Maintenance continues to be extended, no time frame given
Today's epic maintenance to apply patch 3.1, which has stretched from 1 AM for some realms and 3 AM for others, has been additionally extended. Originally, the realms were supposed to go live at 11 AM PDT; that time has come and gone, and been pushed back a few times.
The latest update, posted to the Breaking News box a few minutes ago, is that they do not currently have an ETA on when the realms will be up, and they'll give us some more information at about 2 PM PDT, which is in 45 minutes or so.
Update 5:15 p.m. EDT: The realms continue to be down, with the in-game message now telling us that there will be an announcement at 6:00 p.m. EDT letting us all know more information.
Update 6:15 p.m. EDT: Maintenance is continuing on all realms. There is no time frame given as to when the realms will be back up, however there will be an additional announcement at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Stay tuned to WoW Insider for more information. Additionally, the official forums and account management appear to be intermittently down now as well.

DO NOT RUN REPAIR.EXE AFTER UPDATING OR YOU WILL BREAK YOUR INSTALLATION AND HAVE TO REINSTALL!!!
Omestes Apr 14th 2009 5:25PM
Huh? How so?
I did, foolishly following Bliz' own advice since it popped up "cannot verify your version", and the only wonkiness on trying to relog in is that the launcher is now out of date. WoW throws up no extra errors, repair.exe didn't throw up any errors either.
Perhaps you had the PTR installed?
The rest of these problems are due to us idiotic early adopters who rolled our WoW accounts into Battle.net ones.
Clinton Apr 14th 2009 5:30PM
If you run repair.exe it replaces 3.1.0 files with 3.0.9 files its a bug blizz confirmed it. If you have done this you have to delete and reinstall everything.

I was hoping they'd have things back up by 5:30 EST so I can play after work... Still holding out some hope but won't be shocked if they're down significantly longer. Oh well, they gotta do what they gotta do I suppose. I'm sure they are just doing the final things required to keep the Ice Stone from melting repeatedly.

I am taking this downtime to watch a show called Firefly. Someone let me borrow the DVD set. WHY did they cancel this show? It's great!
DOWN WITH GDI!
Tomnationwide Apr 14th 2009 4:38PM
because ur the only person who watched it :|
Agravaine Apr 14th 2009 4:39PM
Make sure you watch Serenity too.
Jhestor Apr 14th 2009 4:42PM
Actually, the firefly DVD set became one of the hottest selling items Fox ever put out.
I'm sure someone got fired over that.
Kar On E Apr 14th 2009 4:44PM
A lot of it had to do with Fox execs believing that the first episode didn't have enough action, so they switched the first and second episodes around. No one fully understood the characters at first, so it just didn't get the viewership. Such a good show though!
BTW, for those of you in Denver, the Continental is having a big screen showing of Serenity on Wednesday.

never plan to play on patchday
I think the funniest patchday bug was when you couldn't run normally but everyone was just jerking forward in small increments. wonder what will go wrong this time around

LOL at anyone who thinks the game will be playable when it comes live....
I mean, think wintergrasp, but with no time limits, and based out of icecrown instead. Think questing on day 1 of WotLK when everyone just hit the starting zone. Think naxx-lag on a tuesday night, but x100000 in ulduar. Ulduar COMES OUT today, it wont be playable for a little bit.
so many people are going to be in icecrown tryin the new dailies and doing argent tournament stuff, servers are going belly up not long after they come live.
this should come as much as a suprise to people as this extended maintenance. Honestly when I looked and it said "11PDT" I laughed, and made jokes like "thats when they'll give us the first 'we currently have no idea' update...."
I know you all remember 3.0 and its maintenance day....
how about the time when blizz fucked up the mail and "extended" maintenance, was extended well into the next day?
Omestes Apr 14th 2009 5:29PM
Which is why I won't be on my main until around 4am server time. (bought a bottle of wine just for a good old fashioned all nighter), but will be dual specing, reglyphing, and playing with my new free respecs. After that, I'll continue doing stupid Baron-mount runs until I feel Icecrown has emptied out, and all the kids bed times have passed.
Northrend is going to be hell. :)
AyaJulia Apr 14th 2009 4:39PM
I'm not annoyed that they extend the maintenance over and over again. Really, I'm not. This is an extensive patch, we all expected this. If you didn't, you haven't been playing long enough.
What I'm annoyed about is the fact that THEY seemed to think that they could finish the update within 10 hours. It never happens for a major patch. Just call it 16 hours to begin with, don't jerk us around about it.
Tidycat Apr 14th 2009 4:48PM
Seriously, they need to just say "Listen were releasing a patch today, dont expect to play tonight."
I shouldnt have to come back every one hour to see if its up just to play a buggy crowded Ulduar
metrocake Apr 14th 2009 5:29PM
This! They knew how big the patch was, they knew how massive this would be, and they know how much the servers are going to get nailed when everyone comes on at once...
Yet every time there's a major content patch they promise a teensy amount of downtime which never, ever , EVER is the case. They need to stop minimizing their downtime and be real about it. There would be less QQ from players, less pressure on themselves, and everyone would be happy.
If Blizz told me there'd be a 12-hour downtime for a major patch, but that it would WORK at the end of that time, that would be damned reasonable to me...

Are any mac users downloading ridiculously slow and being hit with the firewall message? Not behind a firewall, wondering how to make that change.
Tucker Apr 14th 2009 5:10PM
Check and make sure you have your ports forwarded. I got the same error message, forwarded the appropriate ports, and then the light turned green and all was well. The help menu in the downloader should get you started.
Kylenne Apr 14th 2009 5:17PM
Yep. And my ports have been forwarded like, forever.
I finally completed my download a little while ago, no idea wtf was going on though.
Riz Apr 14th 2009 4:40PM
Wait ... 1 AM ... 3 AM ... like TOMMOROW ???
