sundering never happened, leaving Azeroth one giant mass instead of three sundered shards. It wouldn't necessary play by the same rules as current zones, meaning some (Blasted Lands, for example) would be absent and some (where Zin-Azshari would be) would still be there now.
The possibilities are exciting and pretty much endless.
In summary, here's what my Magic 8-ball is telling me.
• We're getting a new expansion sometime this year.
• It'll be announced at Blizzcon.
• It'll involve old-world content or zones in some way.
• It'll involve the Maelstrom, the Emerald Dream, or both.
• There's going to be a new hero class or race.
No matter what, I'm excited. Blizzard has learned a lot since launch and I'm sure they'll give us an even bigger and better experience with whatever comes next -- even better than the fantastic expansion we're playing currently.

I think the healer plate issue will be addressed by eliminating spell power and attack power into a single stat called "power". It seems to have worked for damage/healing.
To go along with a change like that, a monk would be perfect. A cloth wearing melee DPS/healer.

I'm thinking demon hunter ...
we've already seen em, and if its a demonic invation into the emerald dream OR meal it'd make sense
vexis58 Apr 10th 2009 8:42PM
Blizzard has said that they want to change holy paladins eventually so that their healing spells scale off of melee stats and they can share gear with all of the other dps plate classes and there won't BE any more spellpower plate, but that it's too large of a job for a mere patch. So I doubt we'll see a plate-wearing caster in the next expansion. We're more likely to see spellpower plate removed entirely.
Especially since our first hero class was already a plate wearer. I'd imagine a leather or mail-wearing magic class similar to a druid or shaman. After all, there are 3 cloth-wearing classes, and (now) 3 plate-wearing classes, but leather and mail are still at 2 each. Aa new class should wear either leather or mail.

Less than a year till the next expansion, I hope not.
Also having only two new large raids in a whole expansion is pretty pathetic.

"Also having only two new large raids in a whole expansion is pretty pathetic."
Truth.
I mean, if Icecrown is going to be as large as Uldaur, they will be pretty awesome instances. It'll just feel somewhat, empty though at the same time.

I seriously lold at the "no raid in 3.2" part.
There are SO many options for the 3.2 raid: Grim Batol, a new raid in Wyrmrest, Uldum (dungeon, not a raid, but still), a troll
raid in Zul'Drak, a Nerubian raid, etc.
Are you seriously even considering the option of having no new raid?
Sean Apr 10th 2009 3:04PM
Unless, of course, you don't raid. In which case having more solo/small group/5 man content is Awesome.
Cat Apr 10th 2009 3:22PM
Nah, there will indeed be a raid in 3.2 . Blizzard stated it, and they stated it would be a secret. The opening comments in this entry only bolster that, rather than hint at there being no raid in the next major patch.
No one knew anything about the Argent Tournament until it popped up on the PTR, and someone happened to stumble onto it. Blizzard is perfectly capable of checking the sealant on their tight ships.

I don't even see the notion of only 2 raids in WotLK as a possibility. Blizzard has sort of set a precedent for themselves with the previous level caps of WoW as far as how many raid instances are a minimum for that level cap.
At 60 we had Blackrock Spire, Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Ahn'Qiraj 20 and 40, Zul'Gurub, Onyxia's Lair and Naxxramas. Not even counting that Scholomance used to be a 10 man raid that's 9.
At 70 we had Karazhan, Serpentshrine Caverns, Tempest Keep, Black Temple, Zul'Aman, Gruul's Lair, CoT: Mount Hyjal, Magtheradon and Sunwell Plateau. Again, 9 raids.
At 80 so far we've got Vault of Archavon, Obsidian Sanctum, Eye of Eternity, Naxxramas and Ulduar coming up next patch. We also know that 3.3 is supposedly going to be the Icecrown raid. That's only 6 raids accounted for so far. We know VoA is getting expanded, which is good, but I hardly think that counts.
Just to keep up the precedents Blizzard will likely be delivering 3 more raids at least. 4 more may even be possible given that Naxx is really just a redux of the level 60 instance. Have a little faith in the developers that haven't failed to give us awesome and fun content yet. They've always opted to not go the Everquest route and release expansion after expansion every time they have new content. We still have a while before the next expansion and we're due a lot of solid content before we get there.
Triforceelf Apr 10th 2009 2:18PM
I wonder if the emerald dream and maelstrom will be one expansion...
RipeTomatoe Apr 10th 2009 2:10PM
I don't think it'll happen in 2009, however Q1 - Q2 2010 seems plausible.
Spacedrabbit Apr 10th 2009 2:10PM
While all these predictions sure are enticing, a new expansion to be released this year seems incredibly unlikely.
A new hero class as well? Before they've come close to balancing the latest one? That seems rather doubtful as well.
But a phased-out version of Azeroth, with old world content redesigned for lv 80-?? would be about the best thing ever :D
Naix Apr 10th 2009 2:25PM
"Before they've come close to balancing the latest one? That seems rather doubtful as well. "
Do you even know what you just said? DK class is so very balanced is the other classes that need to be balanced, and they are in patch 3.1. DKs had been polished for months and months prior to release. That is why they preform so well is because they have been focused on for so long.
Freedomfighter Apr 10th 2009 3:18PM
@Naix
So basically you are saying DKs are SO balanced that they are significantly out performing every other class? Are you serious? Do you understand what the word balanced means?
balance - equality of distribution
So basically you are saying that Death Knights have such an large proportion of the distribution of power that they are the most equal.
DKs are ridiculously OP. They completely dominate tanking, PVP, and are very competitive in PVE DPS. They need to be brought in line with the capabilities of other classes.
Heilig Apr 10th 2009 3:24PM
Yeah, I guess that's why Blizzard keeps telling us to be patient with DK balance since they've only had a few months to work with them as opposed to the four years of iteration they've had with the rest of the classes. That's why they are dominant in both PvP and tanking roles.
BUT WAIT! If they're admittedly OP from the developers of the game, then that must mean facerolling your way to all those victories DOESN'T in fact make you a great player! No, No, NO! That can't be it, it must be everyone else that's underpowered.
PopeJamal Apr 10th 2009 6:11PM
"facerolling your way to all those victories DOESN'T in fact make you a great player!"
Why are you people so butt-hurt over face-rollers? Know anybody with an easier job than yours that makes tons more money? Same thing. It happens.
Grow up and stop being "so srs!"
1b1len Apr 10th 2009 2:12PM
I hope you're right.
But I have my doubts about a new expansion this year already, the previous two had more then 1,5 years time between it, but we'll see.
MikeM Apr 10th 2009 2:12PM
I highly doubt that an expansion is coming THIS year. Next year is a better bet IMO. Remember that Blizzard has said they would like to update the graphics in the next expansion, and also that they want to space content out further than they did with BC so that they don't have a content gap between Wrath and the next expansion.
Given the Battle.net switch overs and the contests related to SC2 beta key's I'd bet we can expect a release date announcement for it at Blizzcon. Will the next expansion be unveiled? Maybe.
TheChao Apr 10th 2009 2:14PM
Who says they can't release the Emerald Dream/Maelstrom/Undermine AS patch 3.2.
Im predicting they reveal patch 3.2 as a much larger point in the story than we think. Maybe we find some weapon or force that will help us eradicate the Lich King and the scourge for good.
Seanguy Apr 10th 2009 2:16PM
Maybe I'll finally get a goblin toon...
