Blizzard's Blue Tracker
Now personally, I don't like theirs compared to MMO-Champion, World of Raids, or WoWRaid. All those have a nice layout that allows for quick viewing and easy summaries of posts. It's much preferable to the "tool" Blizzard has put up.
Additionally, the Blizzard blue tracker lacks an RSS feed and the ability to search through the posts.
It's clear that Blizzard did this to dissuade the use of third party blue trackers and other sites.
Some folks in Blizzard like to try to control the flow of information and all that. But in the long run I don't think this will do very much to dissuade other sites from having their own blue trackers since the Blizzard one lacks many necessary features, and this new tool really won't help control information release (since all we see is "soon" and other word games anyways).
If Blizzard really wanted to make this a tool that would be useful they could implement the following things:
- Tagging of all blue posts (ie: warrior, paladin, dps, ghostcrawler, gin-in-coffee)
- Search
- RSS feeds based on any number of criteria (tags, post location, poster)
- Links on each blue post to previous relevant posts
- Filter (I often only care what Ghostcrawler has to say and not a mod banning some troll)
- Read this item check marks, to help you track that you've read the given blue post
Next up: Blizzard starts running its own blog and actually release information about patches and in-game events in a timely manner.

I see an RSS feed for each selection in the drop-down list. Did you miss it?

Odd. It's now showing up for me at all:

Nice, a good addition to the forums

---Paranoid much? Or trying make a joke? It's hard to tell.

Yeah, I mean, it's far more likely that this is just another case of Blizzard seeing a useful UI feature, then doing a half assed job of copying it... ;)

Someone is close to using up their tin-foil quota on this article. :)

Maybe they should try fixing the serious issues with the search engine that have existed for years already.
Seriously, I need to use google just to find a forum topic I read yesterday.

I agree. It's a shame to see Blizzard adding more and more 'features', but they still forget or avoid to fix bugs. Blizzard has always been very unprofessional in webdesign.
Kaphik Apr 13th 2009 7:42PM
I can't even find posts made by ME using the search feature. Agreed, fix that first, please.
Lorsty Apr 13th 2009 8:36PM
That feature isn't broken, they just disable it most of the time so the forums work and we don't get "Server is Busy, please try again later" messages all the time.

Nice job Blizzard, it is, after all still in BETA being brand spanking new and all so all suggested additions will most probably come in due course.
Menchi Apr 13th 2009 7:32PM
Uhh you can search by each forum for all blue posts related (so you can specifically look up paladin, warrior, etc), you can jump to the article in question on each blue post as well.
I'd love to have it filter out you've been banned for actual useful blue posts but i think you didn't spend a ton of time looking around.
Bloodletter Apr 13th 2009 7:35PM
So the forum downtime was to implement a Blizz Tracker, not to take off the PTR Forums.

Yet another instance of WE MUST HAVE ALL THE MONEY from Blizzard as far as I can tell with a sub-par implementation of someone else's idea.
see also: LFG, Threat meters, in-game calendars, instance maps and other attempts to integrate third party ideas in a half-assed manner that doesn't really fix much of anything at all but serves to help out the people who are slightly behind the rest of the pack when it comes to learning about third party help in WoW.

Among the other things that Bli$$ard has added to the standard WoW interface over the years so that we don't have to run addons to accomplish them, those money-grubbing bastards:
- Numeric buff timer displays
- Individual keybindings per character
- Quest objective tracker
- Auction interface that remembers prices when listing multiple identical items
- An online equipment/item database clearly designed to put Wowhead & Thottbot out of business!!!!
All in the name of the almighty dollar! Shame on you, Bli$$ard!!!
Give me a break, man. These things make the game more usable and convenient for everybody. Are they supposed to go out of their way to obfuscate simple information so that you HAVE to run add-ons to get at it?
Hoggersbud Apr 13th 2009 9:42PM
Yeah, cuz clearly they're making MONEY off this service which was developed at a profit and has no ongoing costs to operate it!
Lorini Apr 13th 2009 8:11PM
Blizzard takes a lot of ideas (see a zillion mods they've stolen) and incorporates them. Not everybody who reads the forums even knows about these other websites. Blizzard is certainly entitled to make their employee posts more visible and I'm sure that's what they are doing. They cannot control the flow information, and I didn't see anywhere that would indicate that this is their intention.
Lorsty Apr 13th 2009 8:39PM
I believe this is way of Blizzard to say "Hey, this site has a good feature, let's add it to our own forums!" because, you know, not everyone knows about the good fansites... and wowinsider.
This is just, as far as I can see, an alternative to all those sites.
