How to get the Turtle mount
We're listening in to your replies on Twitter about what you're all planning to do when you log into 3.1 for the first time, and an astounding number of people are planning to go for the fishing mount. Yes, despite the fact that everything Blizzard has told us points to the Turtle mount obtained via fishing being extremely rare, lots of players are after it anyway. We've decided, then, to wish you luck. And to help you out, we'll give you a few tips that just might help make the almost assuredly long, boring, clicking grind bearable.1. Learn to fish (and cook). If you're going to be fishing for the mount, you might as well learn to fish and cook while you do it. The mount itself drops from fishing pools in Northrend, so if all you're doing is going for those, it'll take you a little longer to level than just sitting in Stormwind and leveling fishing (which you can definitely do), but you might as well up your profession while you do it. El's Angling is the guide of choice -- follow it closely and you'll be 450 Fishing/Cooking in no time.
2. Find Fish. If you follow El's guide, you'll figure this out along the line, but even if you've already leveled fishing, you'll definitely want to make sure you've got the Find Fish ability, obtained from the Weather-Beaten Journal, which you get from -- you guessed it -- fishing. This will help you find fish pools on the minimap tracker, and since you need to fish in pools in Northrend to get the mount, it'll be a huge help, if not invaluable.
3. Watch or listen to something. This is more of an out of game tip than an ingame one, but fishing is boring. It's designed to be boring (probably because the real thing is boring, too). You'll have much less chance of going insane while doing all the fishing if you distract yourself a little bit -- turn on a movie, the ballgame, or a podcast or two (ahem) in the background. I like to tweak my UI while I fish as well -- turn your ingame music off, and everything but sound effects down while turning your overall volume up. That'll make sure you hear the splash you need to click, while leaving the rest of the background sound out of it.
4. Choose your fishing spot carefully. Unfortunately, the mount is only found in Northrend pools, so you won't be able to fish in the pools of, say, Terrokar, and try to farm Mr. Pinchy and the Sea Turtle at the same time (though wouldn't that be great?!). But that doesn't mean that there aren't valuable things to fish up while farming the mount -- take a look on the AH and see what kinds of fish (and food, if you have leveled cooking) are selling, and then do your grinding on that stuff. Given that the mount can come from anywhere in Northrend, you have lots of different places to fish from, so check with your guild, too, and see what's needed, and then do your fishing there.
5. It's not going to be easy. Like we said, everything Blizzard has told us about this mount tells us that it's very, very rare, and that the drop rate is very, very low. Blizzard has a habit of raising drop rates later on once a really rare mount has been out for a while (note that's drop mounts, not achievement mounts -- those they usually remove from the game completely), so eventually we're guessing it'll be easier to get. But it's brand new and it's designed to be hard to get, so if you really are going all out trying to get it, prepare to be fishing for a while.
Or who knows -- even with a really low drop rate, there's always that chance you'll pick it up right away. Good luck!

I love fishing, and regularly do an epic fishing run to get enough mats to make 20 or so fish feasts to bring with me raiding.
1) I use an add-on (I think it's called fishing ace, I read about it here on wowinsider in one of the essential-addons-for-wrath columns) that automatically casts when you double click. Surprisingly handy.
2) After casting, I place the cursor over the fishing bobber, and, as this article suggests, turn up the game volume so that I'll notice the splash even if I'm looking away right when it goes off.
3) However, that only works when there's no one else fishing near you. I have lost fish when someone else's bobber splashed and I clicked reflexively before I realized.
4) Part of why I love fishing is that it is a perfect time for knitting. No, seriously; I cast the bobber, knit for 30 seconds, click the splashing bobber, recast, and knit for another 30 seconds. Combine this with a baseball game on the radio and life is very, very good. :-)

haha sounds like me. I take the time I spend fishing for myself and my guild to play my DS or my PSP. Multi-tasking while fishing FTW!

I like fishing when no one else is around too as it lets me do other things at the same time - I can't stand fishing when other people are near by because that means I have to stare at the screen and make sure my bobber is the one that bobbed and not some jerk's who decided to come close to me. (Of course this doesn't count crowded placed like Dalaran's fountain where you have no choice to crowd near other people.)
They really need to do something so you can click an option to NOT hear other people's bobbers.

Do I detect a little Q with a side helping of Q there? Meeeeow! Either someone had the Baron's mount waaaay early on, or didn't get the Plagued Proto-Drake methinks.
Also bears mentioning that if you REALLY can't decide what to fish, fishing the fish (needs variation) you need for Fish Feast, or fishing the Dragonfin fish (+ST food) is NEVER a bad plan. Finally if you're levelling fishing from 1 in the hope of getting this mount please, please, please do one/all of the following to help yourself out as much as possible: (actually if you REALLY care visit E's amazing site. I'm giving some good pointers, but his site is really the business)
- If you're an achievement hound, start fishing in Org/IF to try and catch Old Crafty/Ironjaw to start your skilling. If/when you get them move onto rare fish (Azeroth pools) and catching every type of Outland level fish (dunno if it's an achievement but it'll help you on your Cooking achievements)
- If you like money, get some lures and go to the oases in the Barrens or in Wailing Caverns and sell your Deviate Fish on the AH. You can do this pretty much until Northrend if you REALLY like money, your server REALLY likes ninjas and pirates and you have NO boredom threshold
- Forget Mr Pinchy. If you're truly committed to the Turtle mount you should be elbow deep in Borean Man'O'Wars before you reach the skill needed to reliably fish Mixed Highland Schools to the best of my knowledge
- Don't fish other people's pools. In fact, just stay away from other people all together as far as is possible. Fishing is a pretty solitary activity - there is nothing more annoying than seeing/hearing someone else's bobber when you're trying to fish (except not having a bag slot when you catch the turtle mount, which brings me to my final point)
- ALWAYS HAVE A BAG SLOT!!!! If the mount is anything like Mr Pinchy he will GO AWAY if you don't have inventory space while looting him and his dialog box disappears. If this happens to you, my commiserations, as you've probably killed yourself by now.

That's my strategy whenever I start on a new server. Some people suggest teaching your bank alt to mine or herbalize, but I think Deviate Fish are an excellent way to earn your first 100g. Without chasing pools, you'll average about one Deviate per minute, and I usually see the uncooked fish selling for 1-1.5g each (20-30g per stack, 60-90g per hour). One or two hours of Deviate fishing can provide you with enough money to fund your training, gearing, and professions to at least level 60.
The tough part is leveling your fishing mule so they aren't constantly attacked by Kolkars. Gosh, if only there were a way to create a character who started out at a high level, like, I don't know... level 55. Be even better if they came with an fast mount and all the Old World flight points. Yep, that'd sure be sweet.
GormanGhaste Apr 21st 2009 6:14AM
Of course, now that deviate fish drop from the dalaran fishing daily, they won't be worth as much on the AH.
Dightkuz Apr 14th 2009 5:52PM
From what i've read it's 1 in 1000 chance to drop.
This imo doesn't sound THAT rare, but then again, it only drops from schools + all the others who are gonna go fish for it.
So yeah okay, I guess it's THAT rare then.
Balius Apr 14th 2009 6:28PM
1 in 1000 is the chance each time you cast, and doesn't get any more likely as time goes on. It's the same drop chance as for the dragon whelps, only fishing "nodes" don't tend to be conveniently grouped together and each time fishing can take up to 30 seconds, where I can kill eight crimson whelps in a single fan of knives.
It's long odds that you'll get the mount.
Dan Apr 14th 2009 5:53PM
For those of us on PvP servers though, just think of all the honor that can be farmed near bodies of water for the next few weeks!
jaenicoll Apr 14th 2009 6:02PM
I appreciate the humour in your post but there are some people out there will do that.
They will use it to justify their griefing (aka upsetting other peoples plans rather than getting on with their own). However, if honor really was their goal then they would make far more honor in WG or AV per hour. But that would be a fair fight and most griefers are cowards.
syberghost Apr 14th 2009 6:32PM
Balius:
While it's true that each time you cast you have no more chance than any previous time of catching it, it is also true that people who cast a thousand times have a much higher chance of having caught it during one of those casts than people who cast only once.
Please read literally ANY TEXT EVER WRITTEN about statistics that was more than three paragraphs long for an explanation of why.
flawless Apr 14th 2009 7:18PM
Syber, that paints it in a very false-positive light. Yes, you have more chance of having caught it with 1000 casts than 1 cast, but that 1001st cast still has exactly the same chance as the first cast.
Greenman Apr 15th 2009 4:53PM
Start and finish your 1000 fish achievement in the Northrend pools, and you have about a 63% chance that you will have the mount.
broncofan1 Apr 14th 2009 6:02PM
I just want to get the new bobers so I dont have to stare at those friggin feathers anymore!
shalina Apr 15th 2009 11:53AM
amen
Jenny Apr 14th 2009 6:01PM
After I've nabbed dual spec and done the first fishing daily in Dalaran (and then checked Barlo to see if Crocs in the City is up), I'll be grinding for this too. Should be ... fun. >_>;
Anaughtybear Apr 14th 2009 6:04PM
Although the turtle looks cool, nothing can make me fish in WoW. It is the most boring thing you can do... even more boring than grinding endless hours in battle grounds to get some gear handouts. Then consider the elitists douche bags that get them and promptly spend a week standing on the mail box with it showing off. Yeah, I don't want it in the least any more.
Balius Apr 14th 2009 6:31PM
I think something shiny caught your attention there, you got distracted by a new topic.
Jeff Apr 14th 2009 6:05PM
So for someone who hasn't done any fishing yet, would leveling it in Northrend be a smart idea? Smaller chance of getting fish, but how badly should that effect our leveling? Is it worth the chance of getting a turtle (for someone who isnt willing to farm-- just wouldn't mind a chance at an extra bonus for leveling fishing).
Flack Apr 15th 2009 2:55PM
You should fish in Northrend as soon as your skill is high enough, but only after fishing up your Weather-Beaten Journal in Zangarmarsh.
