WoW Rookie: Patch madness

Welcome, O WoW rookie, to patch week madness. If you thought run-of-the-mill maintenance and minor patch days could be dicey, here's your chance to enjoy the epic-level chaos wrought by epic-level content patches.
World of Warcraft has evolved considerably since its launch in what's now been almost a handful of years ago. Blizzard regularly releases downloadable updates, called "patches," to add new content and features, fix problems and tweak game play and balance. Through patches, players have gained access to new quests, instances, Battlegrounds, events, items and tools.
This week's Patch 3.1 is known as a content patch – a nice way of saying "a ton of new stuff we've added to the game that's going to make all hell break loose." The realms go up, the realms go down. The realms go up. Did we mention they also go down? You may log in only to find your characters nowhere in sight ("Oh #%$&, my characters are all gone!"). You may experience disappearing mail or auctions, random disconnections from the game and insufferable lag. You may find yourself merrily rolling along only to find the NPCs have disappeared, you can't zone in or out of instances or log out of the game, and you and every other player who's trapped in your zone are left with nothing to do but chat about the whole thing. (Almost makes you wonder if the Ice Stone has melted yet.)
Patience, young grasshopper
Your best weapon against the madness is patience. Game instability brings out the worst in many players. Players who've been waiting for weeks and months for access to new features and content may become furious when they find themselves denied. Raiding and PvP schedules go to hell in a handbasket as instances crash, lag out and lock down. Missing items, abilities and talents throw players into a panic.
If you're having a problem, it's probably not you. Technical troubles may not even be consistent. You may ramble around town all afternoon, half-AFK as you finish up at work or home, but find yourself locked out of the game when evening rolls around and you're ready to hit it. Your realm may crash repeatedly while others sail along without a bobble. If you're really curious, ask other players in game if they're having similar troubles, or visit the official forums to look for specific known issues. Otherwise, unless you need to submit an in-game petition for a lost item or other specific problem (be patient – remember, the GMs are stretched thin at times like these), your best choice may be to log out and enjoy a spring stroll.
If all this talk of patch madness sounds negative toward Blizzard – we don't mean it to be, really. We think Blizzard generally does a pretty good job of cleaning up the inevitable confusion. Any growing pains you may encounter will eventually subside. Until then, patience and a sense of humor go a long way.
So what's in all this for me?
Patch 3.1 doesn't contain a lot of new content for new players still leveling their first character, so you're unlikely to run into immediate changes beyond the technical chaos. The biggest changes are the addition of dual talent specs, Ulduar raiding content, the Argent Tournament, major class changes, swimming mounts and new inscriptions. You'll find a good summary in WoW, Casually's "What 3.1 means for casual players". For the whole Patch 3.1 enchilada, visit our complete WoW Insider Guide to Patch 3.1.
Patch 3.1 brings a lot of juicy new content – but that's not to say every player will be thrilled. "The changes to characters can be difficult to cope with at times," wrote Amanda Dean last year in WoW Rookie. "We all select our characters based on their abilities and grow accustomed to what they are capable of. Patches often change spells and abilities, which in turn modifies how they affect game play. Some of the changes are beneficial to some classes while weakening others. These 'buffs' and 'nerfs' are a source of considerable controversy but are implemented as the developers see fit for game balance."
Need help navigating the new waters? WoW Insider walks you through all the changes. See the complete WoW Insider Guide to Patch 3.1 for a class-by-class analysis of changes and additions.

Believe it or not, but sending out new versions of software with major changes to millions of players, and having them log into the same servers at the same time, is going to cause lots of problems no matter what you do.
No matter how many patches they do, or how good they get at them, there's always going to be unexpected bugs, technical glitches, queues, server crashes due to high traffic, and so on.
If you think otherwise, you probably don't understand how this stuff really works.

Sometimes the sheer magnitude of the bugginess drives me through the wall, but overall I've been able to maintain an amused stance when it comes to this patch.. though the instance freezing was interesting tonight.
On top of that, there's an advantage to the servers going up and down- when they come back up, the Higher Learning books in Dalaran have respawned- I now have all but one, which is evading me as a fake spawns there most times.

My feeling was that they released the patch too early and my experiences so far have not changed that feeling. Whilst I've not encountered it myself I've had guildmates reporting that the dual spec system is still behaving weirdly with regard to missing talents and talentpoints. Even with no mods running to screw things up, I personally can't see any of the events in the guild calendar (though annoyingly everybody else I've talked to doesn't seem to have this problem). I did OS last night and the lava walls kept disappearing and reappearing somewhere else. On top of all that it seems the in game GM support was disabled so you couldn't even send the GM a note about any of these issues. I can understand that the GMs will be swamped by messages at this time, but I don't think the correct answer is to disable in game support.

Things went pretty well on Area 52 Classic, dual specs and all, but I have heard that Northrend and of course Dalaran are very laggy since there are so many people in that area. I have been happily tooling around with my 50 something alt in the Azorothian Dead Zones with out a clue. I guess that is one good reason on top of so many bad since Wrath came out. No lag on patch day. (actually night) The only problem I have encountered as of yet is when "attempting" to zone in AV for some PvP. I didn't have any problems during the 1st couple of BG's, little laggy but doable, zoned in and zoned out at exact same location where I started. Until...I tried to zone in once again and got stuck at the load screen for a couple of minutes till I DC'd. It did this three times in a row and when trying to login at the character screen got the boot after a few minutes. I guess BG was at capacity so I decided to take 10 and get some chow until they finished. When I returned, I logged back in and I was at my hearth in Dalaran. I guess Ghetto Hearth is not dead in this case?
Wyred Apr 16th 2009 7:52AM
Yeah, I had this as well. Wouldn't call it ghetto hearth though, since you can't use it reliably. Can't say I've come across any other bug yet, though I've not been raiding yet.

Yes, The patch is buggy, no it's not their first patch, and maybe they did get the patch out a bit early, but thats only because of the pressure the fan base puts on blizzard for new content.
Saying that, I imagine that however long blizzard spent ironing out the kinks making it perfect, the fact remains that something would still go wrong when the patches went live. Murphy's law. surely your all used to that in real life anyway right?
Fletch Apr 16th 2009 6:04AM
Something will indeed always go wrong with a patch. I fully expect and accept this, but the amount of bugs seems overly high to me, especially with regard to issues that were already flagged on the PTR. I would maintain such a large content patch needed more testing before release.
Alanid Apr 16th 2009 7:59AM
I suppose that they are concentrating so much on making the new stuff work well, that anything else gets overlooked, as in some new code might interfere with the old stuff, but they don't notice until it goes live, sure they have the PTR for checking stuff like that, but the PTR cannot compare to the amount of players that all log in at the same time on patch day, there are bound to be things wrong - like pallies being able to have 2 auras up at the same time

We had WG reset on us twice when we were on the verge of winning - we essentially had to win the damn thing 3 times. Also ended up wiping on a Heroic we were 90% of the way through - very frustrating......
bszota Apr 16th 2009 7:23AM
had a VERY strange experience last night while playing on Outland EU...
mid-way through fighting Archavon... everyone stops moving. I thought 'oh damn lag'... but everyone could still talk with absolutely no delay.... so we were chatting away in /raid, the majority stuck mid run / mid cast
so after 15 minutes of limbo i log out and in on my alt.... and receive a confused guild message: "uhhhh Bruno..... how are you on two toons at once?"
lo and behold my other toon, trapped in archavon, is still logged in. i even whispered myself....
for giggles i logged in on my other alts (5 in total), until ALL of my toons were logged in (all variations of Bruno in name).
unfortunately once logged out i couldnt log back in on any of the toons because "a character of that name already exists"

I'm not sure if this has been reported or not, but 3.1 screwed up the stats display on the Logitech G15 LCD panel. Parts of the text was missing which made them hard to make out.
However this was yesterday and as I have yet to log in today I can not confirm if this problem still exists or have been patched.
Other than that I'm sure everyone discovered that others' links in the trade channel could no longer be clicked. Not to mention the fact that neither Quest Helper, Cartographer nor Recount seemed to work with the new updated World of Warcraft. At least I'm glad I didn't have to log in to discover my talent points were gone like many people on my realm (Sporeggar EU) reported.
Problems aside, there's quite alot of neat things in 3.1 that makes it all worth it. (I bet something terrible will happen now just because I said that.)
Alanid Apr 16th 2009 7:54AM
Yeah i logged in and noticed a pally in trade chat saying "Are pallies meant to have 2 auras?" i immediatly tried my auras, and he was right, i could have 2 auras on at the same time, ofc this has to be a bug, but it was interesting having dev and crusader auras on at the same time. Unfortunatly whilst flying to the argent tournament i accidently dismounted and fel to my death, then i could only have 1 aura again... was fun while it lasted

Interesting comments on the Worth of WoW. The 50 cents a day logic, though, is obviously flawed. The question isn't, "Can I afford to spend 50 cents a day on a product?" but, "How many products/services can I afford to buy at 50 cents (more or less) a day?" Every so often, WoW's the one not worth it, which is much harder to realize when you're literally addicted.
Gothia Apr 16th 2009 8:39AM
Everybody has obsessions in the course of a lifetime be it women, wine, drugs, sports, cars, movies etc. WoW is not an addiction and I would rather bang my head against a wall than try to explain such to people that walk through life with their eyes, ears and mouth covered.
The problem with WoW, personally, is not value of the service, which is extraordinary, but how many bones can Blizzard throw until you say; "Hey, this is the same old bone."
Patrick the Loladin Apr 16th 2009 8:32AM
Not to be negative, but my gnome freaking lost half og her head :), really funny seeing NPC's running around missing og their head... Besides the AddOns no probs for me...
Thanks Blizz, nice updates!

What does patch day really mean? Well, yes..the obvious server instability, a long, long wait for those who don't use the background downloader, minor hassles, minor headaches, the feeling of riding a roller coaster with the server crashes...the list goes on. All of which is to be expected with a major content patch...remember, they are adding a TON of new stuff, and trying to incorporate it in to a world that already contains a TON of stuff. Doing it with no extended down time, or issues is not possible.
What I did on patch day:
1) Checked the forums occasionally for downtime updates.
2) Cleaned the house.
3) Cooked a nice meal.
4) Mowed the yard.
5) Enjoyed a cold cold beer out on the deck.
6) Spent time with non-Azerothian friends.
People complain about losing a day of downtime, they troll the forums for the opportunity to scream "BLIZZ YOU PHAIL!" (yes, I actually saw that), they cry, they moan, they demand refunds or free time, what don't they do? They don't even make the effort to actually do something real and constructive with their lives. Good hell, people, get outside and realize that the sun feels good on your face. Spend some time with friends outside of WoW (if you have any), and enjoy their company. Kiss and hug your wife/husband, and use it as a time to do something family oriented.
Honestly, 50 cents per day means little to anything...remember, you can feed a starving child in Africa for less than that!

anyone who's played WoW for any substantial amount of time should be used to patch day madness, personally i love seeing all the bugs, i have played WoW since patch 1.2, and i have always loved all the bugs around unless they involve constant d/c'ing, which hasn't really happened to me, i may get d/c'd a couple of times but no more than that really.

"in what's now been almost a handful of years ago. "
Huh? What is "four" too hard to say?
