It's a identity protector, it's a towel, the thing just sells itself!
Keyra Apr 17th 2009 8:44PM
It's a floor wax!
It's a dessert topping!

The Authenticator can hold 20 times its own weight in water!
It's made by Germans, you know the Germans always make good stuff.
Hoggersbud Apr 18th 2009 12:05AM
Sadly, no Germans were involved in the making of this authenticator. It was made by the Chinese. Which means they'll use it to take over the entire US Power System.

you're gonna love my nuts!

YES, I finally got one! Thank you for posting this!

I sure hope the last place people would consider buying a high-security device would be eBay. ...well perhaps before a guy with a trenchcoat in an alleyway. :S
It will probably work out for you though. People have proven time and time again they aren't very smart about that kind of thing. :)

@ BioHazard
It is very difficult to break into authenticators, even when you have physical possession of the device (thought that does make it eaisier). However, if you have the skills to be able to do that, it is compeltly uneconomical for you to sit there and do it rather than work a real job, which will net you VASTLY greater sums of money.

Just so you guys know you can only use the Ipone app with a Battle.net account.
Thander Apr 18th 2009 12:21PM
No, I'm using a regular old authenticator with my battle.net account. You think they would put these in the store if they didn't work? I do believe they will eventually go to only mobile authenticators but for now they are still providing both.
Jack Apr 20th 2009 12:28AM
I know the old authenticator works for the battle.net account im talking about the iphone app. If you use the app it only works for a battle.net account.

I still don't get the point of this. Can someone please explain why you need one of these?
Agony Apr 17th 2009 11:37PM
This adds an extra level of security against people who might hack your account. With your account linked to an authenticator, when you enter your user name and password, you are then asked to input the code on your authenticator before you can play. Also, if you're checking/updating your account status on the worldofwarcraft.com site, it will ask you for this as well.
Basically, it's just an additional means of protecting yourself from the more unscrupulous a**holes out in our world today.

Do people not use passwords? How are people's accounts being hacked? Why do people need to protect their WoW accounts more than their bank account?
I guess I understand what this device does, I just don't understand the need for it.
tlarkin79 Apr 18th 2009 9:52AM
Even with a password, accounts get compromised all the time thanks to phishing scams and keyloggers. By using this device creates a dynamically changing pin that only lasts for a short time before it expires and a new one is displayed on the device. This way, if someone ever steals your account info, they still will not be able to login to your account without having this physcial security device.
Panaçea Apr 19th 2009 3:09PM
The reason WoW needs more security than your bank account is because your bank account is not susceptible to viruses that attempt to identify when you are logging in and stealing your information.
It is much easier for WoW to be hacked since everyone runs the same file in order to log into WoW, the virus just looks for that file to be ran and then starts monitoring keystrokes.
Keyloggers(the name of the "virus" for reading WoW passwords) are becoming more prevalent as accounts become worth more work. People who use keyloggers are usually gold famers who steal all the gold from your account(after selling all gear).

Got mine! Thanks for the heads up guys, wouldn't have known otherwise. Keep up the good work :)
Cyno01 Apr 18th 2009 12:31AM
Yay, finally. I've had the authenticator page as my home page since i got hacked a couple weeks ago, but its been an error for the past couple of days. Managed to snag one this time. :D

Fettucine, linguine, martini, bikini!
We can't do this all day, folks!
I like my authenticator but I seriously wish that the display was backlit. Dull black numerals on dark grey background = me squinting and tilting it 5 different ways to read it.
Evi Apr 18th 2009 12:08PM
Same here. I keep my office fairly dim, and I have a real hard time reading that authenticator sometimes!
