Rexxar - Beastmaster which is one of the Hunter trees, the main difference is he doesn't use ranged weaponry and instead has multiple pets.
Sylvanas Windrunner & Nathanos - The closest class players can be to a Ranger is a Marksman Hunter. They can be very similar. Relying on nothing but nature, years of practice with a bow or gun, Nathanos even has some pets.

Those are all more specialized types of Hunters. Not only that, a lot of people roleplay their hunters as mountaineers, rangers, beastmasters, etc. They do that with all classes, for that matter. Just because they named the class Hunter, doesn't mean they are only that if they are specifically Hunters. Seriously, it's not a hard concept to grasp. Trust me, a hunter can mean A LOT of things.

actually if you watch Sylvanas shes a melee hunter. We see that she's a melee hunter in both the event at the Battle for Undercity at the end of the questline found in dragonblight (horde) and the video Blizzard put out when you turn in her necklace. look these up. i believe the necklace one im referring to was featured on WoWInsider a little bit ago and theres probably a site that has video of the event.

Yeah i think the article meant to say that nathanos is the only noted hunter in lore, not the only human hunter. There are always plenty in hemet's crew.

@Del - I see what you mean about sylvanas being a melee fighter but i think that's more a game mechanic than real intention. For example as a caster i'm forever finding other NPC casters that feel the need to hit me with their staff or knives... doesn't mean they're melee fighters though, just that Blizz has to make nearly all mobs inclined to fight in mellee.

Ranger Lord. Not just a ranger, not just a human hunter. It's the difference between being a paladin and being the Ashbringer.

There's a lot of ceremony and reputation involved, but it mostly comes down to you exceeding the capabilities of normal members of your class and, in the case of a Ranger Lord, being recognized by the elven rangers.

IMHO i think your being technical with the terminology.

What differentiates a Hunter from a Ranger/ Dark Ranger? Would have been nice if you posted some type of D&D definitions to back up your disagreement.

Last i checked, Hunters, Rangers, Pathfinders, are under the same umbrella...

As for Sylvannas the Dark part can be added after her death...Before that she was a normal living Elven Hunter/Ranger.

If you are reading WoW novels or comics/ or the RTS games completely different from, The World Of Warcraft Lore, which from reading the Official WoW sites story, is a hodgpodge of mess at times... Makes no sense time wise etc...
