WoW zones in real life
Aurdon over at I Sheep Things spotted this great collection of comparisons between real-life environs and the in-game places that they inspired. Not all of the comparisons are pitch-perfect, obviously (there are no Nagrand-esque floating islands in the real world, and the Crystalsong Forest picture shows trees covered in ice rather than the mystical wood that grows in-game), but lots of the pictures are really dead-on, and they show you really well how Blizzard uses a kind of hyper-realized version of Earth to create what seems like a very real Azeroth.
We've posted before how the architecture of WoW mirrors real-world places and culture, but even the natural world of Azeroth uses lots of Earth's real-life elements. And it would be cool to know where these pictures actually come from -- some of them are recognizable (obviously, Stranglethorn Vale is based on parts of the Amazon, and The Barrens represents Africa's savannahs), but even Icecrown and Zangarmarsh are represented (in slightly less mythical form) on Earth. It would be interesting to know exactly where.

Shouldn't it be the other way around?
Last I checked, Earth existed before WoW. I could be wrong though...
Kakistocracy Apr 13th 2009 6:17PM
Maybe God cheated and looked at the concept art that Blizzard would go on to draw...
Keyra Apr 13th 2009 6:27PM
I got an award for Norway.
Kakistocracy Apr 13th 2009 6:35PM
Oh, are those fjords your work? I've been pining for them for years.
Roflpanda Apr 13th 2009 7:24PM
Do you mean Earth was here FIRST?
Matchu Apr 13th 2009 6:09PM
It's pretty sad that there's no info on the Earth places. The Grizzly hills / Howling Fjord looks-a-likes, are just beautiful.
Grizzly looks vaguely like Switzerland, but that's the best I've got.

Yeah, I would've been a lot more interested if they'd provided captions explaining where the RL photos were from.
rosencratz Apr 13th 2009 6:15PM
I'm pretty sure the "real" icecrown is a render.
dotorion Apr 14th 2009 2:52AM
Yep, has Terragen written all over it.
Lemons Apr 14th 2009 4:32AM
Yea, that crappy lens flare alone was enough to tell me it's not real...
trela Apr 13th 2009 7:06PM
I always saw The Grizz as having a North American evergreen forest vibe, what with all the "imperial" (read bald) eagles and grizzly bears. And the lumberjacks - I can see them leaping from tree to tree as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia! The giant redwood! The fir! The larch! The mighty Scots pine...
...ooh, now I've done it.
Sidias Apr 13th 2009 6:19PM
Icecrown and Azuremyst are not "real" in the traditional sense, Meaning they're photoshopped to oblivion.
Freedomfighter Apr 13th 2009 6:21PM
Many of them don't seem that close to me.
Dragonblight comes to mind...

So Wowinsider is commenting on a blog commenting on this collection of pictures? I need to get a blog and make a comment about this article!
More seriously, the pictures are interesting, but what is the contribution of the middleman? Finding something that someone else made is a bit like discovering an inhabited land mass... oh, yeah... Go Cristobal!
Deltrus Apr 13th 2009 6:23PM
Icecrown, Torokkar and Howling Fjord all look like British Columbia in Canada.
Kugie B. Apr 13th 2009 6:24PM
Howling Fjord looks a lot like the Rockies, specifically the Tetons.
Grizzly Hills might be the alps somewhere, but I'm not quite as sure.
Dithyram Apr 19th 2009 6:25AM
I'd say Grizzly Hills was inspired by Sequoia National Park or Redwood National Park in California.
Saelorn Apr 13th 2009 6:29PM
Stranglethorn Vale is based more clearly on Africa than the Amazon, what with the whole Hemet Nesingwary and his Green Hills. I thought this was the common belief.
miko Apr 13th 2009 7:03PM
actually those types of 'Movie' jungles have more in common with India than Africa.
John Apr 13th 2009 6:33PM
Could you imagine all the old world zones redone?
How would the Barrens or Dun Morogh look if it had the level of detail of Howling Fjord or Grizzly Hills?
Also I Sheep Things wasn't the original author/creator of this article, it sounds like it was WoWraid.com
