Cooking is a little easier, but only a little

I've been holding off on leveling up my cooking until 3.1 in the hopes that the tweaks Blizzard was making would give me an easier go of it, but I probably shouldn't have bothered waiting. While they have given us a few more recipes that stay green later, that's pretty much all we got. Anyone expecting more yellow recipes or even (gasp) orange to get the skill points rolling faster will be sorely disappointed. I cooked some of those Salmon you see above, and got a pretty good rate of about one point for every three cooks (which is normal for green on any profession), but 420-450 is still a slightly uphill battle.
The good news is that you no longer need flint and tinder (though if, like me, you bought a Gnomish Army Knife, you didn't have to worry about that anyway), and you should make sure to stop and talk to the cooking trainer next time you run the daily, as they'll now teach you the Black Jelly recipe. And of course that ugly Chef's Hat is in the game -- I considered it for a moment, but at 100 Dalaran Cooking awards, you're going to be doing at least a few weeks of grinding just to wear that hat. Still, if people will fish up the turtle mount, I guess there's no end to what they'll chase in game.
Update: We're also told the level required for the cooking dailies may have been raised to 80 -- one tipster says one faction can do them and the other can't. May be a bug -- we'll keep an eye out on this one.

Oh well :(
At least getting to 425~ will be easier on my army of alts, right?
madfigs Apr 15th 2009 4:09PM
Well I'm glad I didn't wait... been rocking the chef title for a while now. I don't know if the hat is worth it, although being an achievement whore does make it a little more attractive.

Its good for RP, thats all i can think of...

last night I cooked 12 yellow recipes - one point
a little while later, I made cooked 30 or so green recipes and got one point per cook for the first 12-15 or so then nothing.
My problem isn't that there isn't enough green or yellow recipes, it's the inconsistency throughout all the professions. A yellow recipe should give a point every other time, if not every time.
Greens should be every 2-3, maybe 3-5 for a point.
I made 80, freakin' 80 Gnomish army knives on my engy to get 5 points.
Cooking from 430 to 450 was about as bad

Dont think ive ever coo0ked anything lol i cheaply leved a DK to 80 workin on druid now might level his cooking on the way

Cooking (and fishing) on my main is 450, so I feel your pain. Does any profession have a recipe that stays orange until near the end? I know my Blacksmithing alt is slogging through the 270-300 range right now with repeated trips into the bugholes of Silithus. My neglected alliance BS is sitting in Northrend with skill level of 368 - never did finish the last 8 points.
I think this is their intent - to make skill cap a joyous event.
Lorsty Apr 15th 2009 4:14PM
I believe some of the "high end" epics stay orange for those last 10-15 points.
I know for a fact, the epic goggles my engineer can make are orange at 449 (never bothered to get that last point ;_;).
Rob Apr 15th 2009 4:16PM
For crafting the epic recipes are at least yellow at skill cap. This probably isn't the answer you are looking for though.
I've yet to hit 450 cooking, i dont raid on that toon so no feasts.
RudeMorgue Apr 15th 2009 4:14PM
Why in God's name are Gigantic Feast and Small Feast even in the game, much less required for levelling to 450? What a waste of time.
Radiophonic Apr 15th 2009 4:19PM
Agreed. That food isn't half as fun as good ol' Deviant Delight.
I'm not sure why cooking turned out to be the hardest profession but it sure is frustrating.
Gulbrandt Apr 15th 2009 4:21PM
Probably for the same reason Noggenfogger Elixir, Deviate Delight, and Giant Growth Potion are in the game. (Oh, and the new Pygmy Oil, too). They're just amusing.
Games are supposed to be entertaining, after all.

I think the feasts are awesome. So I'm only at 448 cooking... what is the rush anyway? Fish feast? I'll get there eventually. If leveling cooking, or fishing, or anything else for that matter was easy, then it would mean a little bit less, I feel.
Spazmoosifer Apr 15th 2009 4:43PM
I am personally rather fond of picking up a Giant Feast, the Elixir of Giant Growth, Winterfall Firewater, and grouping up w/ a shaman who can pop heroism, all while mounted on a mammoth.
It makes you freakishly huge, and amazes those lower level newbies in Stormwind :-)
RudeMorgue Apr 15th 2009 5:22PM
Oh, don't get me wrong, these would be great little fun items, but as the *only* way to (reasonably) level to 450? Couldn't they at least stack with an actually useful Well Fed buff?
popeguilty Apr 15th 2009 4:20PM
The Chef's hat, at 100 marks, is three months of grinding.
100 cooking marks = 1000 Northrend Spices, which go for about a gold apiece.
Gee, I'd rather have a stupid hat than a thousand gold!
Lorsty Apr 15th 2009 4:27PM
Well, you'll get 1000g anyway for the gold reward of the daily (a little bit less if you get lucky with the cooking awards).
Barakardemer Apr 15th 2009 5:09PM
I'm an achievement whore and I can't imagine spending that much for the stupid hat. I bet it goes down with the next patch.
popeguilty Apr 15th 2009 4:31PM
Well, I'd rather have 2000 gold then! :D
Asdf Apr 15th 2009 5:54PM
I bought the hat yesterday and I rather like it. I had 130ish Dalaran cooking awards just rotting (I've tried selling northern spices, of which I have hundreds, and nobody buys them, even for less than 1g each), so it's not like I have to actively put forth any effort.
Balius Apr 16th 2009 12:53PM
I've never seen ANYONE buy a Northern Spice on my server, and people who try tend to get laughed at until they leave in a huff. One guy was in Dalaran for 6 hours trying to sell them, and while his price dropped from two gold apeice to 75copper, he had the same amount when I came back to town. The only people who want the spices are cooks, and cooks can get spices for free by themselves.
That's kind of the flaw in saying that they're "worth" money. Someone has to buy.
