Scattered Shots: The Hunters of lore

Scattered Shots is your weekly guide to improving your Hunter skills, brought to you by Jessica "Lassirra" Klein of The Hunter's Mark, covering a wide variety of Huntery topics. Today, we'll be looking at some prominent historic figures in Hunter lore.
For Hunters looking to get into role playing, a good place to start is to look at the Hunters that came before you to get a feel for common themes upon which you can base your character concept. There are many prominent Hunters in Blizzard lore that spans multiple Warcraft titles, both for the Horde and the Alliance, which you can look to for inspiration. Today, I'd like to spend some time getting to know some of the great Hunters of Azeroth.
Rexxar
A half-ogre, half-orc member of the Mok'Nathal clan, Rexxar is fierce in combat with the aid of his loyal bear, Misha. Before the release of The Burning Crusade, Rexxar could be found wandering from the Charred Vale in the Stonetalon Mountains, through Desolace, and on to the Twin Colossals in Ferals. These days he calls Thunderlord Stronghold in the Blade's Edge Mountains home, protecting the settlement from outside threats. To truly get a feel for Rexxar's personality, there is one quote in particular that I think illustrates what's really in his heart:
"I have watched the other races... seen their squabbling, their ruthlessness. Their wars do nothing but scar the land, and drive the wild things into extinction."
Rexxar is no stranger to combat. His restless nature is what initially drove him from his peaceful clan to join in the fighting during the Second War alongside Grom Hellscream and the Warsong clan. However, Rexxar is not ignorant of the effects of war on the world around him and the damage the constant fighting does to the lands and creatures he loves.
Shandris Feathermoon
Shandris' story, like that of many of the night elves' most prominent figures, stretches far back into Azeroth's history. A loyal friend and supporter of Tyrande Whisperwind, the High Priestess of Elune and leader of the night elf government, Shandris is the General of the Sentinel Army and calls Feathermoon Stronghold in Feralas home. One of the few survivors of a Burning Legion attack on her home village of Ara-Hinam during the War of the Ancients, Shandris was introduced to combat at an early age. Following Tyrande, she watched in secret (Tyrande forbid Shandris from participating) as the Sisters of Elune engaged in battle to defend their homelands against the advances of the Legion.
Not content to remain inactive as those she cared about fought, Shandris grabbed her bow and joined the fray along side the Sisters under the command of Jarod Shadowsong, putting her lethal bow to efficient use. During the Sundering, Shandris retreated alongside her comrades to Mount Hyjal where she remained until the Orc Horde attacked the forest. Following Grom's slaughter of the demigod Cenarius, Shandris accompanied her Sentinels, the Shadowleaves, deep into Ashenvale to warn Tyrande of their approach.
Both in word and deed, Shandris has proved time and again that she is both loyal friend and fierce warrior, putting her bow to devastating use to protect her both her homeland and those she cares about.
Sylvanas Windrunner
For players of the Horde in particular, the figure of the former Ranger-General of Silvermoon is a familiar one; the Banshee Queen of the Forsaken can be found deep in the Undercity. Sylvanas' story is one of tragedy and betrayal. Her current status as the founder of the Dark Rangers was forced upon her after her death and subsequent resurrection at the hands of none other than Arthas Menethil, who hoped to bend her to the will of the Lich King and use her as a tool to conquer the lands of the high elves. Upon discovering that she could no longer exercise her will over the natural world, Sylvanas warped her woodland knowledge to suit the dark powers that were becoming increasingly natural to her.
Her cunning and ferocity in battle are matched only by her hatred of her betrayer, Arthas. Sylvanas now embraces her current state, harnessing it to suit her goal of restoring her people's lost glory and freedom.
Nathanos Marris
Nathanos had the interesting distinction of having been the only Human Hunter, until the Scourge abomination, Ramstein the Gorger, killed him during an attack. Trained by Sylvanas and the high elves to be a master in battle, Nathanos Blightcaller's loyalty stretched beyond the grave and he now fights as an undead dark ranger in service of the Banshee Queen. In life, Nathanos served the Alliance loyally with numerous victories over the course of a decade until his life was cut short as he attempted to defend his home from the Scourge. Currently residing in Marris Stead in the Eastern Plaguelands along side his two Blighthound pets, Nathanos now bears the title: Champion of the Forsaken.
These are just a small sampling of the Hunters of Azerothian lore. If you're looking for further inspiration, Vereesa and Alleria Windrunner (the sisters of Sylvanas) are also interesting characters, and let's not forget the most famous Hunter of all: Hemet Nesingwary himself. (Just don't tell D.E.H.T.A.!)
A special thank you to Tharion Greyseer of LoreCrafted for pointing me in the right direction to find information on all of these great characters in the Warcraft Universe!

Being a mage I don't usually read the hunter articles, but when I saw the picture of both Rexxar and Sylvanas I had to click to read more. It's pretty cool to see an RP/ article written by someone who normally looks at gameplay aspects of the game! We should encourage other class columnists to do the same - it would be a very interesting series!
Kierachel Apr 16th 2009 10:18PM
I was thinking the opposite to be honest. Leave the lore and the RP to the boring bloggers that no one ever reads....as someone else said, why are you writing about lore on a week that was so eventful for hunters?
Catiya of Feathermoon Apr 16th 2009 11:36PM
I agree! I'd really like to see a series concerning famous members of every class. :]

Wow Keirachel...
FAIL much?
Guess your new to WoW Insider, since this site as I am sure others would cover the many ranges of WarCraft from the Lore- PvP aspects...
Thank God i am at work, so technically i am getting paid to respond to Tools that type, just for the sake of typing.
Do you have to agree with any post you comment? Of course not, but your blatantly trolling...

Well done, totally noobed that.
Rexxar - Beastmaster, NOT a Hunter.
Sylvanas Windrunner - High Elf Ranger/Ranger-General/Banshee/Dark Ranger, NOT ever a hunter.
Nathanos - the only ever Human Ranger, NOT a Hunter.
Get your lore right.
Draykin Apr 16th 2009 8:49PM
Well someone is pissy, aren't they?
Rexxar - Beastmaster which is one of the Hunter trees, the main difference is he doesn't use ranged weaponry and instead has multiple pets.
Sylvanas Windrunner & Nathanos - The closest class players can be to a Ranger is a Marksman Hunter. They can be very similar. Relying on nothing but nature, years of practice with a bow or gun, Nathanos even has some pets.
Alanid Apr 16th 2009 9:08PM
got to agree on the nathanos bit, he was the only human ranger, in lore there are plenty of human hunters, so to speak.
Brunixx Apr 16th 2009 10:47PM
Those are all more specialized types of Hunters. Not only that, a lot of people roleplay their hunters as mountaineers, rangers, beastmasters, etc. They do that with all classes, for that matter. Just because they named the class Hunter, doesn't mean they are only that if they are specifically Hunters. Seriously, it's not a hard concept to grasp. Trust me, a hunter can mean A LOT of things.
Think a little before you type shit to other people.
"Well done, totally noobed that." Quoted for the irony.
Del Apr 16th 2009 11:19PM
actually if you watch Sylvanas shes a melee hunter. We see that she's a melee hunter in both the event at the Battle for Undercity at the end of the questline found in dragonblight (horde) and the video Blizzard put out when you turn in her necklace. look these up. i believe the necklace one im referring to was featured on WoWInsider a little bit ago and theres probably a site that has video of the event.
Oldmean Apr 17th 2009 12:15AM
Man, any hunter can play with this. "Why so serious?!"
A hunter never will never point with a broken nail, like Rexxaranas Nathablah does. So?
" Beastmaster, NOT a Hunter"
...
gimme a break
epicboyz Apr 17th 2009 1:40AM
dude... as a class goes, ranger = hunter.
and Rexxar is as "hunter" as they get. get YOUR lore right.
rosencratz Apr 17th 2009 6:11AM
Yeah i think the article meant to say that nathanos is the only noted hunter in lore, not the only human hunter. There are always plenty in hemet's crew.
@Del - I see what you mean about sylvanas being a melee fighter but i think that's more a game mechanic than real intention. For example as a caster i'm forever finding other NPC casters that feel the need to hit me with their staff or knives... doesn't mean they're melee fighters though, just that Blizz has to make nearly all mobs inclined to fight in mellee.
Tomah Apr 17th 2009 7:28AM
Nathanos was the only human Ranger Lord.
Ranger Lord. Not just a ranger, not just a human hunter. It's the difference between being a paladin and being the Ashbringer.
There's a lot of ceremony and reputation involved, but it mostly comes down to you exceeding the capabilities of normal members of your class and, in the case of a Ranger Lord, being recognized by the elven rangers.
Pexxle -=SilverHand (RP)=- Apr 17th 2009 10:18AM
IMHO i think your being technical with the terminology.
What differentiates a Hunter from a Ranger/ Dark Ranger? Would have been nice if you posted some type of D&D definitions to back up your disagreement.
Last i checked, Hunters, Rangers, Pathfinders, are under the same umbrella...
As for Sylvannas the Dark part can be added after her death...Before that she was a normal living Elven Hunter/Ranger.
If you are reading WoW novels or comics/ or the RTS games completely different from, The World Of Warcraft Lore, which from reading the Official WoW sites story, is a hodgpodge of mess at times... Makes no sense time wise etc...
Grakaron Apr 16th 2009 8:51PM
Seems someone forgot about Veeresa and Alleria. Even Sylvanas bowed to her sisters abilities.
Grakaron Apr 16th 2009 8:52PM
Sorry should qualify that, I specifically mean Alleria, Veeresa is good, but not as good as her two older sisters.
Psyjin Apr 16th 2009 8:54PM
Seems you didn't read the full article, they are both mentioned.
(Although neither are hunters)
jason Apr 16th 2009 8:59PM
3.1 live! All these hunter changes, and we decide to discuss lore???????
Bubsa Apr 16th 2009 10:14PM
Bastardised lore, at that!
rosencratz Apr 17th 2009 6:34AM
Totally!
Such a shame they passed that law that declared that once a column does an article involving Lore it can never ever go into class mechanics again... We should totally revolt over this!
