Common updating problems and tips for fixing them
It's patch day, of course, and people are having plenty of troubles with upgrading their clients to the latest 3.1 version. But worry not -- most of the issues we're seeing, while relatively widespread, should be fixed by the time the realms come back online. Here's a few tips to help you get through the time of trouble.Help! My patch isn't downloading? It's stuck at 68%/73%/xx%!
It probably is downloading -- be patient and let it run. Blizzard uses a Bittorrent-based system to distribute the game's patches through the official client, and those systems depend not just on Blizzard and their ability to distribute the patch, but also how much of the patch all of your peers have. If everyone around you has xx%, that's all you'll get for now. But an hour from now, someone will have spread the full patch around, and then you'll pick it up no problem. Patience is a virtue, and until the realms come back up, you can't play anyway.
Also, the patcher will stop showing progress around 70% or so -- at that point it'll start installing the patch, and you'll need to click another button to see installation progress. But if you just let it run, it'll update.
What does "The tracker is not responding" mean?
Another Bittorrent issue that should resolve itself after a little while. The patch will need some time to disseminate, and if you get a message like this, it just means your client hasn't found all of the connections that it can. It will.
I get a weird "Unable to Validate Game Version" message when I log in. Is my client broken?
No. Blizzard's servers aren't all upgraded yet (hence the reason we can't play). When they are all upgraded, your client's version will match the server's, and everything will be hunky dory.
I downloaded the patch fine, but I get a message saying "The file WoW.exe could not be found." What's up with that?
This could be a more serious problem (you may need to run the Blizzard repair utility, or even reinstall the game), but you won't know for sure until the realms are back up and running. Wait until Blizzard has gotten the servers back up and running, and then try to run the client/install the patch again. If you still have issues, then it's time to run the repair utility (which should be in your game's folder), and see if there are other issues happening -- could be anything from a bad hard drive sector to a corrupted client.
Note: Don't bother running the repair utility until the servers have come back up -- the repair utility likely won't recognize your client right now, either. See the next answer.
I have some other issue, but Blizzard still hasn't gotten the servers back up! Should I be worried?
No. We've almost never seen Blizzard have problems with the patch updater and the release to the live servers. 99% of the problems we're seeing right now will be fixed on their own when the servers return with their updated software, so your best bet right now is to be patient, let the patch make its way out to everyone's client, and let Blizzard do their thing with maintenance. If the servers go back up and you still can't connect or download the patch, then it'll be time to head over to their Technical Support page and start figuring out what might be wrong.

yay for me having a wow.exe missing error. I'm reinstalling to a separate directory as a preemptive strike

"I downloaded the patch fine, but I get a message saying "The file WoW.exe could not be found." What's up with that?"
I've had this problem ever since I installed the PTR client. Neither the PTR client nor the non-PTR client are able to update, and I get this error. Running the repair utility will no doubt fix it, but I'm concerned about what else it might do, so I'm not bothering, my fix instead is (I'm running Vista, I suspect locations are different on XP):
Browse to Public/Public Documents/Blizzard Entertainment/World of Warcraft/Patches/WoW-3.0.9-to-3.1.0-enUS-Win-patch/
Copy all the files to my WoW directory, Public/Games/World of Warcraft/
Re-run "Blizzard Updater.exe" from within the World of Warcraft directory (where you just copied it)
This has worked like a charm for the PTR patches, and worked today as well for 3.1.

Good information, I'm sure many people were getting worried about the version validation error.

Woot, thank you for posting this.. I was starting to do a repair on my installation because of the "Unable to validate game version"!

Thanks wow insider a bunch!!
Although I went ahead and re-installed wow, your information gives me peace of mind lol
Enjoy 3.1 everyone :)

Ditto. Thanks to WI for easing my dread of having to deal with figuring out what was wrong with my WoW instllation all afternoon. Now i can go back to playing Persona 3 til the servers are back up, instead of fretting over a broken WoW.

I just had the "Unable to validate game version" and looked on the Blizz help link, and it said Mac users need to reinstall the game to fix it. I just deleted my game files and went to reinstall, only to find out that Account Management is down and I can't redownload the game. Then I come here and see that it's just a small error on Blizz's end that should be fixed in an hour. FML.

Blue has confirmed that this is a problem on their end. Under normal circumstances, yes, you would have to reinstall. But not on patch day -- wait until the servers are back up and then see if it gives you the same message. If it still has problems, then you can run repair or reinstall.

If the game folder is still in your trash can, you can just restore it back to you applications directory and be good to go.

The authentication servers are different for people who merged their battle.net accounts with WoW, and those servers haven't been patched yet so just chill and don't try reinstalling WoW (yet).

I have the same weird issue every time theres a patch, i cant connect, like it wont even try, just pops up the can not connect message IMMEDIATELY.
Then if i plug my cable modem direct into my computer i can connect and then i can connect after plugging it back into my router after connecting that first time.
A minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.
WRT54gs if anybody knows what the deal is.

check your port setting on your router, I am at work now, and i don't remember exactly where to do this, but you might need to open the port that the WOW downloader uses.

Having dealt with a similar issue in the past, I've found it's normally a configuration thing (NAT and whatnot) between the router and the modem. Here's what I've done:
1: turn off the modem.
2: open up 192.168.1.1 in a web browser (no http or anything, just the numbers), this is the default IP for linksys routers. User name is blank, password is "admin". Set the "internet connection type" to whatever your ISP type is (mine's PPPoE) and enter your login information. Note: DHCP is *not* the correct choice in this method.
3: Make sure that DHCP server *is* enabled under the "Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)"
4: Save your settings.
5: Turn your modem back on. At this point, most modems will notice the change and switch into bridge mode, in which case no further changes are necessary and the connection should work.
If not...
6: Navigate your web browser to your modem (my speedstream modem's IP is 192.168.254.254). Typically, the login information is user: admin password: admin, or some variant thereof (depends on the modem). From there you can manually switch the modem into bridge mode. Save your settings and reboot (reboot, not reset) the modem.
This is what's worked for me. Best of luck with your configuration.

i was repairing until i saw this, i was using someone's advice to delete a file so it would downgrade and i could reinstall the patch, but by the time it would have been all said and done, i'd probably miss about an hour or 2 of game time, and i want to be there the second the patch hits, thanks WoWinsider! =D
Thetealone Apr 14th 2009 1:40PM
Thanks for posting this Mike, I was begining to worry.

I started up the blizzard downloader yesterday and got a 3.1.0 patch (around 700 mb, IIRC). Is this sufficent or do I need to download anything else?
Fizbin Apr 14th 2009 1:44PM
From a guildy...
"If anyone using Vista or 7 gets the wow.exe cannot be found error, I solved this by rightclicking the updater and saying "Run as Administrator""
wodentoad Apr 14th 2009 1:45PM
Macs seem to be having the biggest problems from what I've seen 'round the net. Not enough tubes, I guess. 8hr download time QQ!
Magma Apr 14th 2009 1:54PM
This is why you read the official forums before you go off on a tangent deleting and reinstalling files.
Gessilea Apr 14th 2009 1:47PM
I'm not normally amused by trolls, but watching people on the forums run around like chickens with their heads cut off is vaguely hilarious. It's not like patch days haven't been screwy since, oh, I don't know... release? Calm yer horses!
