WoW Moviewatch: Breaking
X Cross says that he created Breaking as a way to overcome his fear of Blood Elves. It's his first music video, which makes this solid, satisfying movie an impressive feat. ("Music" is the operative word there, since X Cross has obviously done other work.) I'm not sure I understand what he means by fear of blood elves. Maybe that's why his first video, Kippo's X-Mas, didn't feature that waifish mainstay of modern machinima. (I think gnomes would have been a wiser choice anyway, even if the model selection was based on some secret belfophobia.)
Like I said, the video for "Breaking" is solid and satisfying. I'm not sure it vastly redefines anything about the way WoW rock videos work, but it definitely exemplifies the genre. The hardcore band members writhe appropriately on stage, and there's enough elements of "metal" to make me want to throw the horns. I like the lighting, the blur effects, and the prominent machismo of the characters.
The backdrop "action" of the video features of blood elf woman seducing and killing several different men. She shape-changes from "fleshy belf" to "undead belf" several times. I think X Cross was wise to avoid completely explaining that action inside the video, as it lets the audience play with its meaning against the song's lyrics.
Overall, this is a pretty good piece. I look forward to the next X Cross video.

Yaay, didn't expect this video to get in to the moviewatch. Indeeds gnomes would have been a better choice in every situation but people are just belf addicts these days so I tought that if I want people to take this video seriously and if I wanna get some views I must do what I hate must of all... Adding belfs to it >.
Lemons Apr 16th 2009 12:14PM
I am officially boycotting anything with belfs until I see a Machinima posted here that doesn't contain them...
I'd probably make an exception for a new Nyhm vid tho...
That is all.
Keyra Apr 16th 2009 11:13PM
Now WAIT a minute...what about one that contains Belfs, but also contains other races?
You Belf-a-phobe!!! Shame, shame! :-)

I must agree, a well done video! here's to you x-cross, hope to see more movies in the future
McRaider Apr 16th 2009 12:28PM
Not bad, actually. This one was a lot better than other machinima music vids on average...
Heretical Apr 16th 2009 12:33PM
I actually like this video. Even though I detest B'elfs. Too bad the writer says its solid but not great... and all those Gigi videos... if I see one more on this site. I will never look at it again.

Yeah, I rarely watch the movies but this one looked interesting. Well-done, man.
Nice use of the HL2 sets, and recasting the Band pieces so they're not just the standard L80ETC guys!

Me and X-Cross agree about the problem with blood elves in machinima, he posted this on myndflame shortly after my review* of In For A Penny Review see. The problem with Blood elves in machinima isn't just that they have some great animation, but that they and their city has a great story, and many machinimarists have wanted to convay some level of that story and it's theams and have failed.
But! X-cross has really out done him self here, it's a truly effective, poetic, original and abstract portayal of love and lust, beauty and uglyness. Something that is prominant in Blood elf culture.

I'm always amazed by pretty much any machinima. What programs are used to make the awesome effects?
Lemons Apr 17th 2009 3:49AM
If you're every curious about how Machinmators...? Machinimists? Anywho...the people that make this stuff usually have tutorials about how to...make this stuff...
One of my favorite Machinma makers (look up WasteofAces on Youtube) says she uses these programs:
Fraps, WowModelViewer, Digidesign ProTools, Wondertouch Particle Illusion, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere

fear of Bloodelves? You have got to be kidding me...
X-Cross Apr 16th 2009 1:09PM
They stand in a scary pose. Say scary things. Got scary ears. Got wannabe DB hairstyles and they are acting scary too... And everyone loves them for some reason >.
Khremloc Apr 16th 2009 1:14PM
Well, I guess a fear of Blood Elves is common these days. They appear in pretty much every machinima reviewed by WoWinsider, and they are very likely to claw your eyes out. That goes for the female blood elves, too.
GEK Apr 16th 2009 1:42PM
I don't love them but i think fear or them is like the fear of peanut butter or frogs.. Silly
I also wish they would make a MALE bloodelf already
Artificial Apr 16th 2009 2:19PM
Fear blood elves, yes. I'm guessing from your comments that you're just not old enough to understand why you would fear something if it can't kick your ass, but the fact of the matter is, you have much more to fear from the things that can't. Nothing can destroy you more completely than something apparently fragile but achingly beautiful.
I'm also reminded of the old quote from Abe Lincoln, "A woman is the only thing I am afraid of that I know will not hurt me." But of course, it's physical hurt he's talking about. Some pain is much deeper...
X-Cross Apr 16th 2009 9:59PM
Okay, by fear I mean dislike kinda but ofc i'm afriad of them. I mean by look of thier scary poses o.O srsly blizz can't keep on mixing up the male and the famle poses. It just dosn't look right :| . But ofc I have nothing against people playing as them or what ever. I just dislike the way they look, talk and act. I mean would you really like to meet a belf all alone in a dark alley in the middle of a night? Don't think so :P. And I don't know about old enough, atleast i'm 16 but I don't really know what you compare to.
Khremloc Apr 16th 2009 1:04PM
I don't see anything wrong in having a fear of Blood Elves, seeing as pretty much every machinima reviewed by WoWInsider has them and blood elves are likely to claw your eyes out. That goes for the female ones, too.

It’s a well done video. I’m just getting sick of all the music videos out there; especially the Britney spears ones. I’d really like to see some videos where people come up with an original idea or storyline rather than visually interpreting a song or spoofing it with forced lyrics.
